What the Swamp Keeps
I.
The afternoon the red fever came, Jack Garland was fishing in the cypress swamp behind his father's farm, and when he got back, the farm was still warm.
Not warm like a warm day. Warm like a body that has just stopped breathing—the walls still holding heat, the stove still humming with whatever soup had been on it when the red fever took his father, the chair at the kitchen table still bearing the impression of a man who had sat down to eat and would never sit down again.
Jack stood in the doorway and listened. The house was quiet but not empty-quiet. It was the quiet of something interrupted, like a sentence left unfinished, like a song that stops on the wrong note and hangs there in the air, unresolved.

"Stop talking for a second," Laurel said. She had been sitting on an upturned bucket, listening, and now she stood up and walked over to Montgomery's mud map and added something to it with her toe: a line connecting the logging camp to the river, and at the end of the line, she wrote a single word that none of them could read because it was written in a hand too neat and too practiced for a child's.
"What's that?" Jack asked.
"Direction," Laurel said. "The river goes south to the gulf and north to New Orleans. If we follow it north, we'll find more kids. If we follow it south, we'll find the water and the boats and maybe people who can help us."
"We should stay here," Montgomery said. "Build a fortress."
"We should go north," Jack said.
Laurel looked at both of them and smiled, and the smile was both thirteen years old and ancient, like a joke that everyone understands but nobody tells. "You're both right," she said. "We'll do both. But first we need to eat."
She knew where the food was. She always knew where the food was. She led them to a patch of wild yams hidden behind a wall of Spanish moss, and she showed them how to dig without hurting the tubers, how to tell which plants were safe and which would make you sick or kill you, how to purify swamp water by boiling it with a leaf that grew only on the north side of cypress trees.
They ate that night around a fire that Laurel had built in a circle of river stones, and Jack looked at the three of them—Montgomery with his stick and his mud map, Laurel with her World Champion shirt and her knowledge of the swamp, and himself, who had nothing to contribute except the fact that he was here and he was still breathing—and he thought that maybe, just maybe, this was enough.

Eleanor Crosby was nineteen when the fever came and nineteen when she got on the boat. She was the only one in her family who survived—her parents, her two older brothers, her grandmother, her great-uncle, all gone in the silence. She was left with the steamboat, the gold, and a conviction that she was supposed to do something with all of it, though she could not yet say what.
She brought news: the entire Mississippi Valley was empty of adults. Every city, every town, every farm from Minnesota to the gulf—gone. The river was full of abandoned boats, and the fields were full of unharvested crops, and the cities were full of televisions playing to empty rooms.

Jack came with eight boys from his farm, armed with rifles and fishing nets and a stubbornness that had been bred into his family for five generations. Montgomery came with six boys and a plan. The battle was brief and absurd and terrifying. They fired rifles into the air. They threw mud. After the storm, they divided the land. Not equally—unequally, but fairly, with Montgomery drawing the lines in the mud and Pearl arguing every inch of it and Beau eventually giving up and saying "whatever" in a voice that was either maturity or surrender, and nobody could tell which.
That night, after the war and the storm and the dividing, they sat around a fire that Laurel had built and watched Orion rise above the cypress canopy. Laurel pointed it out to them—the three stars of the belt, bright and steady in the post-storm sky.
"Mama used to say," Laurel said, her voice barely audible over the sound of the swamp breathing around them, "that up on those stars, there's swamps too. Just like this one. Water and trees and dark and things that live in the dark and nobody knows about."
Jack looked up at Orion and thought about his father and the soup and the red fever and the gold and the war and the way the firelight made everyone's face look like a painting he had seen once in a museum in New Orleans, back when museums still had adults to show you around.
He did not know if the stars really had swamps. He did not know if his father was alive or dead or somewhere in between, breathing but not there, a body in a rocking chair on a porch that was now cold. He did not know if the war had been worth two acres of mud.
But he was here, and the fire was warm, and the swamp was breathing around them, and for tonight, that was enough.
