The humidity at Thornfield had weight. June Calloway felt it the moment she stepped off the bus from Jackson — a warm hand pressing against her chest, not hard enough to push her down but firm enough to remind her that this place would decide how she moved.
The plantation stretched out behind Bramwell Thibodeaux like a promise the land had made to itself and couldn't remember how to keep. Cotton fields, once green and gold, now faded to a color that sat somewhere between yellow and forgetting. The main house stood at the edge of the fields, white columns holding up a porch that had been painted three times over ten years, each layer of paint a different shade of white, a different attempt at making something old look newer.
"This is it," Bramwell said. He stood between June and the house with the posture of a man presenting something he hadn't wanted to receive. June's mother, standing behind him with her suitcase and her face arranged into a smile that didn't reach her eyes, nodded once and said nothing. She had learned, over sixteen years of raising a daughter who asked too many questions and noticed too much, that silence was sometimes the most honest thing you could offer.
Lysandra Thibodeaux appeared on the porch steps without making any sound. She was sixteen, slim in a way that suggested her body was still deciding what to be, and she looked at June the way a cat looks at something that might be interesting if it turned out to be useful.
"You're the new one," Lysandra said. Her voice carried the particular cadence of the South — not the polished accent of the old families but the rougher music of people who had learned to speak through cotton dust and heat. "Try not to get yourself killed."
"I'll do my best," June said, and she meant it the way someone means I'll try not to drown.
The first week at Thornfield was an exercise in learning the rules of a house that had never written them down. June learned quickly. The floorboard in the hall creaked on the third step from the top, so she stepped over it. Cora Lee, Bramwell's cousin and the woman who actually ran the household, ate dinner at seven but never after seven, which meant you brought your plate to your room if you were going to eat later. The black workers on the plantation — six of them, always six, though June sometimes counted seven and then lost track of where the extra person had gone — received their wages in an envelope handed over by Bramwell on the first of the month, and none of them looked at him directly when they took it.
June started at Natchez High, a single brick building surrounded by a football field that mattered more to the town than the church or the courthouse combined. The kids there were products of generations that had built their identities on the difference between people who belonged and people who didn't, and June belonged nowhere in a way that was both liberating and isolating.
She met people. Billy Ray, whose father owned a gas station and who talked about leaving Mississippi like it was a religious calling. Denise, who had been accepted to Southern University in Baton Rouge and was planning her escape with the methodical precision of a military operation. And Lysandra, who appeared at June's locker on a Thursday and said, "You notice things. That's dangerous here. You should be careful about what you notice."
"I'm good at noticing," June said.
"That's the problem," Lysandra said. "Not the not noticing. The good at."
The patterns at Thornfield revealed themselves slowly, like a photograph developing in liquid. June noticed that Bramwell's ledgers were maintained with meticulous care in some areas and sloppily in others — the income side perfect, the expense side full of categories with names like "miscellaneous" and "operational losses." She noticed that the women who came to Thornfield — each one younger than the last, each one with family connections that meant something to a man like Bramwell — stayed an average of two years before something happened that required them to leave.
She noticed that Cora Lee had a locked drawer in her desk, and that the key lived in Cora Lee's jewelry box, next to a ring that had belonged to her mother and that Cora Lee never took off.
She noticed that Lysandra talked to the cotton fields. Not metaphorically. Literally. June saw her standing at the edge of the rows at dusk, hands in her pockets, looking at the cotton the way other girls looked at mirrors — with a mixture of affection and recognition.
The revelation came on a Sunday evening, in the way revelations come at Thornfield — not with dramatic announcement but with the casual brutality of someone who has decided that honesty is cheaper than defense.
Lysandra found June on the back porch, where they sat sometimes in the dark and watched the cotton fields turn silver in the fading light.
"My father marries women with money," Lysandra said, not looking at June, looking at the fields. "He waits for them to settle in. A year, usually. Then he starts directing their money through bad investments. Real estate deals that go south. Stock options that look good on paper. It's not illegal. It's just aggressive. My mother's family had money — Thibodeaux money, old Thibodeaux money that came with land and a reputation for not asking permission. It took two years."
"Why don't you stop him?"
Lysandra turned to look at her then, and in her eyes June saw something that was not quite hatred and not quite admiration, something that lived in the space between those emotions like a plant growing in a crack in the sidewalk. "Because he's good at it," Lysandra said. "And I respect competence. Even when it's directed at me."
"Would it be directed at me?" June asked.
Lysandra was quiet for a long time. The cicadas were loud — a sound so constant it had become part of the silence rather than a interruption of it.
"My father has his eye on a widow from Jackson," Lysandra said. "Evelyn Marsh. Her husband died six months ago, left her with property and a small fortune and a daughter who goes to your school."
June felt something shift in her stomach. "Megan Marsh."
"The one," Lysandra said. "He's been seeing her at church. Sweeping her out to dinner. The whole performance. If he marries her, the money comes here, and it goes through the same channels, and by the time anyone notices, it's already gone. Evelyn is smart, but she's grieving, and grief makes you vulnerable to men who know how to listen."
June stood up. The porch boards were warm under her bare feet. "How long does he have?"
"Four months, maybe less. He's serious about her. Serious men are the most dangerous kind, because they believe their own performance." Lysandra stood too. "What are you going to do?"
June looked at the cotton fields one more time. They whispered in the wind, a sound like hands clapping slowly, like approval or warning — she couldn't tell which.
"Same thing you're doing," she said.
Inside the house, a clock that hadn't kept accurate time in decades struck seven.
