The Glass Abacus

The fog in London did not descend so much as it rose—from the Thames, from the streets, from the lungs of a million people breathing coal smoke and giving up. It made everything look as though the world were being erased from the bottom up.

Lady Eleanor Ashworth watched it from her bedroom window on a Tuesday in November 1888 and counted the gas lamps visible through the murk. Sixteen. She counted them every evening at this hour, not because she needed to but because counting was the one thing her father had taught her that didn't feel like a cage.

"Sixteen lamps," she said to the empty room. "Sixteen times sixteen is two hundred and fifty-six. Two plus five plus six is thirteen. Thirteen is unlucky but it's also a prime number, which means it can't be divided, which means—"

She stopped. Counting was a spiral, and she was standing in the middle of one, going round and round, and if she kept counting she might find herself, as her aunt had, at the center where the numbers became so large they ceased to mean anything and became instead a kind of noise, a humming in the skull that never stopped.

She closed her eyes and counted backwards instead. Twenty, nineteen, eighteen, seventeen...

The invitation had arrived that morning: a scientific exhibition at South Kensington, dedicated to the "Advancements in Mathematical Computation." Her father had almost torn it up when the messenger delivered it—"Jewish exhibitors this year, apparently"—but something had stayed his hand. Perhaps pride. Perhaps the need to see what kind of device a Jewish immigrant had built that was worth exhibiting at all.

Eleanor put on her cloak and told her maid she was going out. The lie was small and cost nothing, which was how most lies began.

The exhibition hall was warm and crowded and smelled of machine oil and ambition. Eleanor moved through the crowds in her usual way—observing, calculating, remaining invisible. At twenty, she had mastered the art of being a lady in a room full of men who assumed she understood nothing. It was a useful skill, and one she deployed with precision.

Then she saw it.

On a wooden table, under a glass case, sat an object that was unlike anything she had ever seen. It was a calculating device—but not the clunky wooden abacuses commonly used in English schools, nor the brass mechanical calculators being demonstrated by German engineers. This was something else entirely: a frame of dark, polished hardwood, possibly rosewood, with rows of small, clear glass beads strung on fine wires. The frame was inlaid with intricate patterns—spiral motifs and mathematical equations carved so precisely that they seemed to glow in the lamplight.

It was beautiful. It was impossible. It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.

She leaned closer. The label read: "Calculating Instrument—Proprietory Design. Display by A. Pendelton."

"Can I help you, milady?"

She turned. A young man stood behind the table. He was perhaps twenty-two, with the pale, windburned skin of someone who'd traveled far to reach London, and eyes that were dark and intelligent and tired in a way that seemed disproportionate to his age. He wore simple clothes—a dark jacket, a white shirt that had been clean once but was now slightly gray at the collar from the city air.

"It's magnificent," she said honestly.

He smiled—a small, wry smile that seemed surprised to be there. "Thank you. Most people think it's a toy until they see it in operation."

"Can I?"

He hesitated, then lifted the glass case. The device was lighter than she expected. He placed it in her hands, and she felt the beads slide against each other with a sound like rain on glass.

"Try," he said.

She rolled a bead with her thumb. Then another. The movement was fluid, almost musical. She looked up at him. "What is your name?"

"Arthur Pendelton."

"Arthur Pendelton. May I ask—how long have you designed this?"

"My grandfather started it. In Poland, I believe you'd say. He was a mathematician—a very good one, by all accounts. And a very unlucky one."

"Unlucky how?"

"He had a design for a calculating device that was more elegant and more precise than anything being made in England or Germany. He brought it to London in eighteen seventy-two, hoping to patent it and make a living from it. He found a buyer instead—a gentleman by the name of Ashworth."

The glass abacus felt suddenly warm in her hands. "An Ashworth?"

"Your father, if I had to guess. Lord Ashworth. He bought the design for a pittance and patented it as his own invention. The money my grandfather received bought him three years of comfortable living and then ran out, and he returned to Poland with nothing, except the sketch of the original design that he'd kept in his pocket."

Eleanor felt the room tilt slightly. "That's extraordinary."

"That's theft."

She looked at him carefully. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you asked a lady's question, and I assumed you were prepared for a gentleman's answer."

She wanted to argue. But the truth of it sat in her chest like a stone. She was a lady, and she had asked a question, and the answer was that her family had built two generations of wealth on stolen intellectual property.

"How do I use it?" she asked, changing the subject.

He guided her through the basics—the placement of beads, the arithmetic of carrying and borrowing, the way the glass beads moved more smoothly than any wooden counter she'd ever seen. She learned quickly—too quickly, he told her, with an expression that was equal parts admiration and something she couldn't name.

"You have an unusual mind, milady."

"I have an unusual father. He made me study mathematics so I could help him manage accounts when my mother died. He didn't expect me to be good at it. I think he was surprised when I was."

"Surprised is not the same as pleased."

"No. It is not."

They talked for nearly an hour. She learned that Arthur was an apprentice at a clockmaker's shop in the City, that he'd come to London from Liverpool where his father worked in a factory, that he'd inherited his grandfather's sketches and spent three years building a device that matched the drawings. She told him about her father's failing business, about the marriage proposals she'd received from men twice her age, about the evening parties she attended with the enthusiasm of someone attending a funeral.

"You should teach," he said suddenly.

"Teach what?"

"Mathematics. You're clearly gifted. There must be women who—women who are like you. Who see the numbers the way you do. Someone should teach them."

"It would not be considered proper."

"Nothing about seeing numbers in everything is proper. That's what makes it remarkable."

She felt her face warm. No one had ever called her remarkable before. They called her pretty, or accomplished, or fortunate—not remarkable.

They met again the following week. And the week after that. Each time at the exhibition, each time behind the table where Arthur demonstrated his device to crowds of bored aristocrats and enthusiastic engineers. Each time, they talked—about mathematics, about books, about the strange loneliness of being intelligent in a world that valued beauty over brains and wealth over character.

On their fifth meeting, Eleanor brought a book—Byron's poetry, borrowed from her grandmother's library. Arthur read it with her, line by line, in a corner of the exhibition hall while the world buzzed around them.

"You read poetry," she said, amazed.

"I read everything. My grandmother said words are just numbers with feelings."

She looked at him across the table, the gaslight catching the glass beads of the abacus between them, and felt something shift in her chest—the way a number shifts when it moves from one side of an equation to the other, changing from a problem into a solution.

"Arthur," she said quietly, "what are you?"

He didn't look up from the poem. "A clockmaker's apprentice with a grandfather's sketches and a reputation for being too quiet and too smart for his own good. Why?"

"Because I think I'm falling in love with you."

The poem stopped halfway through its page. The crowd buzzed. The fog pressed against the windows. And Arthur Pendelton, who could calculate the trajectory of a bead across seventeen rows in less than a second, could not find a single number large enough to contain what he felt in that moment.

"I know," he said.
