WHAT WE CARRY

ACT I

The phone call came on a Tuesday at eleven in the morning. May was at work, sitting at her desk in the logistics company's office in Belltown, watching the rain hit the window and thinking about nothing in particular, which was the way she usually thought at work. When the phone rang, she answered it with the default politeness she reserved for all calls that were not from people she knew.

This is Donna in accounting, the woman said. Is this May Sullivan?

Yes.

This is Donna in accounting, the woman repeated, as if May had not heard her the first time. I am calling from Renton General. Your grandfather died last night.

May said nothing. She had heard the words, and she understood them, and she was processing them, which is what her body did when her mind needed time to catch up.

I am sorry, Donna said. I did not know who else to call.

Thank you, May said. And then, because there was nothing else to say and because silence felt like a failure even though it was the only honest response: I will be there.

She hung up the phone. She looked at the spreadsheet on her monitor, which contained data about shipping routes and delivery times and cost per ton, the kind of data that was important to people who needed to know whether a container of furniture was going from Seattle to Tokyo or Tokyo to Seattle and whether it would arrive on Thursday or Friday. She looked at the spreadsheet for two minutes. Then she closed it, stood up, and walked out of the office.

Her boss, a man named Richard who had been her boss for six years and knew her as the person who entered data accurately and rarely spoke in meetings and never took sick days, looked up when she passed his door and said: Everything okay?

Yes, she said. And it was, in the way that everything is okay when you have not yet realized that it is not.

She walked to the ferry terminal and stood on the deck and watched the rain fall on the water and the ferries pass and the mountains on the other side of the sound lose their tops in cloud, and she thought about her grandfather, who had died alone in a hospital bed in Renton, and she thought about how she had not visited him in three weeks, and she thought about how three weeks was nothing, three weeks was normal, three weeks was what you did when you lived two hours away and he was eighty-nine and you were twenty-eight and neither of you wanted to admit that either of you was afraid of the thing that was coming.

She did not cry on the ferry. She did not cry when she got to the hospital. She did not cry when she saw his body, which was covered with a sheet and looked, under the sheet, like something that had been used and set down and was now waiting to be picked up.

She did not cry at the funeral, which was small and quiet and held in a church in Renton that had been his church for forty years, with fewer attendees than the number of chairs. The minister talked about Gordon Sullivan's life: his thirty-eight years at the shipping company, his membership in the VFW, his habit of fixing his neighbors' gutters for free, his habit of calling her every Sunday at four o'clock to ask how her week had been and whether she was eating enough.

ACT II

She spent two weeks dealing with things. This is what you do when someone dies and you are the person who deals with things: you make arrangements, you sign forms, you sort through clothes and papers and the small objects that make up a life and decide which of them other people might want and which of them should go into a trash bag and be thrown away.

She went to his house in Renton every day. It was a small house, three bedrooms and a lawn that he had kept trimmed with the methodical care of a man who believed that taking care of things was the same thing as taking care of yourself. She found nothing extraordinary. No secret savings hidden in a mattress. No letters from a previous life. No dramatic revelations. Just a man who had worked hard, lived simply, and loved his family in the way that men of his generation loved their families: by showing up, by fixing the gutter, by calling on Sunday at four.

On the fourth day, she found a box in the back of his closet containing photographs. Hundreds of them, in shoeboxes and envelopes and a metal tin that had belonged to his wife, who had died ten years ago. May sat on the floor of his closet with the photographs spread around her and looked at them and saw a life she had known only from the margins: her mother as a child, her grandfather young and smiling next to a car that looked like it belonged in a different century, her mother and her grandfather at a beach she did not recognize, both of them laughing, both of them alive in a way that May had never seen either of them alive in the present tense.

She put the photographs back in the box and closed the closet door and sat on the floor for a long time, her back against the closet wall, and she thought: this is what I am sorting through. This is what I am deciding which of my cousins wants and which of my cousins does not. This is the inheritance: photographs of people who are dead and clothes that no longer fit and a house that needs to be sold and a life that adds up to exactly this and no more.

She did not cry.

On the tenth day, she went to the cemetery and stood at his grave and watched the dirt being poured in, which is a sound you do not forget: the soft, heavy sound of earth hitting wood, the sound of a man being put back into the ground from which he had been taken seventy-four years ago, when he was born and the world had not yet asked him to do anything with his life.

She stood there until the gravediggers were done and the families had left and the cemetery attendant was raking the path and sweeping up the leaves, and then she walked to her car and drove back to Seattle and went to her apartment and stood in the kitchen and stared at the wall.

ACT III

She stared at the wall for six hours.

Her apartment was small, a studio in Capitol Hill with a window that looked out at the fire escape and the brick wall of the building next door and the rain that had been falling since September and showed no sign of stopping. She had rented it five years ago, when she started at the logistics company, and it had seemed right at the time: small, manageable, hers. She had furnished it with things she had bought used: a couch from a thrift store, a table from a curb on a trash day, a lamp from a garage sale that had a shade with a crack in it and worked anyway.

She stood in the kitchen and stared at the wall and thought about nothing, which was not nothing, because thinking about nothing for six hours is its own kind of work, its own kind of reckoning, and what she reckoned with was this: she had spent seven years since her mother's death being fine. She had gone to work. She had come home. She had cooked dinners for one and eaten them at the table and washed the dishes and sat on the couch and watched television and gone to sleep and done it again the next day and the next and the next, and she had been fine, which is what you are supposed to be after seven years, or at least what you are supposed to pretend to be, because nobody wants to hear about the person who is not fine, and nobody wants to tell you that it is okay to not be fine, because then they would have to do something about it, and they do not want to do something about it.

Noah came over on the seventh day. He brought dinner, Chinese food from a place in Bellevue that his wife recommended, and he stood in her kitchen with the takeout containers on the counter and looked at her and said: You okay?

Yes, she said.

He did not believe her. He had known her since they were children, and he knew the difference between her fine and her not-fine, and right now she was somewhere in between, which was worse than not-fine, because not-fine you could fix. In-between you had to live with.

He sat down at her table and ate his dinner and she sat down across from him and ate hers and neither of them spoke, and this was, in its own way, the most honest conversation they had ever had.

After dinner, he said: You should come stay with us. Just through the winter. Emma wants you there. It would be good for you to be around other people.

She looked at him. She saw his face, which was kind and open and carrying the weight of a man who loves his family and does not know how to help them and is tired of trying and will keep trying anyway.

I do not want to stay with you, she said.

He did not flinch. I know, he said. But I am asking anyway.

I know that too, she said.

He stayed for another hour. He washed the dishes. She dried them. They stood in the kitchen together, the sound of the rain on the window, and the refrigerator humming, and the city outside carrying on, as it always carried on, indifferent to the fact that a woman had just lost her grandfather and was standing in her kitchen drying dishes and trying to figure out what came next.

When he left, he hugged her, which was unusual for them, and she let him, and she felt his arms around her and his chin on her shoulder and his breath warm against her hair, and she thought: this is what love feels like when it is not complicated. And then: this is what love feels like when it is not enough.

That night, she sat on the couch and stared at the wall again. She did not cry. She just sat there, in the dim light from the street lamp outside, and she listened to the rain and she thought about her grandfather's phone call every Sunday at four and the way he had sounded when he said: How was your week, kiddo? And the way she had answered: Fine. Fine. Fine. And the way she had meant it every time, which was the thing: she had meant it. She had been fine. And now she was not, and nobody had noticed, and now it was too late to be fine, and now the only thing left to do was to stop.

ACT IV

The next morning, she quit her job. She did not write a letter. She did not give two weeks' notice. She walked into Richard's office at nine in the morning and said: I am not coming back. And he said: May, what? And she said: I quit. And he said: Are you crazy? And she said: Probably. And she walked out.

She did not go home. She drove north. She did not know where she was going, which was fine, because she was fine with not knowing, which was new. She drove past Everett, past Bellingham, past the Canadian border, and she kept driving, because the driving was the point, the point being that she was moving, and movement was the opposite of staring at a wall, and that was what she needed: the opposite of what she had been doing.

She reached Anchorage at sunset, which was strange, because the sun was still high in the sky, which was what Alaska does: it makes you question your understanding of time and distance and the way the world is supposed to work. She pulled into a motel parking lot, got out of the car, and stood on the asphalt and looked at the mountains on the horizon, which were white with snow even though it was May, and she thought: this is what it feels like to be somewhere where nobody knows your name. And then: this is what it feels like to be free, if freedom is just another word for being irrelevant to everyone you have ever known.

She found the fishing camp on the Kenai Peninsula through a classified ad in a newspaper she had bought at a gas station in Montana, a small notice that read: Seasonal help needed. Kenai River camp. Room and board. No internet. Call Harold at the number listed. She called him from a pay phone in Homer, and he answered on the first ring, which suggested that he had been waiting for the phone to ring, and he said: Yes? and she said: I am calling about the job, and he said: You start Monday. Can you drive a truck? and she said: Yes, and he said: Good. See you Monday.

She drove to the camp on Monday. It was smaller than she expected: three cabins, a mess hall, a dock on the river, and the river, which was wide and fast and the color of steel, and it moved in a way that suggested it had somewhere to be and did not care what you thought about it. He looked at her. He had the flat, assessing gaze of a man who has spent his life hiring people and firing people and watching people decide whether to stay or go, and who had learned, over decades of doing it, that he could tell a lot about a person by looking at them for ten seconds.

Good, he said. Welcome to the camp.

She went to Cabin Three, which contained a cot, a desk, a chair, and a window that looked out at the river. She put her backpack on the cot, which was all she had brought, and she sat down and she listened to the river, which was loud and constant and indifferent to everything except its own direction, and she thought: this is enough. Not cured. Not transformed. Just somewhere new, and that is enough for now.

Outside, the rain started, the particular rain of the Pacific Northwest, which follows you even when you think you have left it behind, but in Alaska it was different. It did not soak. It did not press. It just fell, steadily, quietly, and then it stopped, and the river kept moving, and she sat in the cabin and she did not stare at a wall and she did not cry, and that was the most she could ask for.
