The Walker

The conscription notice arrived on a Tuesday, which Thomas Chan thought was ironic because Tuesdays were supposed to be ordinary days.

He was standing in his driveway in Queens, trying to fix a Toyota Camry that had been dying for months, when the messenger appeared. Young guy—couldn't have been older than twenty-two—wearing a federal uniform that looked like it had been ironed that morning.

"Mr. Thomas Chan?" the messenger asked, reading from a tablet.

"That's me."

"Under the Great Migration Act, Section 47, you have been assigned to Migration Convoy Seven. Reporting date is—"

"When?" Thomas wiped his hands on a rag. "When do I report?"

"The notification includes your reporting coordinates and time. Do you have questions?"

Thomas looked at the rag in his hand, then at the Camry, then at the messenger's perfectly pressed uniform. "Can I not go?"

The messenger's expression didn't change. It was the expression of someone who had practiced not reacting. "No, sir. According to the Act, refusal is a felony punishable by—"

"Right. Felony. Got it."

His wife Margaret came out onto the porch when she heard the word felony. She was Filipino-American, dark-haired, with eyes that had been worrying since before the notice arrived.

"Thomas?" she said. "What did they say?"

"Nothing good."

She cried. Not dramatically—just quietly, the way she had been crying since the factory closed, since the mortgage went underwater, since everything started falling apart one piece at a time. Their daughter Amy, twelve years old, appeared behind her mother and said the thing that Thomas would remember longest:

"Go, Dad. I'll save money for the road."

Thomas reported to Convoy Seven three days later. It was a collection of three hundred modified trucks—former semis, civilian vehicles, military transports—that had been strung together like a metallic serpent stretching across the abandoned highways. The convoy was moving west, following the Mississippi, heading for what the government called the Kansas Settlement Zone. Nobody called it that. They called it "somewhere."

Thomas's job was driving. He had been a truck driver for ten years, first for a local delivery company, then for himself. Now he was a driver for the greatest migration in human history, and his pay was 0.3 credits per mile.

The other drivers were a miscellaneous lot. There was Dave, a software engineer who had fled San Francisco after his building was seized for unpaid taxes. "I owe about four hundred thousand dollars," he told Thomas on the first night, parked beside the Missouri River. "So technically, if I die out here, my estate is better off. It's a positive."

There was Susan, running from a husband who had become violent after losing his job. She sat in the back of Thomas's truck with their cat and rarely spoke.

There was Mike, a former Marine who kept saying he was "looking for adventure." Thomas didn't trust him. Mike looked at everything like it was a potential threat.

Thomas didn't talk much. He drove, he fixed things when the trucks broke down, and he saved his credits. Every extra repair job, every overtime hour, went into a jar he kept under his seat. University wasn't free anymore—nothing was—but if he saved enough, maybe Amy could go on a scholarship. Maybe.

Every Monday, he wrote her a letter. He had a satellite phone for emergencies, but letters felt more real.

"Different from fixing ToyoTa," he wrote in his first letter. "Big trucks, long roads. Don't worry about me."

He wrote every Monday. He never sent them—they were too expensive to transmit—but writing them made him feel like he was still a father and not just a pair of hands on a steering wheel.

The convoy moved slowly. Ten miles a day on good ground. Five on bad. They crossed the Mississippi, the Missouri, the plains of Nebraska. The landscape changed from suburban sprawl to farmland to nothing at all—just flat, empty ground stretching to a horizon that seemed to retreat as they approached.

In the Rockies, the convoy stopped.

A storm had hit with no warning—white-out conditions, wind at sixty miles per hour, temperature dropping to thirty below. The trucks formed a defensive circle, engines idling, crews huddled inside for warmth.

On the second day, rations became an issue. On the third day, the government liaison—an official named Patterson who had been assigned to "oversee convoy morale"—announced that fuel was running low. To preserve enough for the lead vehicles to reach the Settlement Zone, some trucks would need to be abandoned.

"Priority ranking will be applied," Patterson said, standing in the central truck with a heater that consumed more fuel than all of Thomas's combined. "Essential personnel and their vehicles will continue. Non-essential—"

"Essential?" Thomas stood up. "I'm a driver. I'm essential."

Patterson looked at his list. "Convoy Seven, vehicle 247—your priority classification is C. Non-essential."

C. Not even B-minus. Just C.

Thomas sat down. He looked at Dave, who was scrolling through offline maps on his tablet. He looked at Susan, who was holding her cat. He looked at Mike, who was cleaning his rifle.

That night, Thomas's satellite phone rang. He stared at it for a full minute before answering.

"Dad?" It was Amy. Her voice crackled through the static. "How are you?"

He looked out the window at the storm. At the frozen ground. At the other trucks huddled together like animals in a blizzard.

"Fine, baby. Just fine."

"Are you cold?"

"No. It's warm in here."

"Are you coming home soon?"

He thought about saying yes. He thought about telling her they'd turn around tomorrow, drive back to Queens, face whatever came next together. But he couldn't say that. She needed him to be someone who knew where he was going, even when he didn't.

"There are flowers at the new place," he said. "All kinds. Roses, daisies, things I've never even heard of. When we get there, I'll take you to the garden."

"Really?"

"Really. I promise."

"Okay, Dad. I love you."

"I love you too, Amy."

He hung up. He sat in the dark truck for a long time. Outside, the storm raged. Inside, Thomas Chan drove his hands across his face and tried to hold onto a promise he wasn't sure he could keep.

They reached the Kansas Settlement Zone two weeks later. It was a collection of prefabricated buildings and mobile homes spread across flat land that stretched in every direction. No flowers. Just dirt and wind and the skeletal remains of what used to be a town.

Thomas opened a repair shop six months later. He fixed trucks, lawnmowers, anything with an engine. On weekends, he picked Amy up from school and drove her to the community garden, where they looked at the dirt and pretended it was soil.

Sometimes, at night, he thought about the convoy. About the people he had driven with—Dave, Susan, Mike. Some of them had made it. Some hadn't. He never knew which was which.

A journalist once interviewed him for a local paper. "You participated in the greatest migration in human history," the journalist said. "What does that feel like?"

Thomas looked at his hands—calloused, stained with oil, knuckles swollen from years of wrench-turning.

"I just drove a truck for ten years," he said. And went back to work.
