But lately, after the storms, there was a residue in the dust that the eye could not quite catch—a blueness at the edge of vision, a color that vanished when you looked at it directly and reappeared when you looked away.

The family that had lived here—a man, a woman, three children according to the school records in the county seat—was no longer present. Their absence was the loudest thing on the farm. The man's shirt still hung on a nail by the barn door, the sleeves stiffened by dried sweat. The woman's apron still lay across the back of a kitchen chair, the strings tied in a bow that only her fingers could have made. The dust continued to fall. It covered the plate, the spoon, the ledger, the jar. It covered the letter that was never mailed. It covered the drawing of the smiling shape in the sky. It covered the quilt, the boots, the shirt, the apron. It covered the furrows in the field, the post holes where the fence had been, the dried creek bed where the blue powder had first appeared. It covered everything, patient and gray and without judgment, preserving what the people had left behind and what had left the people behind.

And in the jar on the shelf, the blue soil continued its slow respiration, waiting for the next storm, waiting for the next hand to open the lid, waiting for whatever language the roots had been speaking to find a voice that could answer.
