The Unwelcome
The first sign was a letter to the editor of the local newspaper.
It appeared in the March 2005 edition of the Worthington Gazette, a small weekly that covered the three counties of central Ohio and had a readership of approximately twelve thousand people, most of whom were over sixty and voted Republican. The letter was signed by a woman named Patricia Holloway, who identified herself as a retired schoolteacher and a member of the Worthington Community Church.
"I am writing," the letter said, "to express my concern about the new faculty member at the university. I have learned that Dr. Amir Hassan, who joined the Department of Middle Eastern Studies this fall, has published articles in journals that I am told have ties to organizations that are not friendly to the United States. "Of what? Of an anonymous accusation with no content?"

"As what?"
"As controversial."

He left the office with the understanding, unspoken but unmistakable, that the university would not protect him. That if the accusations grew loud enough, the institution would distance itself from him, not because it believed the accusations, but because it was easier than fighting them.

Amir's course on modern Middle Eastern history had enrolled thirty-seven students at the beginning of the semester. By the fifth week, the enrollment had dropped to twenty-two. By the eighth week, it was fourteen.
He asked the registrar what had happened. The registrar told him that students had withdrawn, citing "personal reasons." He asked if there had been any complaints about the course content. The registrar said there had not been. He asked if any of the students who had withdrawn had explained their decision. The registrar said that one student had mentioned that her parents were uncomfortable with the subject matter.
"Parents," Amir said. "Not students. Parents."
"I am sorry, Dr. Hassan. I am just reporting what I was told."
He taught the remaining fourteen students with the same rigor and passion he had always brought to his work. But the room felt different. Amir set down the cilantro. He looked at the woman's face, searching for some sign of malice or cruelty or the kind of hatred that recognized itself. He found none. She was not angry. She was not afraid. She was simply certain—certain that she was right, certain that he was dangerous, certain that her certainty required no evidence beyond what she had read in the paper.
"Ma'am," he said, "I have never met your son. I do not know his name. I have never taught him. I have never done anything to harm him."
"I know," she said. "But that is not the point."
"Then what is the point?"
"The point is that you do not belong here. This is a small town. We take care of our own. And you are not one of us. You will never be one of us. That is not about politics or religion or what you publish. It is about the fact that your presence makes us uncomfortable, and we would prefer to be comfortable."
She turned and walked away, leaving him standing in the produce section, holding nothing, surrounded by vegetables that suddenly seemed foreign in his hands. I am tired of our daughter asking why people stare at her in the grocery store. I am tired of being the family that everyone is talking about."
"Where would we go?"
"Anywhere. Another university. Another town. Another country, if we have to. There are places where people do not treat you like a disease."
"The entire country is like this," Amir said. "Not everywhere, but everywhere has some version of it. The suspicion does not go away because you move. It just finds a new shape."
"Then we fight."
"How do you fight a shadow?"

Amir did not fight. He did not write letters to the editor. He did not file a complaint with the university. He did not call the ACLU or the campus newspaper or the local television station. He simply endured. He taught his fourteen students. He published another article. He took the bus for three weeks while he saved the money to replace the tire.
The semester ended. The enrollment for the spring semester was six students. The university canceled the course and reassigned Amir to a research position with no teaching duties, citing "low enrollment."
The letter from Patricia Holloway had done exactly what it was designed to do. It had not accused him of anything specific. It had not provided any evidence. It had simply raised a question, planted a seed, cast a shadow. The community of Worthington never knew that he had left.
