The Edinburgh Cure
I.
Clara Reid was the brightest student I had ever met, and she was also a woman, which meant that her brightness was, to most people at the Edinburgh Medical School, an inconvenience rather than an achievement.
I first saw her in the anatomy theatre during my second year. She was standing at the far end of the room, next to the window, and she was dissecting a cadaver's brachial plexus with a precision that made the professor pause and come over to look. She was twenty-three, slight of frame, with dark hair that she wore pulled back in a severe bun that emphasized the sharp angles of her face and the intensity of her grey eyes.
The professor was a man named Blackwood—Professor Edmund Blackwood, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, a man whose authority in Edinburgh was second only to the King's, and whose opinion of women in medicine was best described as politely contemptuous.
"Miss Reid," he said, peering at her work with the expression of a man who has found a fly in his soup. "I am unaware that the Faculty has authorized you to perform this dissection."

"Very well, Miss Reid," he said. "But should your dissection prove... inadequate... I will not hesitate to fail you."
"I appreciate the opportunity to prove you wrong, sir."
I was sitting two rows behind them. I was twenty-five, from a village in the Highlands, and I had come to Edinburgh because I had a scholarship and a determination and no money, and I was studying medicine because I believed, with the kind of certainty that comes from being poor and young and convinced that the world owes you something, that education was the ladder and intelligence was the handgrip and if you just climbed fast enough and held on tight enough, you would reach something better than where you started.

II.

But I took her hand and she let me take her hand and that night, in a hostel on Sauchiehall Street with rain against the window and the sound of the city muffled and distant, I decided that I loved her with a intensity that frightened me, because I had never loved anyone before and I knew, with the kind of certainty that comes from science and not sentiment, that this was real.
III.
The accident happened on a Thursday in November 1896.
We were working in the microbiology laboratory at the Royal Infirmary. Clara had been culturing a strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for three months, studying its growth patterns and its response to various antiseptic agents. She had developed a theory that certain fungal compounds might inhibit the growth of the tuberculosis bacterium, and she was testing it systematically, with the kind of methodical rigour that makes science possible.

I stood there for a long time. The wind was cold. The sky was grey. A gull cried somewhere, and its cry was the only sound that mattered, because it was the sound of something that did not care.
And I made a decision.
Clara had spent her last two years working on a theory about fungal compounds and tuberculosis. She had not completed the work. She had not had the time. But she had left notes. Detailed, precise, methodical notes. And I would finish them.

V.

And I had done it.
On a morning in March, in a laboratory that smelled of yeast and phenol and the particular metallic odour that comes from heating copper compounds, I held in my hand a petri dish that contained a culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that had been exposed to a compound derived from Penicillium notatum, and the culture was clear. Not cloudy. Not turbid. Clear.
