The Disengagement
The waiting room smelled like antiseptic and old magazines. Catherine Murphy sat in the third chair on the left, reading the same article in Psychology Today for the fourth time. The article was about post-traumatic stress in first responders. It used the word resilience in every paragraph.
Frank Delaney sat two chairs away, staring at the wall. He was wearing a jacket that was too warm for May, the kind of jacket you wear when you need to feel something other than what is inside you. His hands were folded in his lap, palms down, fingers still. He looked like a man waiting for a bus. He looked like a man who had waited for buses in places where buses did not come.
Cate had been coming to these sessions for eleven weeks. Mandatory. The word was stamped on a form she had signed at the VA counseling center on Rockville Pike. Section 14.C: Service-connected trauma exposure requires quarterly mental health check-ins. She had served. She had been exposed. She had signed.
Frank arrived at the same time every Thursday. 10:15. Sometimes 10:17. He never late. Never early. The consistency was almost comforting. Almost.
"Hi," Cate said on the eleventh week, because something in her had decided that silence was not the answer.
He turned his head. His eyes were gray. They had the flat quality of someone who had seen too much light—explosions, camera flashes, the kind of light that leaves an afterimage on your retinas for hours.
"Hi," he said.
They nodded. This was their interaction. This was their relationship. Two people in a waiting room, neither of whom had been to the same war but both of whom carried the same silence.

The first time they spoke to each other outside the waiting room, it was at a 7-Eleven off Rockville Pike. Cate was buying coffee and a pack of gum. He was behind her, buying bottled water and a protein bar. She heard him say the number of his items to the teenager at the register. Six. The teenager scanned them with the expression of someone whose future did not include this exact moment.
"Thermal?" the teenager asked, noticing the coffee.
"Yeah."
"You work out?"
"No. I sleep badly."
The teenager nodded. The teenager had heard this before.
Cate paid. She stepped outside. He was standing by the entrance, opening his water. The May air was warm and humid, the kind of Maryland humidity that makes your shirt stick to your back before you have done anything.
"Thermal coffee in May," she said.
"Hot coffee in any month," he said. "Cold coffee is just bitter water."
She almost smiled. Almost.
"I'm Catherine."
"Frank."
She waited for him to ask what she did. He did not. She did not volunteer it. They stood outside a 7-Eleven for exactly forty-seven seconds before a car pulled up and he got in and drove away. She went to her apartment three streets over and drank her coffee standing at the kitchen window.

They began eating together on a Thursday. It happened the way these things happen—neither of them had planned it, both of them were hungry, the diner on Grove Avenue had pancakes that were the size of plates and cost twelve dollars, and neither of them had cooked a meal for themselves in months.
"I was in Afghanistan," he said, on the second dinner. Not as a confession. As a fact, the way you might say I was in Cleveland or I was at the grocery store.
"I know," she said. And then, because the truth had a weight that required distribution: "I was there too."
He looked at her. Not with surprise. With recognition. The kind of recognition that says you have been carrying something you thought was yours alone, and someone else is carrying it too, and now neither of you has to pretend.
"What county?" he asked.
"Nangarhar," she said. "Khost road. You?"
"Kandahar. Camp Bastion."
She nodded. She did not ask him what he did. She did not ask him what she did. They ordered dessert. They did not eat it.

They moved into an apartment in Silver Spring in October. It was a third-floor walk-up with a view of the highway and a kitchen that smelled like the previous tenant had cooked fish. Cate paid six hundred of the rent. Frank paid the rest, through VA disability payments that took three months to process and were smaller than he had expected, which was something he did not say out loud.
They tried. The word tried is important because it is the only word that fits. They tried things that people try when they want something to work but are not sure what the shape of working is.
They cooked dinner on Fridays. They ate on the counter because they did not have a table. They talked about small things—the traffic on I-495, the landlord who never fixed the water heater, the dog that walked past the building at seven every morning.
They did not talk about the things that were between them, shaped like people they had known and did not know anymore, shapes that had been removed but left the space where they had been.
On November three, they had their first argument. It was about money. Frank's VA paperwork was stuck in a loop—the system required a medical evaluation that required a scheduling appointment that required a form that required the medical evaluation. Cate understood the mechanics of it but not the feeling of it, which is to say she understood the problem and not the person who had the problem.
"I can cover more," she said.
"No."
"Frank—"
"No, Cate. I can handle it."
He could not handle it. She could see that. But she could not see how to handle it either, and so they stood in the kitchen, the dog walking past at eight in the morning, and neither of them said the word that was between them.
The word was not war. The word was not trauma. The word was not even afraid.
The word was I do not know how to be near you and keep myself alive.

December came. They stopped cooking dinner on Fridays. They started eating separately—Cate at the counter, Frank in the living room, both of them scrolling through phones they did not need to scroll.
She took a roll of film out of her camera bag on December fifteenth. It had been sitting in her closet for eight months. She had loaded it in Kandahar. She had developed it in a darkroom in Jalalabad. She had not looked at the negatives since.
She sat on the floor of her bathroom, the enlarger's orange light on the wall, and looked at the first image.
A boy, maybe seven years old, sitting on a curb next to a motorcycle that had been there before the bomb and was still there after the bomb, exactly the same and exactly different. His face was wet. He was not crying. He was looking at the motorcycle as if it had betrayed him.
Cate sat on the bathroom floor for two hours. She went through the whole roll. Twenty-four photographs. She had not looked at any of them. She knew what she had seen in Kandahar. She knew what she had carried back.
Frank found her there, on the floor, the orange light on the wall, the negatives hanging from the shower curtain rod like dried leaves.
"What is this?" he asked.
"Nothing," she said.
"You should develop them."
"No. I should not."
He stood in the doorway for a moment. Then he closed the bathroom door and went to the kitchen and made thermal coffee in a mug that said World's Okayest Golfer, which was not his and had belonged to the previous tenant.

They parted on a Tuesday in March. Not dramatically. Not with a fight. With a conversation that lasted seventeen minutes and covered exactly three topics: the lease, the cat (which Cate kept because she was the one who had picked it out at the shelter), and the question of whether they should try again in six months.
"I don't think so," Frank said. "Not because I don't want to. Because I don't know if I can."
"Same," she said. And then, because the truth had a weight that required distribution even at the end: "I think I need to go somewhere I do not hear traffic."
"Montana," he said. "My parents have land. I can install solar. I can hear nothing."
She nodded. "I'm going to develop the photographs."
He stood up. He touched her shoulder, briefly, the way you touch something fragile when you are not sure if you are allowed to. "Good," he said.
He left at 3:47 p.m. She sat at the kitchen table and watched him walk down the street, his hands in his pockets, his jacket too warm for March, the way he walked like a man who is listening for something he cannot identify.

Three years later, Cate stood in a small gallery in Philadelphia. The photographs were on the wall. Twenty-four from Kandahar. Twelve from Nangarhar. Eight from places she did not name. The exhibition was called The Space Between and it was about the space between the moment you press the shutter and the moment you understand what the photograph shows.
A woman in her sixties stood in front of the curb photograph. "This one," she said to Cate. "This one stays with me."
Cate nodded. "Thank you."
At home that evening, she opened a drawer in her desk. Inside was a single envelope. No return address. No stamp visible. Inside, a postcard from Montana. A photograph of solar panels on a roof, snow on the ground, a mountain in the distance that was neither impressive nor unimpressive. On the back, in handwriting she recognized but did not want to confirm:
The panels work. The silence works too.
No signature. No date. No message other than the statement of fact.
She placed the postcard on the shelf above her desk, between a book and a coffee mug. She did not frame it. She did not throw it away. She left it there, unsigned, sitting in a drawer that was not a drawer anymore, and went back to her camera, which was sitting on the table, waiting for her to look at the world again.
