The Glass Bead Collector
The story begins.
I met Arthur Delaney in the autumn of 1952. He moved into the top floor of our apartment building on West 73rd Street, and the first time I saw him, he was carrying a box that was bigger than he was. The box was stuffed with books and glass beads—hundreds of them, in colors and shapes I could not have named if you had held a gun to my head.
"Need a hand?" I asked. I was an editor at the New York Herald Tribune at the time, and I had just come home from work, carrying my own box (smaller, containing books and a typewriter ribbon and a half-eaten sandwich), and I recognized the look of a man who was about to discover that moving is the most humbling experience in adult life.
"I've got it," Arthur said, but he did not have it. The box was slipping from his grip, and glass beads were scattering across the floor like hail.
I set down my box and helped him pick them up. There were greens and blues and ambers and one particularly striking red that rolled under the radiator and did not come out until I prodded it with a pencil for two minutes.
"What are all these?" I asked, kneeling beside him, gathering beads into my palm.

I laughed. Not because I thought he was joking. Because I didn't know what else to do. Arthur Delaney was a professor of psychology at Columbia University. He would be on the subway and help a stranger, because the stranger was "emitting" a signal of despair that was so loud Arthur could hear it over the clatter of the train. He would call a random phone number in the middle of the night because he "knew," with a certainty that was not reasoning but feeling, that someone on the other end was crying.
Clara, his wife, explained it to me once. "I can hear you singing," Arthur said, on the morning he got out of bed for the first time in three months. "It's the only thing I can hear clearly."
"That's because it's real," Clara said.
1953. McCarthyism. The HUAC hearings. Names being named and names being burned and careers being destroyed because a man in a room in Washington decided that someone was a communist or a fellow traveler or a security risk.
Arthur's student, a young teaching assistant named Robert Ellison, was called before the HUAC. He refused to name his former mentor—a professor at NYU who had been accused of being a communist. Robert was blacklisted. He lost his teaching position. He could not find work in academia. He could not find work anywhere.
Arthur spoke out publicly. He wrote an article for the New York Times Magazine. He testified before a Senate subcommittee. He said, in words that were carefully chosen and carefully dangerous: "This is not America. The moment we start policing what people think instead of what they do, we have ceased to be a free society."
His career nearly ended. Colleagues who had been friendly before suddenly avoided him in the hallway. Former friends stopped returning his calls. His office at Columbia was vandalized—a note was scrawled on the door in red paint: Traitor.
Clara helped him hire the best lawyer he could find. The lawyer cost more than Arthur made in a month. Clara paid for it with her own money—money she had earned designing stage lights for Broadway productions.
But what hurt Arthur most was not his own troubles. It was what he felt—the fear. Not his fear. The city's fear. The country's fear. An invisible, pervasive terror that was in the air like smog, and he could smell it, could taste it, could feel it pressing against his skin like a physical weight.

1954. The Senate voted to censure McCarthy. The hearings ended. The fear receded, slowly, like a tide going out, leaving behind a landscape that was damaged but not destroyed.
Arthur breathed easier. But he was too exhausted. The years of empathy overload—the years of hearing every frequency, feeling every thought, carrying the weight of a city's fear—had taken their toll.
His body gave out. Not physically. Doctors found nothing wrong with him. But his spirit was drained. He could no longer distinguish between his own feelings and other people's. He would sit in his apartment for hours, staring at the wall, unable to tell which sadness was his and which belonged to the woman crying in the apartment below or the man weeping on the subway or the child afraid in the room across the street.

The treatments made him feel numb—like someone had put a thick blanket over his mind, muffling the noise but also muffled everything else: color, taste, the warmth of sunlight on his face.
Clara visited every day. I went sometimes. I would sit in the visitors' room, drinking terrible coffee from a paper cup, and wait for my turn to see Arthur.
One afternoon, I met Clara in the corridor. She was wearing her best dress, but her eyes were red. She had been crying, or she had been about to cry, or she had been crying for so long that there was nothing left.

She looked at Arthur through the window of his room. He was sitting in a chair by the window, staring at nothing. The noise was still there, but it was different—muffled, distorted, like a radio that had been tuned to a station just slightly off-frequency. He could hear the music but not the words, the shape of feelings but not their content.
He stopped teaching. He accepted a part-time position at a small liberal arts college in New England—Middlebury, Vermont. He taught literature, not psychology. Literature did not require empathy. It required analysis. And Arthur, it turned out, was very good at analysis.
Before he left, he gave me half his glass bead collection.
"These are part of you," he said, handing me a box that contained roughly two hundred beads in every color and shape I could imagine. "Now they're mine."
We stood in his empty apartment. The bookshelves were bare. The bowls were empty. The strings hanging from the ceiling were gone. Only the green bead remained on the desk.

He picked up the green bead and held it to the window light. Light passed through it and threw a green patch on the wall, and in that green patch, I swear I saw something—a shape, or a feeling, or the ghost of a memory that was not mine.
"This bead remembers Clara's hand," he said.
He left the next morning. I drove him to the train station in Burlington. We did not say goodbye. We shook hands. He said: "Write to me."
I did. Letters came once, then twice a month, then once a month. They contained poetry—short, spare poems in the style of the New England poets he was teaching. Nothing about psychology. Nothing about the war. Just poems about snow and trees and the long, dark Vermont winters.
Last year, Clara sent me a photograph. Arthur, sitting in a classroom at the Middlebury college, in front of a dozen students. He was smiling. Not the tight, strained smile he had worn in the years before Bellevue. A real smile. The kind that starts in the eyes and works its way down.
On the back of the photograph, in Clara's handwriting: "He finally tuned to the right frequency."
I saw Arthur once, two years later. He was in New York, visiting Clara, who had returned to Broadway to design lights for a new production. We met for coffee at a diner on 42nd Street. He looked different—older, perhaps, but also lighter, as if some of the weight that had pressed on him in New York had lifted.
"Vermont suits you," I said.
"It does. The noise is quieter there. Fewer people. Fewer thoughts."
"Is it still there? The empathy?"
"Sometimes. I feel things still. But I can turn the volume down. I think that's what getting older is—learning to turn the volume down."
We talked for an hour. He told me about his students, about the poetry he was writing, about the garden he had started behind the college. He asked about me, about my work at the Tribune, about my life. He remembered things I had told him years ago—small things, details I had almost forgotten—and it struck me, as it always did when I spoke to Arthur, how much of the world he carried inside him, even when he could no longer feel it.
Before he left, he stopped at the corner store and bought a pack of gum and, on impulse, a small green glass bead. He held it up to the fluorescent light of the store and looked at it for a long time.
"What does this one remember?" I asked.
Arthur smiled. "I don't know. But I think it remembers a man standing in a corner store in New York, buying a green bead on impulse, because something inside him said it was important, even though he couldn't tell you what."
He put the bead in his pocket and walked out into the street, and I watched him go, and I thought about the green light, and the frequency, and the way that sometimes, in a city of eight million people, you can tune to the right frequency and hear someone singing, and that is enough.
