Cold-Brew
The notice had been taped to the door for three days. Marnie had walked past it every morning on her way to flip the open sign and every evening on her way back inside to lock the deadbolt and count the cash in the register, which was always less than she expected and never more than she needed.
CLOSED DUE TO PLUMBING ISSUES
She had taped it there herself, using the kind of tape that lost its stickiness after an hour and then needed to be replaced with another piece that would also lose its stickiness after an hour. It was a ritual. The notice was not about plumbing. There was no plumbing issue. The issue was that Marnie had stopped caring whether people came or not, and the notice was a way of telling the world that she had stopped caring too.
The coffee shop was the size of a walk-in closet with a counter and two tables and a fridge that rattled every time it kicked on, like a man snoring in the next room. Marnie had named it nothing. It did not have a name. It was the thing on the corner of Mill and Fourth that sold coffee and occasionally had sandwiches if you called ahead, which nobody did.
She was thirty-five. She had come to Millerton three months ago, with a box of personal belongings and a severance package from a company in Silicon Valley that she had worked for for four years and from which she had been fired for reasons she would not discuss with anyone. The reasons were not important. What was important was that she had arrived in Millerton with no plan and a bank account that said she could survive on it for eleven months if she was careful, and that she had opened a coffee shop on Mill Street because it was the only thing she knew how to do that did not involve Zoom meetings.
Ray lived upstairs. She knew this because she had seen him once, carrying a box of books up the stairs at seven in the morning, and because every night at eleven, when the building was quiet, she could hear him on the floor above, moving something heavy across hardwood. He did it every night. Sometimes it sounded like furniture. Sometimes it sounded like a person pacing.
She had complained once. She had gone upstairs and knocked on his door and a man had opened it, and he had looked at her with eyes that were grey and tired and said "sorry" and closed the door, and the noise had stopped for three nights and then resumed. She had not complained again.
The sandwich board outside said COFFEE $2.50 in letters that were printed on a machine at the pharmacy and then taped to a piece of plywood. Marnie had not written them herself. She was not a person who wrote things on boards. She was a person who had written things on whiteboards in conference rooms and then had those things deleted from servers and had her access revoked.
On a Tuesday in late August, she found the note.
It was in a magazine on the counter—the kind of men's lifestyle magazine that the building's previous tenant had left behind and that Marnie had never thought to throw away because throwing things away required an intention she did not possess. The magazine was open to an article about grilling that she did not read, but it was the bookmark that caught her attention. It was a receipt from a coffee shop three blocks from here, dated three years ago, and on the back, in handwriting that was neat but hurried, someone had written:
try the dark roast. it's different.
Marnie looked at the note. She looked at the magazine. She looked at the ceiling, where she could hear the sound of something heavy being moved across hardwood.
She put the magazine down and made herself a coffee—dark roast, because that was all she sold—and walked upstairs.
The door was unlocked. She opened it and stepped into a room that looked like a gym had been built inside someone's apartment and then someone had given up on both the gym and the apartment. Dumbbells were on the floor. Resistance bands hung from the ceiling like vines in an abandoned greenhouse. A treadmill sat in the corner, unplugged. There was a bed in the far corner, unmade, and a desk with no chair, and on the desk was a single framed photograph of a boy who looked about six years old and was missing a front tooth.
Ray was not there. Marnie stood in the doorway for a moment, holding the coffee cup, and then she set it on the desk beside the photograph and walked back downstairs.
She did not knock. She did not call out. She went back to the counter and flipped the open sign and waited for customers who did not come.
That night, at eleven, the noise upstairs was louder than usual. It sounded like someone was running in place, fast, the kind of running that has nowhere to go and so stays exactly where it is. Marnie lay in her bed, which was in the same room as her coffee machine, and listened to the running and thought about the note and the photograph and the man who lived above her head and made his apartment sound like a prison yard at reveille.
At half past eleven, the running stopped. At twelve, the building went dark.
The power had gone out before, but not like this—not with such suddenness, as if someone had flipped a switch in the sky. The rattling fridge stopped. The streetlights outside went out. Even the crickets seemed to pause, uncertain about whether to continue.
Marnie sat up in bed. She was not afraid. Fear required energy, and she had learned, over the past four years of her life, that energy was a currency you spent carefully or not at all.
She stood up, found the flashlight in the drawer under her counter, and turned it on. The beam was yellow and weak, but it was enough. She put on her shoes, walked upstairs, and knocked on Ray's door.
No answer. She knocked again, harder.
"Ray?"
Nothing.
She tried the handle. The door was unlocked. She pushed it open.
The room was dark except for the faint light from the street coming through the blinds. She could see the shape of the bed, the desk, the treadmill. She could see the coffee cup she had left there, sitting on the desk beside the photograph.
And she could see Ray, sitting on the floor with his back against the wall, a glass in his hand, staring at the floor the way people stare at things when they are trying not to look at the ceiling.
"Sorry," he said. It was the same word he had said three months ago when she had complained about the noise. "I didn't hear you come in."
"You didn't hear me knock."
"The power went out. I was running. It's how I... it's what I do when I can't sleep."
She turned off the flashlight and sat down beside him on the floor. They were probably a foot apart. She could not see his face in the dark, but she could hear his breathing, which was shallow and uneven, like a man who had been holding something in and was tired of holding it.
"I left you coffee," she said.
"Thanks."
"Did you drink it?"
"No. I was waiting for morning."
"Why?"
" habit. Coffee is a morning thing. Even when it isn't."
She laughed, and it was a short sound, not funny, more like a reflex. "I used to work in Silicon Valley. I was a product manager. I managed a team of twelve people. I had two meetings a day, every day, and one of them was called stand-up, which is what it sounds like: twelve people standing in a room saying what they did yesterday and what they would do today. It was the most meaningless conversation I have ever had, repeated twice a day for four years."
Ray was quiet. She could tell he was listening. This was his gift: he could listen the way some people can play music, without performing it, without making it about himself.
"My son lives with his mother," he said. "Six years old. His name is Mateo. His mother left when he was six months old. She said she couldn't do it. I don't blame her. I couldn't do it either, not at first. I would look at him and I would know he needed me to be someone I didn't know how to be yet."
"How is he now?"
"He's fine. He's six. Six is fine. Six is... I call him on Sundays. He tells me about school. He tells me his friend has a dog. He tells me he learned to ride a bike without training wheels. I tell him I'm proud of him. I tell him this every Sunday and some Sundays it feels like the only true thing I have said all week."
She reached out in the dark and found his hand. It was cold. She held it for a moment and then let go, because holding it for longer would have made it about something it was not.
"It's going to rain," she said.
"Yeah," he said. "I can hear it starting."
They sat in the dark for forty-seven minutes. Then she stood up. He stood up. She walked downstairs. He followed her to the door and stood in the doorway and watched her go.
The rain started at one in the morning. It was the kind of rain that sounds like static, a constant hiss that fills every space between sounds. Marnie lay in her bed and listened to the rain and thought about the note and the photograph and the man upstairs who had been running in place for three months and who had finally, in the dark, stopped running.
In the morning, the rain stopped. The power came back on. The fridge rattled. The streetlights flickered and went out, unnecessary.
Marnie went downstairs, flipped the open sign, and made herself a coffee. At eight o'clock, she walked outside and placed two chairs on the sidewalk in front of the shop. She did not know why. She did not plan to sit in them. She placed them there because someone had placed a note in a magazine three years ago, and the note had said: try the dark roast. it's different.
The chairs were an answer to the note. They were not words. They were not a promise. They were two metal chairs on a sidewalk in a town that nobody visited unless they had to, placed there by a woman who had stopped caring but was still, somehow, placing them.
At eight-fifteen, the door opened. A man walked in. He was tall, wearing a white shirt that had been washed too many times, with shoes that were scuffed at the toes. He looked at the counter, looked at Marnie, and said nothing.
He ordered an Americano. She made it. He paid. He sat at one of the tables that was inside, not outside, and drank his coffee in the way people drink coffee when they are not drinking it for the taste but for the ritual of holding a warm cup in their hands and pretending the warmth is enough.
Marnie watched him from behind the counter. He was drinking her coffee. He was sitting in her shop. He was the man from upstairs.
She turned around and went back to the register and counted the money, which was less than she expected and never more than she needed.
