"Sign the contract," she said. "Not because I want to. Because I want to see what happens when a man who has destroyed everything has nothing left to destroy."

He did not pull his hand away. He did not take her hand. He let it rest on his, a foreign object placed on a battlefield, and said nothing.

In October 1892, the seventh and final Syndic fell. His name was Caldwell, and he was the most powerful of them all—a man who controlled the railroad connections between New Orleans and Chicago, who had friends in Washington, who had once dined with the President. Edward did not go after Caldwell's business. He went after his reputation.
