The earlier pages had been written in a tight, precise hand, the kind of writing that belonged to a man who believed that order was the highest form of respect. The later pages were different: sweeping, almost musical, as if the writer had been composing rather than recording. The techniques described in the manuscript were unlike anything Elias had encountered in his twenty-two years of searching for something that made sense of the fire.

The practice was simple: sit in the dark, breathe slowly, and look at the space between his thoughts the way a musician looks at the silence between notes. At first, nothing happened. Then, after what might have been ten minutes or ten hours, he noticed something. The darkness in front of his eyes was not empty. It was filled with colours that had no names, shapes that had no edges, a texture that was neither smooth nor rough but something that existed in the gap between those categories the way a chord exists in the gap between two notes.

He opened his eyes. The room was the same. The mattress on the floor was the same. The single window that looked out at the brick wall of the neighbouring building was the same. But Elias was different. He could feel the light inside him the way a swimmer feels the water: not as something separate but as something he was moving through, something that was moving through him.

The changes began slowly. He noticed things he had always known but never seen: the exact moment when the woman at the Cotton Club smiled with her mouth and not her eyes, the way the bass player's fingers trembled slightly before each solo, the pattern of cracks in the ceiling of his room that he had never looked at closely because he had been afraid that if he looked too closely he would see something he did not want to see.

Then the changes accelerated. Elias began to sense emotions the way other people sensed temperature. He could walk down a street in Harlem and feel the joy of a woman carrying groceries home to her children, the grief of a man sitting alone on a bench staring at a pigeon, the quiet determination of a nurse walking home from a twelve-hour shift, all of it washing over him like weather, and he understood, with a certainty that was not intellectual but visceral, that his mother had known this. He took the letter to Mr. Park's shop three days later and asked if the man had ever heard of a manuscript written in shimmering ink. Mr. Park's face did not change, but his hands did. They trembled slightly as he set down the coffee cup he had been holding, and Elias understood that his mother had been to this shop, and that Mr. Park had known her, and that the manuscript was not the first of its kind and would not be the last.

"There are seven," Mr. Park said quietly. "Not seven books. Seven people. Seven practitioners, across different cultures and centuries, who found their own version of the same practice. Your mother's version was written in a language that looked like Yoruba to anyone who did not know how to read it. The first was written in Sanskrit. The third in Arabic. The fifth in a dialect of English that sounds almost modern but isn't. They are connected, though not physically. The connection is in the practice itself. When all seven are being practiced simultaneously, in different parts of the world, by people who understand what they are doing, something happens. Something the manuscript calls the awakening."

"What happens?" Elias asked.

Mr. Park looked at him for a long time. "I don't know," he said. "I've never seen it happen. But your mother believed in it. And she was not a woman who believed in things without reason."

Elias began teaching. He started with Ma Johnson, who owned the club where he worked and who had taken him in when he first arrived in Harlem and had nowhere else to go. She was a large woman with a voice that could fill a room and a mind that could dissect one. She practiced for three days and then told him that she had felt something in her chest open up the way a flower opens, except that flowers don't usually start crying when they open, and she was crying, and she couldn't stop.

Then he taught Marcus Webb, a poet who wrote verses that made people in smoky rooms feel things they had spent their entire lives avoiding. Marcus practiced for a week and then read a poem at the club that made three people leave before he finished, not because they were uncomfortable but because they had felt something so intensely that staying would have meant breaking down in front of a room full of strangers.

Then Dorothy, a nurse from Mount Sinai Hospital who had spent the war years tending to soldiers who came home with bodies that were intact and minds that were not, and who had always been able to make people feel better just by holding their hands. Dorothy practiced for two days and then told Elias that she had felt the light in her hands for the first time, and that she wanted to try it on the patients at the hospital.

Elias said no. Not yet. The practice needed to be stronger. The network needed to be more complete. They had three of seven. They needed four more.

Senator Whitmore was hunting them. Elias knew this because he could feel the man's presence like a dark spot in the light, a concentration of fear and ambition and the kind of certainty that comes from believing that other people's consciousness is a resource to be extracted. Whitmore had been searching for the manuscripts for twenty years, ever since his own mother died in a fire that was not a fire but a consumption, the kind his mother had warned about. He believed that the light could be controlled, that it could be harnessed, that it could be used to make people think the thoughts that he wanted them to think. He was not entirely wrong. The light could be used for that. But it was not meant for that.

Elias stood in front of the mirror in his room and looked at his own eyes and saw the light in them, small and steady and growing, and thought of his mother, and thought of the seven manuscripts, and thought of the awakening that was coming whether he was ready for it or not.

He picked up the phone and called Ma Johnson.

"We need to move faster," he said. "Whitmore is getting closer. I can feel him."

"Then we find the other practitioners," Ma Johnson said. "We've been lucky so far, but luck isn't a strategy."

"I know," Elias said. And he did know. He knew it the way he knew the light was real: not because someone had told him but because he could feel it, warm and steady and growing, in the space between his thoughts, in the pause between one moment and the next, in the silence between the notes of a jazz song that was just beginning to play.
