I stood in the back of the room, wearing my best coat, listening to my father insult the very people who owed me their lives.

Then Dr. Pembroke stood up. He was a small, bent man now, but his voice was steady.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the Society," he said, "the man you are refusing to honour saved fifty-three lives in Whitechapel while your licensed physicians watched them die. You used what they tried to bury against them, and that is the greatest power there is. Do not let them make you feel small. Do not let them make you polite. The world does not change because good men wait their turn. It changes because stubborn men refuse to stay down."

I folded the letter and put it in my pocket. Then I walked out of the hall and into the London rain, and I did not cry because men like me do not cry. But I wanted to.

I wanted to cry for her. I wanted to cry for all of them—the fifty-three who lived and the fifteen who died, Dr. Pembroke above the gin shop, my father in his cold stone house, and myself, standing at the top of a mountain I had climbed with bare hands, wondering what was on the next peak.
