Borrowed Time
The note was written on the back of a community center flyer, in a handwriting that shook so badly the letters seemed to be falling off the page:
"Go see Sky. She has something to show you."
Tina read it three times. Then she read it a fourth time, folded it, and put it in her jacket pocket, where it rubbed against a lint ball and a crumpled gas bill.
Marge had been her distant cousin on her mother's side—Polish, stubborn, the kind of woman who could make a pot of soup that could feed an army and a sermon that could convert an atheist. Tina hadn't seen her in years. Marge had been doing volunteer work at the Detroit Community Center for thirty years, and Tina had been doing everything except that: working at a warehouse during the day, flipping burgers at a diner at night, and drinking alone in an apartment on East Jefferson that cost $350 a month and smelled like old paint and older decisions.
She went to the center on a Tuesday. The building was a converted church—brick, low, with stained glass windows that showed saints whose faces had been eaten by time and moisture. The community center occupied the ground floor; the upstairs was empty, just a space where someone used to gather on Sundays.
Sky was in the basement, which had been converted into an art studio. Walls covered in murals, half-finished canvases leaning against every available surface, the smell of spray paint hanging in the air like fog.
Tina stopped in the doorway.
The mural that covered the entire far wall was the kind of thing that made you stop breathing for a second. It showed a bird flying out of a window in an abandoned factory. The bird was rendered in such detail that Tina could count the feathers on its wings. The factory window was cracked, and through the crack, you could see a sliver of sky that looked so real Tina found herself looking up, as if the ceiling might open and reveal the actual sky above.
"It's good," Tina said. She didn't mean to sound so flat. Her voice was always flat these days. Alcohol does that to you.
Sky turned from the wall. She was tall—six feet maybe—with a lean, coiled body. Her hair was braided in tight lines, and her eyes were dark and assessing. She wore paint-stained jeans and a gray sweatshirt.
"You must be Tina."
"You know who I am?"
"Marge told me someone might come. Said you were... complicated."
Tina laughed, which was her defense mechanism. It came out dry. "Yeah. Complicated is one word for it."
"What's yours?"
"What's what?"
"Your name. I know it's Tina. But what does it stand for?"
"Marquez. Tina Marquez."
"I know. Marge talked about you. She said you used to draw."
Tina felt something shift in her chest. "Used to."
"When?"
"I don't know. A long time ago."
Sky leaned against a table and studied Tina for a moment. "What did you draw?"
"Nothing that matters."
"That's not an answer."
Tina looked at the mural. The bird was still flying. The factory window was still cracked. "I was good in high school. My senior year, one of my drawings got nominated for a state art competition. I didn't enter the finals. Didn't have the time."
"Time for what?"
"Life. Rent. Food. The usual."
Sky nodded slowly. "Yeah. The usual."

The arrangement was informal. Tina would use whatever contacts she had—cousins who worked in Midtown, a friend of a friend who knew a gallery owner in Corktown—to get Sky's work seen. Sky would keep drawing.
Tina's contacts were not many. Her cousin worked at a bank and had never looked at a piece of art in his life. Her friend of a friend was a bartender who knew a gallery owner who owned a gallery that sold tourist kitsch—postcards of the Renaissance and mugs with the Detroit skyline.
But Tina persisted. She called people. She sent emails. She went to three gallery openings in a month, which was more gallery openings than she'd attended in her entire life.
And something happened.
A small gallery in Midtown—a real one, with white walls and good lighting—agreed to look at Sky's work. The owner, a woman named Diane, came to the community center, walked through Sky's sketches, and said: "I'll give you a show. Six weeks from now. Twelve pieces."
Sky said nothing for a long time. Then she said: "Okay."
Tina felt a spark of something she hadn't felt in months. Hope. It felt ridiculous, standing in that paint-smelling basement with a girl she'd met a month ago, feeling hope about a gallery show. But it was there.
"Okay," Tina said. "We'll make it happen."

The two weeks before the show, Sky stopped using. Not the casual kind of stopping—she stopped. Cold turkey. Tina noticed because Sky was different: more tense, more focused, her eyes brighter and harder at the same time.
"I'm doing this for the show," Sky told her. "After that, I don't know."
"Don't know what?"
"What comes next."
Tina was drinking a beer that she'd smuggled into the community center in her purse. She took a long pull and set it down. "After anything, I don't know what comes next either. That's kind of how it is."
Sky looked at her. "You want to come to the opening?"
"If they let me in."
"They'll let you in. You're my... what are you? My agent? My mom? My sponsor?"
"I don't know. Maybe I'm just the person who convinced you to show your art to strangers."
"That's basically a sponsor."
They laughed. It was a good laugh. One of the few good ones Tina had in a long time.

The night before the show, Sky called in. Not to Tina—to someone else. Danny heard it; he was at the center, helping Sky set up. Danny called Tina.
"Tina, Sky's on the phone. She's... she's talking to someone. I don't know who. But she sounds—"
"High?"
"Yeah."
Tina was in her apartment, half a bottle of whiskey on the coffee table, the TV murmuring in the background. She said: "I'm coming."
She got to the center at 9 PM. Sky was in the studio, sitting on the floor with her back against the wall, her eyes unfocused. Danny was standing nearby, looking helpless.
Tina knelt beside Sky. "Sky. Sky, look at me."
Sky's eyes focused, slowly, like a camera lens trying to find its subject. "Tina."
"What happened?"
"Nothing. Everything. I don't know."
Tina put her hand on Sky's cheek. It was warm. Too warm. "Danny, get her some water."
Danny left. Tina waited. Sky's breathing was shallow.
"I'm sorry," Sky said. "I'm sorry, Tina. I told myself I wouldn't. I told myself—"
"Shh. It's okay."
"It's not okay. The show is tomorrow. Diane is expecting—"
"I know."
"I can't—I don't think I can—"
Tina didn't know what to say. So she said nothing. She sat on the floor beside Sky, in the paint-smelling studio, and held the girl's hand while the community center clock ticked toward tomorrow.

The morning of the show, Sky was not in her apartment. Tina called her phone—no answer. She called Danny—no answer. She called the community center—closed early for setup.
At 11 AM, Tina arrived at the gallery alone. Diane was there, setting up the last piece. She looked at Tina and said: "Where's the artist?"
"Sky isn't coming."
Diane's face closed. "She committed to this. Twelve pieces. Opening night."
"I know."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
Diane looked at the empty space on the wall where Sky's largest piece was supposed to go. Then she looked at Tina. "I'll keep the pieces. If she doesn't show up, I'm not paying. That's the agreement."
"She'll show up."
"She didn't show up for the opening. That's not showing up, Tina."
Tina left the gallery with Sky's paintings still there—twelve pieces of her life, her struggle, her hope, hanging on white walls that would never know her name. Diane said she'd keep them. Said she'd call Sky when the artist was ready.
Tina walked home through the cold Detroit morning. She stopped at a corner store and bought a bottle of whiskey. Not beer. Whiskey.
She drank it in her apartment, sitting on the floor the same way Sky had sat the night before, in the same posture of defeat.

Spring came and went. Tina still worked at the warehouse. Sky came out of rehab in May, thinner, quieter, but her eyes were clear.
They met in the community center hallway. Sky said: "I'm sorry, Tina."
Tina said: "I'm sorry too."
They didn't hug. They stood in the hallway, two women who had failed each other, and that was enough.
Tina started writing. Not art—words. On her phone, in the Notes app. She wrote about Marge, about Sky, about Detroit in winter, about the bird that flew out of the factory window and kept flying even though there was no sky to fly into.
One day in December 2020, the first snow fell. Tina was at the community center, watching Sky teach a group of children how to draw. Her phone buzzed. She opened Notes and wrote one line:
Today I saw it—a bird flying out of a factory window. I know it's a drawing. But I think maybe drawings are real too.
She locked her phone. The bird kept flying.
