THE GARDEN REBUILT
I.
The sea didn't so much take Arthur Pendelton's leg as give it back to him, folded and useless, in a hospital tent near Ypres. He was twenty-three. He was also, as the discharge papers coldly stated, "no longer of effective military service."
Four years ago, he had been a junior editor at The Times, responsible for typesetting the society pages. He liked the rhythm of setting type—letter by letter, word by word, building meaning from fragments. He liked the clean black margins of a printed page more than he liked the messy margins of his own life.
When he returned to London in 1919, the clean pages were all he had left.
He found a job at a small printing press in Stepney, setting headlines for a newspaper that mostly reported on unemployment and cholera and the slow, grinding misery of a city that had spent its young men on French mud. He lived in a room above a fish shop that smelled perpetually of vinegar and regret. He drank cheap gin. He slept badly.
The sea incident happened by accident—or rather, by a sequence of accidents that Arthur, in his drunken wisdom, would later refuse to call either. He had gone to a dockworker's pub in Wapping, where a man named O'Malley was buying rounds for everyone who could name a place they wanted to go. Arthur said "the edge of the map." O'Malley bought him another gin and told him about a skipper heading out to the Caribbean on a smuggler's ketch, looking for extra hands.
Arthur took the job. He told no one.
The ketch ran tobacco and spirits from Nassau to Essex. Arthur didn't care about the cargo. He cared about the sea, because the sea was the only place where he didn't have to pretend he was anything other than what he was: a broken machine with too many loose ends.
They sighted the island on a morning in October 1924. It was small—no more than three square miles—and it appeared out of the fog like a mistake, a smudge of green that wasn't on any chart O'Malley possessed. They dropped anchor in a sheltered cove and went ashore for fresh water.
That was when Arthur saw the wings.
They came out of the fog like the sails of ghost ships—vast, leathery, moving through the air with a deliberation that made Arthur stop breathing for a moment. There were three of them, each with a wingspan wider than O'Malley's ketch, and they circled the island's central hill in a pattern that looked deliberate, almost ceremonial.
O'Malley called them frigate birds and was immediately proven wrong when one of them landed in the surf and revealed itself to be, unmistakably, a creature that had no business existing in 1924.
II.
Arthur went back alone. He told O'Malley he was going for a row, and took the dinghy to the island's shoreline, and left his mark on the beach with a message in the sand: A.P. OCT 14 1924.
The island was a garden. That was the only word for it. Not wild—wild was the right word for places Arthur had walked through in France, places where shellfire had turned forests into splintered stumps and mud. This was a garden in the original sense: cultivated, tended, alive with a kind of ordered abundance that made Arthur's editor brain appreciate the typographic elegance of it all.
The creatures—Arthur would later learn there were at least twelve distinct species—were not wild either. They moved through the island with a purposefulness that bordered on the civilised. The flying ones (he called them "sails," after ships) had nesting colonies on the central hill. The ground-dwellers (he called them "runners," after a horse he'd owned as a boy) patrolled the island's perimeter in groups, like sentries. And in the water—God, in the water were creatures that made the great ships of the Royal Navy look like toys.
Arthur sat on the beach and watched a runner the size of a pony drink from a stream, and he felt something he hadn't felt in four years: a sensation that was not sadness, not fear, not exhaustion. It was the feeling of a typographer looking at a perfect page—of seeing, for the first time in a long time, that things could be in their right place.
He returned to London. He set type for The Times. He drank gin. He went back to the island on every available shore leave.
And one day, in November, he did something that changed everything. He brought a boy with him.
The boy was named Billy Murphy. He was nine years old, had been living in a Workhouse in Shoreditch, and had been caught stealing bread from Arthur's room above the fish shop. Arthur, who had once been a boy himself and had once understood the difference between stealing bread and being a thief, took pity on him. He brought Billy to the island on a Sunday, in a rowboat he'd purchased from O'Malley for three pounds and a promise.
Billy did not flinch when he saw the sails. He did not scream or hide or call Arthur a liar. He simply stared at the great leathery wings cutting through the fog and said, in a voice that was barely a whisper: "They're real."
Arthur looked down at the boy—who had the same hollow-cheeked, too-big clothes as every other child in Stepney—and saw, for the first time, that there were still people in the world who hadn't yet learned to disbelieve in the impossible.
"Yes," Arthur said. "They are."
III.
They built a life. Not a comfortable one—Arthur had three pounds, a rowboat, and the patience of a man who had spent four years learning that patience was the only thing that mattered. But they built it.
They built shelters from driftwood and sailcloth. Arthur fished; Billy gathered fruit from trees Arthur couldn't classify. Billy learned to identify the runners by their calls—the low click of the adults, the high squeak of the young. Arthur learned to read the weather by the behaviour of the sails, who always flew lower before a storm.
They were, by any conventional measure, invisible people living on an invisible island. But they were alive. Billy stopped having nightmares. Arthur stopped waking up reaching for a rifle that wasn't there.
News of the island reached London through a chain of events that Arthur could trace but never fully understand. O'Malley told a dockworker. The dockworker told a friend who worked at the Admiralty. The Admiralty, interested in any uncharted territory that might have strategic value, dispatched a survey vessel.
The vessel arrived in March 1925. Its captain was a man named Hargreaves, and he came with six armed men and a team of naturalists and a contract from a American consortium that wanted to turn the island into a "colonial attraction"—a place where Londoners could come and see "the wonders of the Empire's latest discovery."
Arthur stood on the beach with Billy and watched the ship drop anchor and Hargreaves step ashore with the confidence of a man who believed the world belonged to him and everyone in it.
"You can stay here," Arthur told Billy. "You can go back to London. Either choice is yours."
Billy looked at the sails circling above them, and at the runner drinking from the stream, and at Arthur—who was, by any objective measure, the strangest man Billy had ever met.
"I'm not going," Billy said.
IV.
Arthur sold everything he owned in London. The printing press, the rowboat he'd converted into a proper vessel, his father's pocket watch, the last of his war pension. He bought a parcel of land on the island—a small, flat stretch of coast that the Admiralty survey had mistakenly marked as unclaimable—and registered it under a name he'd chosen the night before: Pendelton Island.
The American consortium backed off when they discovered that "unclaimable" actually meant "owned by someone who doesn't speak their language and doesn't care about their money." Hargreaves returned to London with a report that the island was "of limited scientific value" and "unsuitable for commercial development." No one believed him, but no one cared enough to investigate.
Arthur and Billy lived on the island for the rest of their lives. Arthur never returned to London. Billy grew up to be a man who knew the names of every creature on the island and could read the weather by watching birds. He never learned to read or write—but he didn't need to. He had Arthur, and the island, and a life that was, by any measure that mattered, enough.
In his final years, Arthur sat on the beach most mornings, watching the sails come in from the sea to roost in the central hill. Billy would sit beside him, and sometimes they would talk, and sometimes they wouldn't.
"You know," Arthur said one morning in 1952, when he was eighty-seven and Billy was seventy-one and the island was the only world either of them had ever known, "I used to think the world was broken. After the war, I thought nothing good could ever grow in the ground again."
Billy looked at him. The sails were overhead, their wings catching the morning light.
"But it's not broken," Arthur said. "It's just waiting for someone to tend it."
Billy nodded. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to. The sails were making the sound—a low, rhythmic hum, like a lullaby sung by something old and patient and kind—and that was enough.
