What Jimmy Knew
The rink opened at six. Jimmy was there at five forty-five. He had the key, the keys actually—there were three of them on a ring, and he carried them everywhere, because the lock on the side door stuck if you didn't jiggle it just right, and nobody else knew how to do that.
He unlocked the door and went inside. The building smelled like the usual things: resin, frozen water, the particular damp smell that concrete develops when it has been wet for thirty years. He turned on the overhead lights. They flickered and then came on, one by one, casting the rink in a yellow glow that looked like old film.
He started his work. Scraping the boards. Checking the Zamboni. Wiping down the concession counter even though nobody bought anything at six in the morning.
At six o'clock, the woman arrived.
She came through the front door, not the side door where everyone else entered. She wore an old track suit that had once been navy and was now gray. Her skates were thrift-store quality, the kind with plastic shells and blades that had been sharpened more times than the metal should have allowed. She paid in cash—five dollars, exact change—and sat on the third bench from the front.
Jimmy went back to the Zamboni bay and pretended not to watch. He watched anyway.
She skated alone. She skated in a way that made Jimmy, who had spent nineteen years watching things move, stop what he was doing and stare.
She didn't do jumps. She didn't do spins or lifts or anything that would have made sense in a competition. She moved through the rink in patterns that looked almost improvised but weren't. Every turn was precise. Every glide was clean. She had no wasted motion. There was a quality to her skating that Jimmy could not name but recognized immediately: this was someone who had spent a long time being the best at something and had not forgotten how to do it, even if everything else in her life had gone wrong.
She skated for an hour and left.
He noticed she came every day. Same time. Same clothes. Same five dollars. Some mornings she skated for thirty minutes. Some mornings for two hours. She never spoke to him. She never skated with anyone else.
One morning, the Zamboni broke down. It was the carburetor again, and the repair guy—some kid from the neighborhood named Ray who knew enough to be dangerous—was struggling with it.
The woman watched from the edge of the ice for a minute. Then she stepped over the boards, walked over to the Zamboni, and said, "You're tightening the wrong bolt."
Ray stopped. "Excuse me?"
She pointed. "That one. You're tightening it clockwise. It needs to go counterclockwise."
Ray looked at her. He looked at the bolt. He tried it her way. The Zamboni started.
"Thanks," he said.
She nodded and walked back to the ice.
Jimmy introduced himself a few days later. He was sweeping near her bench when she sat down to rest, and he said, "I'm Jimmy."
She looked at him. She had a face that was almost pretty, but the kind of pretty that comes from intensity rather than youth. Her eyes were dark and tired. Her hair was pulled back so tightly that it made her face look sharp.
"Anya," she said. "Anastasia Petrova."
"What kind of skating is that, Mrs. Petrova?"
She looked at him the way someone looks at a doctor they don't want to tell the truth to. "Old skating."
"What does that mean?"
"It means it doesn't exist anymore."
He didn't press. He had learned, at nineteen, not to press. The world was full of people who wanted to press, and it was rarely worth it.
Instead, he left the heater on in the break room on cold mornings. He left a chair outside the rink when she came early. He didn't ask questions.
One morning, she didn't come. Then another. Then three days.
On the fourth morning, Jimmy went to the address she had given when she paid—14th Street, third floor, a walk-up that smelled like cabbage and stale smoke. He knocked. Nobody answered. He knocked again. Then he heard something inside: a cough, weak and wet.
He pushed the door open. It was unlocked.
She was on a mattress on the floor. A TV the size of a toaster was on beside her, playing a game show at low volume. She looked worse than he had expected. Thinner. Yellow. Her hands shook when she reached for the glass of water on the floor.
"I'm not the police," he said.
"I know."
"Then why are you hiding?"
She closed her eyes. "Because some things are easier when you're not looking at them."
He brought her back to the rink. He didn't know why he did it. He just did it. He helped her up, found a cab, paid the driver with money he hoped he'd have enough of to cover.
She skated the next morning. It was not good. She wobbled on her edges. She fell once—softly, controlled, the way someone falls when they still know how to protect themselves even when their body doesn't want to.
She got up and skated again.
A week later, she asked him to help her set up the VCR in the break room. It was an old Sony, black and white, with a tape deck that ate tapes if you didn't push them in straight.
Jimmy figured it out. He always figured things out. He had learned to repair the Zamboni by watching repair videos at the library. He could fix anything mechanical. This was not mechanical. This was wires and knobs and a screen the size of a postcard.
But he got it to work.
The tape was labeled in Cyrillic: 1976. Moscow. He didn't know what the words meant, but he pushed play.
A young woman appeared on the screen. She was maybe seventeen. She wore a red dress and skated on ice that was smoother and colder and more perfect than anything in this Bronx rink. She moved with a speed and precision that made Jimmy forget to watch her face and focus on her feet instead. Every step was exact. Every turn was clean. She was, he thought, the best thing he had ever seen.
Anya watched herself. She didn't speak. She didn't cry. She just watched, with the steady, unblinking attention of someone who has not seen herself in this form in twenty years.
Jimmy watched Anya watching herself.
"That was a long time ago," he said.
"Twelve years," she said. "The day before, my daughter was born. The day after, I was on a plane to Moscow for competition. I didn't get to see her learn to walk."
Jimmy didn't know what to say. So he said nothing.
They watched the tape three more times over the next week. Anya never said anything about her daughter. Jimmy never asked.
One morning, Anya came to the rink and skated a full program. She was forty-two, and her body was not what it had been, but the technique remained—the memory in the muscles, the geometry of motion that no amount of time or vodka could erase. She did not fall. She finished the program and sat down on the edge of the ice and took off her skates.
"That's it," she said.
Jimmy handed her a towel. "Yeah."
They walked out together. The door closed behind them. The rink was empty and cold and waiting for the next morning.
