The Last Ice Palace
The piano was out of tune, but Gene played it anyway. She played it in a Long Island salon where the champagne was bootleg and the women wore dresses that stopped mid-thigh, and she played it in a way that made the man in the corner stop talking and pick up his glass and hold it very still, as if the music might stop if he moved.
When she finished, nobody clapped. They never clapped at these things. They waited until the music had faded from the room, and then they returned to their conversations as if nothing had happened.
From the doorway, a young man watched her pack her hands into her coat pockets. He was tall, lean, with dark skin and the long fingers of a street player. He wore a mechanic's coveralls and a cap pulled low, as if he were trying to disappear.
"You're Genevieve Delaney," he said.
Gene looked up. "I am now."
"Not according to the Herald. You're the Ice Queen."
"I was. Before that stopped being funny."
He sat down on the piano bench without asking. "They say you threw a match."
"They say a lot of things. Did they tell you why?"
"No."
She laughed. It was not a kind laugh. "They didn't have to. The Herald said enough. The rest is just details, and details aren't interesting."
He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I can skate."
She looked at him properly. He had the face of someone she might have seen a hundred times and never noticed: Italian, working-class, trying to be invisible. But his feet were long, his ankles looked strong, and his posture—the way he held himself even while sitting—told her something she hadn't heard in years.
"Can you skate?" she repeated.
"Watch me tomorrow. At six. The creek behind the garage."
She should have said no. She had spent six months making sure nobody knew who she was. She had changed her name, worn plain clothes, sung in rooms where nobody looked at her. She had built a life on invisibility.
But she was thirty years old, and the last time she had been called the Ice Queen was in a newspaper that was now used to wrap fish in East Harlem.
"Six is early," she said.
"It's freezing," he said. "That's the point."
His name was Leonard. Everyone called him Leon. He worked at a garage on 116th Street and spent every morning before dawn skating on a frozen creek behind the building. He had no coach, no formal training, and a pair of skates that someone had donated to the local YMCA. When he skated, however, he moved like someone who had been given something the world had no language for.
Gene saw him skate once and knew, with the certainty of someone who had spent her life reading bodies in motion, that she had found something worth doing.
She didn't tell him why. She didn't say: you move the way I used to move, except better, because you haven't been broken yet. She didn't say: I need to believe that someone can skate for the right reason, because I've forgotten what that reason is.
She said, "Give me three months."
And he said, "Okay."
She began training him at 5:30 in the morning, when the Washington Square Rink was cold enough to freeze through three sweaters and the heating had been turned off for the winter. She taught him everything she knew: how to fall without breaking anything, how to land a jump by bending at the knee and trusting the ice, how to make the blade sing instead of scrape.
He learned fast. He learned faster than she had, at his age, because he had no fear. Fear was what had destroyed her. Not the scandal, not the patron, not the Herald. Fear was what had made her skate too perfectly, too carefully, and then too desperately when the fear became too much to carry.
In February, Sister Agnes came to see her. The nun was small, iron-willed, and wore her habit like armor.
"There's a charity event," she said. "For the boys who came back from the war and can't sleep without dreaming of the trenches. The WPA is putting on an ice ballet. They need a program. Something about healing. Something that makes people cry without knowing why."
Gene laughed. "Sister, I haven't skated in two years."
"I know," the nun said. "That's why you're the one. You know what it means to lose something you can't get back."
The program took shape in the way these things always do: not through planning but through accident and necessity. Leon choreographed the movements instinctively; Gene arranged them into something that looked like a story. They recruited four other skaters from the YMCA and the local high school—children of immigrants, mostly, kids who had never been to a formal ball and didn't know what shoes were supposed to look like.
They rehearsed in a barn that had been converted into an ice rink by a man named O'Malley who believed in second chances and charged five dollars a night. The music came from a gramophone that skipped on the third revolution. The ice was rough. Leon's skates were held together with wire.
But when they skated together, something happened. Something that had nothing to do with technique or perfection or the memory of a gold medal. They skated like people who had been given a brief, luminous chance to mean something.
The performance was in April, at the Grand Ballroom. The audience was full of men in uniforms and women in hats and boys who flinched when the music swelled too loudly. They sat in silence as Gene and Leon took the ice.
They did not skate a competition program. They skated a story: a woman alone on ice, a young man reaching for her, hands that almost touched, a fall, a rise, a final pose in which the woman stood alone and the young man skated away from her into the light.
When they finished, the silence lasted longer than it had at the salon. Then the room erupted. Men in uniforms stood up. Women cried without apology. The applause did not stop for a full minute.
Afterward, in the empty ballroom, Leon found Gene sitting on the edge of the ice with her skates in her hands.
"You were in it too," he said.
She smiled. It was a small, tired smile, the kind of smile that comes at the end of something long and difficult and worth having done.
"Go home, Leon," she said.
She walked out into the April rain alone. The rain felt good. It felt like the world was washing itself clean. She did not look back.
