The bubble pipeline stretched across the New Mexico desert like a ribbon of glass laid by a god with too much time and too much money. She graduated at nineteen, top of her class, with a degree in civil engineering and a reputation for being brilliant, difficult, and single-minded.
She spent the next decade working on water projects across the American Southwest. She designed irrigation systems for Native American reservations, built dams for ranchers, and solved problems that older, more celebrated engineers had declared impossible. She was also, by most accounts, a terrible conversationalist and a worse dinner guest.
"It's not rudeness," she told a colleague once. "It's efficiency. Every minute I spend talking about the weather is a minute I don't spend calculating flow rates."
Her bubble pipeline was her magnum opus. Vanderbilt's smile faded. "Miss Vasquez, you are a engineer. Build your bubbles. Leave the world to those who understand it."
"I am building my bubbles," Eleanor said. "And the world is going to drink from them."
She turned and walked out of the office, and Clara followed her, and they took the elevator down forty-three flights, and when they reached the street, Eleanor looked up at the building and she knew, with the certainty of someone who has calculated the structural integrity of a bubble and found it sound, that her pipeline would work.
It worked. The first full-scale bubble launched in the spring of 1917, and the water from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains flowed one hundred and forty miles across the desert, delivering seven hundred thousand gallons of fresh water to towns that had been dry for twelve years.
Vanderbilt's program ended the following year, when Eleanor's documents were published in every major newspaper in the country and the public outrage forced the government to investigate. Vanderbilt died in 1923, his reputation in tatters, his company dissolved.
Eleanor Vasquez never married again. She continued building water projects until she was seventy years old, and then she built more, and more, and more. When she died in 1954, at the age of eighty-one, she was buried in a cemetery in Santa Fe beside a headstone that read simply: *She made the water flow.*
In the desert outside Santa Fe, the bubble pipeline still works. The polymer is old now, cracked and brittle in places, but the water still flows.
