The fog came in on the third night at sea, thick as wool and cold as a grave. Arthur Windsor stood at the rail of HMS Dawn, his breath pluming in the grey air, and watched the Pacific swallow the horizon whole. One hundred and twenty children behind him—no more, no less. The count had been taken twice daily since they left Plymouth.

"Captain's orders," said a voice behind him. Augustus Pemberton, fourteen years old, wearing his father's admiral coat with the gold braids still intact. He stood with his hands clasped behind his back, the posture of a man twice his age. "We hold course. No deviation."

Arthur did not turn. "The fog is thickening, Augustus. We should reduce sail."

"The Captain's orders," Augustus repeated, and there was something in his voice—something hard and thin, like a blade wrapped in silk—that made Arthur turn after all.

Augustus was smiling. It was not a kind smile.

They had left England in the autumn of 1888, three months after the Grey Death had taken every adult in the kingdom. Arthur remembered the last day vividly: his father, a captain in the Royal Navy, sitting in the study with a cup of tea that had gone cold. His mother in the garden, kneeling among the roses, her hand outstretched as if reaching for something just beyond her fingers. They had not suffered. The doctor—God rest his soul—had called it merciful. But mercy was a word for the living, and there were no living adults left to speak it.

Arthur had been twelve when it happened. Now he was twelve and three-quarters, though he felt older. Much older. The Crown had chosen him to lead the Dawn on the Dusk Migration—not because he was the oldest, but because he was the son of a captain and a lady, because he had the right blood and the right name and the right face for the photographs that would be taken of him. The photographs mattered. The photographs would be remembered.

Behind him, the Dawn cut through the fog. She was a steam ironclad, the pride of the Royal Navy, her black hull gleaming under the weak afternoon sun. Her decks were crowded with children—some playing cards, some sleeping in hammocks strung between the masts, some standing at the rail with the same haunted look Arthur saw in the mirror each morning. They were all the same look. The look of children who had buried their parents and were now sailing toward an unknown coast to build a new world from the bones of the old.

"Mr. Windsor," a voice said. Eleanor Crawford, eleven years old, the ship's assistant physician. She was small and dark-haired, with eyes that saw too much. Her father had been a London physician, and she had learned much from him before the Grey Death took him too. "I should speak with you."

Arthur turned. "Here? Now?"

"Here and now," she said, and her voice was quiet but firm. "It is about the sleeping."

Arthur felt a coldness spread through him that had nothing to do with the fog. "How many?"

"Seven in the past three days. They simply close their eyes and do not open them again. I have examined each one. There is no fever, no wound, no sign of disease. They are simply... asleep. And I do not believe they will wake."

Arthur looked at the fog. It was so thick he could barely see the bow of the ship. "How many more?"

Eleanor hesitated. "I do not know, Mr. Windsor. But I think it is spreading."

That night, Arthur could not sleep. The cabin was small and damp, the walls sweating condensation that dripped onto the floor in a steady rhythm. He lay on his narrow bunk and listened to the ship: the creak of timber, the hiss of steam, the distant murmur of voices from the deck above. And beneath all of it, a sound he had learned to dread—the soft, regular breathing of the children who had fallen asleep and would not wake.

He got up and dressed quietly. The corridor was dark, lit only by the flickering oil lamps that cast long, wavering shadows on the walls. He climbed the stairs to the deck.

The fog had deepened. The ship's lanterns cast weak yellow circles that barely penetrated the grey. And in those circles, Arthur saw them.

Figures.

Standing at the rail. Sitting on the deck. Leaning against the masts. Adults. Men in tailcoats and bonnets, women in long dresses, all of them translucent and grey, all of them watching the children with expressions Arthur could not read.

He froze. His breath caught in his throat.

One of the figures turned toward him. A woman—his mother, he knew it was his mother, though her face was blurred by the fog. She raised a hand and waved.

"Mother," Arthur whispered.

The figure dissolved into mist.

Arthur blinked. When his vision cleared, the deck was empty. No figures. No children. Just fog and darkness and the sound of the sea.

He stood there for a long time, shivering, until the cold drove him back below.

On the fifth day, the storm came.

It rose from the east like a wall of black water, towering above the Dawn and swallowing the sky. The waves hit the ironclad with the force of cannon fire. The ship groaned and pitched. Children screamed. The rigging snapped like whip cracks.

Arthur ran to the deck. Augustus was already there, shouting orders in a voice that cracked with panic. "Secure the cargo! Secure everything!"

But the storm did not care about cargo. It tore through the Dawn with the fury of something ancient and indifferent. A wave the size of a house lifted the ship and threw it sideways. Arthur flew over the rail—he felt the wind tear at his coat, felt the cold salt spray fill his mouth, felt the world spin—and then he was in the sea.

Cold. So cold it burned. The water closed over his head and he flailed, gasping, his lungs burning. Something grabbed his arm and hauled him up. He broke the surface coughing and saw Eleanor's face above him, her dark hair plastered to her skull, her eyes wide with terror and determination.

"Grab the rope!" she shouted.

Arthur reached up. His fingers closed around the thick hemp line. Eleanor and two other children hauled him onto a lifeboat that had been tossed onto the deck by the storm. He lay on the wet wood, gasping, and looked up at the sky.

The storm was still raging. Lightning split the clouds. Thunder shook the ship. And through the flashes of light, Arthur saw them again—the figures. Dozens of them, standing on the deck, watching the storm with expressions of terrible calm.

His mother stood at the bow. She was looking at him. She was smiling.

"Mother!" Arthur screamed. But the wind stole his voice.

The Dawn listed sharply. The masts groaned. And then, with a sound like the earth splitting open, the ship began to sink.

They made it to shore on the seventh day. Arthur, Eleanor, and forty-three others—forty-three of the original one hundred and twenty. The Dawn was gone, swallowed by the Pacific, taking with her Augustus Pemberton and the rest.

Arthur stood on the beach and looked inland. Through the trees, he could see structures—towers and spires and arches, built in a style that was both magnificent and wrong. They looked like castles, but twisted, as if someone had taken a Gothic cathedral and stretched it until it broke.

A castle of sweets. Arthur knew what it was. The children had built it before they left England—a playground of impossible scale, with towers four thousand stories high, roller coasters that spiraled through the clouds, slides that plunged into oceans of colored rubber balls. It had been magnificent. It had been beautiful.

And now, looking at it through the fog, it looked like something else entirely.

It looked like a tomb.

"Mr. Windsor," Eleanor said. She was standing beside him, her arm around a shivering child who had not spoken since the storm. "What do we do now?"

Arthur looked at the castle. He looked at the forty-three children huddled on the beach, their faces pale and hollow. He looked at the fog, which was already closing in, swallowing the world grey.

"We go in," he said.

And they did.

They walked through the gates of the sugar castle, into corridors of dark wood and shadow. The walls were lined with mirrors, and in each mirror Arthur saw a child—pale, wide-eyed, trembling. Children who had sailed across an ocean and lost three-quarters of their number to fog and storm and the slow, silent creeping of sleep.

At the end of the corridor, they found the others.

They were sitting in a great hall, perhaps two hundred of them, dressed in the finest Victorian clothing—velvet coats, silk dresses, lace collars and jeweled pins. Their faces were beautiful and perfectly made up. Their eyes were empty.

"Welcome," said a girl who looked about thirteen, wearing a crown of sugar glass. "We have been waiting for you."

Arthur looked at Eleanor. Eleanor looked at Arthur.

Behind the girl in the crown, through a window, Arthur could see the fog. It was rising. It was coming closer. It was always coming closer.

And he understood, with a clarity that chilled him to the bone, that the migration was not a beginning.

It was an ending.
