He looked at her. His face was bruised and broken. But his eyes—his eyes were the same as the day she had met him in Harlem: bright, stubborn, impossible.

"Because I was born on one leg shorter than the other," he said. "And the world has been counting me short ever since. I just wanted one person—just one—to see me standing."

Eleanor cried. She didn't tell him she was leaving for Boston. She didn't tell him her father had arranged a marriage with a man named Charles who had a real job and real money and legs that worked.

Nathan found out three days after the fight. He went back to the gym the next morning and hit the heavy bag until his hands bled and his ribs screamed and Old Mike told him to stop.

He didn't stop.

He would never stop.
