Rust and Petals
The sign said LAST HOPE VETERINARY in letters that had originally been gold and were now mostly rust. Emily Ross had painted it three years ago, when she first leased the building, and she meant to repaint it again but something always came up. The animal hospital across town had neon signs and a waiting room with leather chairs and a receptionist who answered the phone with "How may I make your day wonderful?" Last Hope had a creaky floor, a vending machine that ate dollars, and Emily, who answered the phone with "Veterinary clinic."
It was not glamorous. It was honest.
The cat on the table was a senior tabby with kidney failure. Mr. Henderson brought him in on a Tuesday. His name was Mitten and he was twelve years old and he had been Mr. Henderson's cat for eleven of those years, which is a long time for a cat and a very long time for a man who works the night shift at a warehouse and comes home to an apartment that is too quiet.
"The vet said there's nothing more you can do," Mr. Henderson said. He was a big man, wide and solid like one of the old factory buildings that lined the streets around here. His hands were rough. He was holding Mitten's carrier like it was something made of glass.
"There are options," Emily said. "Prescription diet. Subcutaneous fluids. They'd buy him time, maybe six months, maybe a year."
"I can't afford—"
"The treatments?"
"My time. I work nights. If I take him to the clinic every day for fluids, I lose my shift. If I lose my shift, I can't afford the prescription diet anyway."
She looked at the cat. Mitten was sitting in the carrier looking at her with the particular judgmental expression that cats reserve for people who are trying to help them.
"Tell you what," she said. "I'll show you how to do the fluids at home. It takes ten minutes. You can do it after your shift, before you go to sleep."
He looked at her. "You'd do that?"
"I'm a veterinarian. Doing that is what I do."
She showed him. He was a fast learner, which surprised her—big men with rough hands are often gentle when they think no one is watching.
Matt Hutchisson moved into the apartment above the clinic on a Wednesday. She heard the moving truck at seven in the morning, which was early even for Cleveland. She was already awake—she rarely slept past six—and she was making coffee in the kitchen when she heard the truck back into the alley behind the building and a man get out and start carrying things upstairs.
She watched from the kitchen window. He was a big man, big in a different way from Mr. Henderson—taller, leaner, with the kind of physical presence that takes up space even when he is trying not to. He carried one box at a time, carefully, setting each one down with a care that suggested the contents were important. He did this four times. Then he stood in the alley for a moment, looking up at the sky, and then he went inside.
She did not meet him that day. Or the next. Or the day after that.
She met him on the fourth day because a dog needed treatment and the dog belonged to him and there was no other way around it.
The dog was a mixed breed—part shepherd, part something else, hard to tell from the alley where he had been found. He was about three years old, underweight, with a broken front paw that had been set poorly and was healing at the wrong angle. Matt carried him into the clinic at five in the evening, holding the dog against his chest like it was something he was afraid would break if he let go.
"I found him in the alley behind the old steel plant," he said. He had a voice like gravel—low and rough and not used to forming words. "He was under a truck. Paw was bent wrong."
"How long has he been like that?"
"Two or three days."
"Did you try to take him to another clinic?"
"No."
"Why bring him to me?"
He looked at her. His eyes were gray—gray in the way that a Cleveland sky is gray, not dramatically, just consistently. "Because you're the only vet in this neighborhood who doesn't close at five."
She examined the dog. The paw would need to be broken and reset. It would be painful for the animal. It would cost money that Matt clearly did not have.
"It'll cost about two hundred dollars," she said.
"I don't have two hundred."
"I know."
"Can you—?"
"No. I'm not going to do surgery for free. I have rent to pay. I have loans. I have a cat with kidney disease who needs medication that costs more than your monthly grocery budget."
He was quiet. He set the dog down gently on the examination table. The dog leaned against his leg.
"Can I pay you in work?" he said.
"What work?"
"Whatever you need fixed. The clinic—your floors are creaky. The front door doesn't latch. The vending machine eats people's money. I can fix things."
She looked at him. "You're a handyman?"
"I was a construction worker. Before the accident."
"What accident?"
He looked at his right hand. His index finger was missing—the tip, at least. "Site collapse. Three years ago. I was the only one who walked away."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. The dog?"
She sighed. "I'll do it for two hundred. But you owe me. If you fix things around here, you pay me in labor at twenty an hour. Deal?"
"Deal."
The dog's paw healed wrong. Not because of her—she set it as well as she could—but because the dog had been without care for too long and bone damage from that kind of neglect does not respond to treatment the way fresh damage does. Matt understood. He did not argue. He did not ask for a refund. He just picked up the dog and carried him home and came back the next day and fixed the vending machine.
It ate people's money reliably. Matt fixed it by opening the panel on the back and adjusting a spring that had come loose. Ten minutes.
"You're good at that," she said.
"I'm good at fixing things," he said. "That's all I'm good at."
"You fixed your paw, didn't you?"
He looked at her. "What?"
"Your finger. You still have most of it. You fixed it."
He was quiet for a moment. "Yeah. I guess I did."
He started coming to the clinic regularly. Not to see her—never to see her specifically—but to fix things. The front door latch, which had been sticking for months. The fluorescent light in the waiting room, which flickered at irregular intervals and gave everyone who sat there a headache. The radiator in the corner, which hissed and clanked but never produced much heat.
He never stayed long. Ten minutes. Twenty at most. Fix what was broken. Leave.
But sometimes—sometimes—he would stay longer. He would stand in the doorway of her office while she worked on a patient and watch her hands. She had steady hands. Steady and precise. She could suture a wound the width of a pencil lead without shaking.
"You have good hands," he said one evening. She was suturing a cut on a beagle's ear, and he was standing in the doorway with his arms crossed.
"Thank you," she said. "You have bad hands."
He looked at his right hand. The missing finger tip. The scar that ran from his knuckle to his wrist, pale and jagged. "Yeah. I do."
"But you fix things."
"Sometimes."
One evening in October, it rained for fourteen hours straight. The kind of Cleveland rain that makes you question every life decision that led you to being stuck inside on a Saturday night. Matt came down to the clinic at seven because the apartment above was leaking—roof damage from the afternoon storm—and he could not work up there.
"I'll sleep on the couch in the waiting room," he said. "Unless that's a problem."
"It's a veterinary clinic. Sleeping here is the least of the problems."
He slept on the couch. She worked late, treating a cat with urinary blockage, and he slept through it—the deep, exhausted sleep of someone who has been awake for fourteen hours and whose body finally decided it was done.
At midnight, she finished with the cat and went into the waiting room to get her coat. He was awake, sitting on the couch, looking at her.
"Can't sleep?" she said.
"Used to waking up at odd hours," he said. "Site accidents. Flashbacks. Whatever you call them."
"PTSD?"
"Maybe. I haven't been to a doctor about it."
"Why not?"
"Because doctors don't fix structural damage. And that's what this is. Structural."
She sat down on the chair across from him. The clinic was quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator that kept the vaccines cold and the occasional sound of rain on the roof.
"Do you want me to fix it?" he said.
"I'm not a handyman."
"I know."
She was quiet for a long time. Then: "Why did you come here? To Cleveland. This isn't your city. You don't talk like a Cleveland guy."
"I'm from Pittsburgh."
"Pittsburgh's not that far from Cleveland."
"No. It's not." He paused. "I came here because the work was available. Construction's been dead since the plant closed. There's a firm—Brakefield Architecture—they hired me to do restoration work on some old buildings downtown. I figured Cleveland was as good as anywhere."
"Brakefield Architecture? Julian Brakefield's firm?"
"That's the one."
Julian Brakefield was a知名建筑师—Emily had seen his name in architectural magazines. Young, brilliant, controversial. He had designed the new museum on the Flats and the renovation of the old train station. And now he was her upstairs neighbor, and Matt Hutchisson worked for him.
"Your boss is Julian Brakefield?"
"Yeah. You know him?"
"I've seen his work."
He smiled. It was the first time she had seen him smile and it changed his face in a way she had not expected—made him look younger, less damaged, more like a person and less like a collection of scars.
"You think his work is good?"
"I think it's ambitious."
"Same thing?"
"Depends who you ask."
He was quiet. The rain continued. The refrigerator hummed.
"I used to dream about the collapse," he said. "Not every night. But enough. In the dream, I'm standing in the building and I can hear it groaning—steel bending, concrete cracking—and I know it's going to fall and I can't get anyone out."
"Did you lose someone?"
"My foreman. His name was Ray. He had six kids. He was standing next to me when the roof came down. I walked away. He didn't."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I'm the one who's sorry. I walked away."
She did not know what to say. So she said nothing.
He stood up. "I should go upstairs. The leak probably got worse."
"Matt."
He paused at the door.
"Thank you," she said. "For fixing the vending machine. And the door. And everything else."
He looked at her. "You don't have to thank me. I'm paying you in labor."
"I know."
He went upstairs. She locked the clinic and went home to her small apartment in the back of the building and tried to sleep and could not.
Her mother called on Sunday. As usual.
"Emily, how are you?"
"Fine, Mom."
"Are you eating?"
"Yes."
"Are you sleeping?"
"Enough."
"Your cousin Karen had a baby. A girl. She named her Caroline—after you, she said, because she knows you're probably never going to get married."
"Mom—"
"And I saw in the paper that the old mill on West 65th is going to be demolished. I always liked that building. It had character."
"Mom."
"I just want to talk to you, Emily. Is that so much to ask?"
"No. It's not. It's just— I'm tired, Mom. I'm tired and I have a cat who needs medication and a clinic that needs repairs and a man upstairs who fixes things and I just want to sit down and not talk for five minutes."
Silence. Then, quietly: "I just want you to be happy."
"I know. That's the problem."
She hung up. She sat on the floor of her apartment—kitchen floor, linoleum cold beneath her—and she did not cry. She just sat there and thought about Matt upstairs, fixing whatever was broken, and her cat at home, sleeping in his bed, and Mitten the cat who had died on Mr. Henderson's porch because there was not enough money in the world to buy time.
Life in Cleveland was not dramatic. It did not have plot twists or dramatic confrontations or sweeping romantic gestures. It had rent, and loans, and cats dying, and men with missing fingers who fixed vending machines. It had a mother who loved you in the only way she knew how—which was to control you. It had a clinic called Last Hope that was rarely anything of the sort but tried to be anyway.
On a Thursday in November, she stood at the window of her office and watched Matt working in the alley. He was repairing the fence that ran along the side of the building—the one that had been damaged in the storm. He was standing on a ladder, hammering nails into the wood, his movements economical and precise. One-handed, mostly. The missing finger was not visible, but she could tell he was favoring his right hand.
She thought about going downstairs. She thought about making coffee and offering him a cup. She thought about all the things she could say—thank you for fixing the fence, you're very good at this, do you want to come up and warm up by the radiator—and none of them felt right. None of them felt like enough.
Instead, she went back to her desk and opened the chart of the next patient—a dog with an ear infection, nothing serious—and began to write.
Matt finished the fence at five. He locked his apartment door and walked down the stairs and through the clinic and out the front door. He paused in the doorway and looked at her.
"See you around," he said.
"See you around," she said.
He walked away down the street, into the Cleveland evening, into the rust and the rain and the sky the color of a healing bruise. She watched him go. She did not call after him. She did not run downstairs and catch up with him and say the thing that was sitting in her chest like a stone.
She just watched him go.
And the next morning, she did not answer her mother's phone.
