The Orbital
The sky over Manhattan was the colour of ash on September 12, 2001.
I was on the forty-seventh floor of the Empire State Building, in a laboratory that studied quantum field theory. I was looking out the window when I saw the towers fall. Not the first one—that had happened hours ago. I was watching the second tower, still standing, still burning, still defiantly upright in a city that had just learned the word undefeatable did not exist.
And then it fell.
I do not need to describe it. You know what it looked like. A building the height of a god brought down by two planes and the certainty of evil. Dust rose from the ground like a wave. Cars stopped. People ran. And I stood in a laboratory, surrounded by equations and whiteboards and the smell of dry-erase markers, and I felt something inside me crack.
Not my heart. My certainties.
Before 9/11, I believed in clean lines. In right and wrong. In the idea that science was a force for good. After 9/11, I believed in nothing except the dust—the grey, choking, omnipresent dust that coated every surface in New York and every thought in my mind.
