The Abandoned Shore

The machine was made of scrap. That was the first thing you noticed about it. The second thing was that Ray O'Brien took it seriously.
It sat in the corner of the abandoned Ford plant, a tangle of copper wire and copper pipe and pieces of television sets from the 1970s and what looked like an old car alternator bolted to a sheet of plywood. Ray had been building it for approximately eleven months. He added to it every night after his shift as night watchman, which was to say for about two hours before he went home to his trailer and slept.
Daryl found him there on a night in November because the trailer park had frozen over and Daryl needed somewhere warm and the plant was the nearest structure that wasn't a church and the churches had stopped allowing strangers to sleep in their basements sometime during the Reagan administration.
He slipped through a broken window on the ground floor and found the machine because it was the only thing in the building that was plugged in. A single extension cord ran from a wall outlet to the plywood base, and the base was humming—a low vibration that Daryl felt in his teeth more than he heard with his ears.
Ray was sitting beside it, his face illuminated by the green glow of a vacuum tube that had no business working but was working. He was old. Not elderly-old, but old-old. The kind of old that came from spending too many years doing things alone.
"Who are you?" Daryl said.
Ray didn't look up. "I'm the night watchman."
"What's that thing?"
"The launcher."
Daryl looked at it more carefully. It was made of—well, it was made of everything. TV tunners. Car batteries. A antenna from a 1960s Chevrolet. A tangle of wire that looked like a bird had built a nest inside a circuit board.
"The launcher," Daryl repeated.
"For signals."
"What signals?"
"Out signals." Ray gestured vaguely upward with a wrench. "Up. Wherever out is."
Daryl sat down. He was cold and tired and hungry and he had been walking for three days and he didn't have anywhere else to go. "You really think it works?"
Ray looked at him. His eyes were tired but sharp. The kind of eyes that had been looking at something for a long time and were only now noticing the rest of the world. "I worked at JPL for thirty-one years," he said. "Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Pasadena. I was part of the propulsion systems team for three Voyager missions and two of the Mars rovers and the Deep Space Network. I know how signals work."
"Did you really?"
"Yes."
"Then why are you building a launcher out of junk?"
Ray put the wrench down. Looked at the machine. Looked at Daryl. "You want to know the truth?"
"Yeah."
"The truth is I don't know if it works."

Helen left in 1994. Not dramatically. No arguments, no packed bags, no slamming doors. She just stopped trying one day and the stopping was its own kind of departure.
"She left because I didn't care," Ray told Daryl, three weeks into their unlikely arrangement. Daryl had started appearing at the plant regularly—not every night, but often enough that Ray had begun setting aside a portion of his canned soup for him.
"I didn't care about the job," Ray continued. "I didn't care about the marriage. I didn't care about anything that wasn't the work. And the work was the only thing that cared about me, which is a sentence I never thought I'd say out loud."
"What happened at JPL?"
"They let me go. Not fired. Let me go. Same thing, different words. Budget cuts. Restructuring. The machine doesn't need me anymore. There are younger engineers who can do what I did, only cheaper, only faster, only without needing three hours of silence every morning to think about orbital mechanics."
"You seem to think orbital mechanics are important."
"I do." Ray picked up a piece of wire and examined it the way a watchmaker examines a gear. "Orbital mechanics are honest. They don't lie. You can fudge the numbers in politics or business or relationships, but in orbital mechanics, the math is the math. If your numbers are wrong, the satellite doesn't orbit. It crashes. There's no negotiating with gravity. No lobbying Congress to adjust the gravitational constant. It just is."
"So what are you building now?"
"The launcher. It sends signals. Not radio—I've tried radio. Radio gets lost in the noise. But if you use the right frequency and the right modulation and the right timing—" He stopped. Shook his head. "I don't know. Maybe it doesn't work. Maybe I'm fifty-two years old and I built a machine out of junk and I think it's important and it isn't."
Daryl was silent for a while. Then: "My dad used to build things. Woodworking. He had a shop in the garage. After my mom left, he stopped building. Just stopped. One day he went into the garage and the door stayed closed and when I opened it months later the tools were covered in dust and there was a dead fly on the workbench and that was the last thing he built because he couldn't figure out how to build anything that would make things better."
Ray nodded. "I know that feeling."
"Do you think this—" Daryl gestured at the launcher "—will make things better?"
"No." Ray set down the wire. "I don't think it will make anything better. I think it will make a sound. A sound that might, if everything goes right, be heard by somebody somewhere. That's all."
"Why?"
Ray looked at him. "Because for thirty-one years, I sent signals into space. Probes, rovers, networks. I sent data back and forth across millions of miles, and each piece of data was a message that said: we are here. We are listening. We are trying to understand. And after thirty-one years, nobody was listening to me."
He paused.
"I thought I'd try sending a signal that wasn't data. Just a signal. An existence proof. We were here. We tried."

"But you're not sending a message," Daryl said. "You're just sending a pulse."
"A pulse on the hydrogen line is a message. It says: someone here understands the fundamental frequency of hydrogen. Someone here understands physics. Someone here is looking up instead of down."
For eleven months, the launcher sent pulses. Once per night, at exactly midnight, Ray would power it up, wait for the capacitors to charge, and press a button. The machine would emit a single pulse—a burst of energy at 1420.405 MHz that would travel upward through the atmosphere and into space and then onward, forever, whether anyone heard it or not.
Daryl watched him do it three hundred and thirty-seven times.

He was powering up the launcher, his hand on the button, when he felt it—a tightness in his chest, like a fist closing around his heart. He dropped the wrench. Grabbed the edge of the workbench. Tried to breathe.
Daryl was there in seconds. He had been sitting on an upturned crate, reading a paperback novel he'd stolen from a gas station. He dropped the book and caught Ray before he hit the floor.
"Ray!"
"Don't—stop—" Ray managed. His hand was on Daryl's wrist, grip surprisingly strong. "The—launcher—"
"I'll turn it on. Just—just stay still."
"No. The—sequence. Midnight. Don't miss—" Ray's eyes were open, fixed on something above and beyond the ceiling of the abandoned plant. His voice was very quiet. "Send—it. Please."
Daryl looked at the launcher. Looked at Ray. Looked at the button. He pressed it.
The machine hummed. The capacitors charged. A pulse of energy shot upward at 1420.405 MHz, carrying no data, no message, no coordinates. Just a signal. A presence. A single note in the vast silence of the universe.
It was enough.
Ray O'Brien died at 12:07 AM on November thirteenth, 1997. Daryl Young sat on the floor of an abandoned car plant in Michigan and held the hand of a man he had known for three months and understood for three minutes and would carry for the rest of his life.

Daryl moved back in with his grandmother in Flint. He finished high school. He joined the Navy because it was the closest thing to upward he could imagine. He served for four years. He never went to sea. He worked in communications, which was ironic, because he never talked much.
On his last night of service, he stood on the pier at Naval Station Norfolk and looked out at the ocean. The sky was clear. The stars were bright. He thought about Ray, sitting in an abandoned plant in Michigan, pressing a button every night and sending a signal into the dark.
He thought about the signal, out there somewhere, traveling at the speed of light, carrying nothing and carrying everything. He thought about how lonely it must be to send a signal and not know if anyone is listening. And he thought about how brave it must be to send a signal anyway.
Daryl was twenty-three years old. He didn't know what was waiting for him. He knew only that he was alive and he was breathing and somewhere in the vast emptiness between the stars, a pulse of energy at 1420.405 MHz was moving forward, carried by nothing but physics and intention, saying what every signal that has ever been sent has said:
