The Crewman's Confession

My name is Mike Torres. I'm thirty-two years old. I'm from East NY, third generation Puerto Rican, and I used to own a gas station on Flatbush until the oil prices collapsed and the big chains bought the block and put me out like yesterday's trash. Now I work on ships. Not because I love the sea. Because the sea pays better than nothing.

The ship was called the Odyssey. It was a cargo freighter, old but functional, flying the Panamanian flag but crewed by Americans and Mexicans and guys I couldn't place because they spoke too much or too little. The captain was Dr. Klaus. Forty-seven, former NSA analyst, thin and intense and wore lab coats even when he was on the bridge. He'd been academic once—papers on bioacoustic surveillance, grants from the Defense Department, that kind of thing. Then something happened. An ethics investigation. He left the academy. Came back to New York. Started working for people who didn't ask questions.

I didn't like him. I didn't dislike him. He was just... wrong. In the way that smart people get wrong when they stop caring about the stuff that isn't data.

The whale was called Odyssey too. Same name as the ship. Poetic, maybe. Or ironic. She was a female humpback, forty tons, forty feet from nose to tail, with scars along her flank where the electrodes had been attached and reattached and reattached. Genetic edit—small ones, just enough to make her responsive to certain frequencies. Not much. Just enough.

They used her to smuggle biological制剂. New drug, rare disease treatment, priced by a pharmaceutical company at eight hundred thousand dollars per dose. Legal cargo. Illegal transport. The company didn't want their supply chain traced. The patients needed the drug. The price was insane. I understood both problems and neither solution.
