Empty Chairs
ACT I
Billy Ray got to the gas station at six-thirty the way he always did, which was late, which was fine, because nobody was there to tell him he was late.
The station was called Ray's Stop, which was a coincidence. His father had named it, or tried to. He had been filling out the paperwork for the transfer—the ownership, the keys, the thing that was supposed to happen on Billy Ray's fourteenth birthday, which had been three months ago—when the Event happened.
Billy Ray unlocked the front door and flipped the switch by the counter. The fluorescent lights flickered on, buzzing like trapped flies. "What happens if I take more than I need?"

He was good at providing things that are not needed. It was not a skill. It was a condition. It was the state of being a person in a world where the people who needed things had disappeared and the things that needed providing had no one to provide them to.
