"You need to publish this," Margaret said.

"I can't."

She looked at him. "Why not?"

"Because if I publish the full equations, they can be weaponized. Not militarily—politically. Economically. "I don't know."

"You're a scholar. Your job is to find truth and share it."

"My job," Sebastian said slowly, "is to find truth and not get the world killed with it."

He became what he would later call an "academic wall-builder"—a scholar who holds a theory in isolation, knowing that its full publication would cause more harm than good. He refined the model in secret. He tested it against historical data. Every test confirmed it. The model worked. And working meant it was dangerous.

In 1925, Charles Vanderbilt found him.

Vanderbilt was a financier—old money, new instincts, the kind of man who looked at sociology the way a hunter looks at a new rifle: not for the theory of ballistics, but for what you could shoot. He had heard about Sebastian's work through mutual contacts and requested a meeting.

They met in a hotel suite on Fifth Avenue. Vanderbilt poured two glasses of bourbon. Sebastian did not take his.

"Dr. Kraus," Vanderbilt said, "I am a practical man. I don't care about your theories. I care about what they can do. You've found a way to predict conflict. Between nations. Between markets. Between any two entities that compete for resources."

"Your summary is reductive."

"Your theory is abstract. I need concrete application. Can you use your equations to predict which countries will go to war in the next five years?"

"Yes."

"Can you use them to predict which stocks will rise and fall during those wars?"

Sebastian hesitated. "The model is not designed for—"

"Dr. Kraus. I have a fund. Three million dollars. I want you to build a strategy based on your equations. I'll give you unlimited resources. I'll give you staff, data, access to any government you need. In exchange, you give me the edge."

"What you're asking is to weaponize academic research for private profit."

"What I'm asking is for you to stop playing scholar and start being useful."

Sebastian left the hotel without taking the bourbon. But that night, in his small apartment above a Chinese restaurant on Washington Square, he lay awake and wondered: was Margaret right? Was he a coward for not sharing the full theory? Or was Vanderbilt right? Was he useless for keeping it?

He never answered the question. Because before he could decide, the world decided for him.

In 1928, he was invited to speak at a closed-door session in Geneva. A group of international relations scholars, funded by the newly formed League of Nations think tank, wanted to hear about his framework. He gave a sanitized presentation—abstract concepts, no equations, no specific predictions. But when a French delegate asked a sharp question about deterrence equilibria, Sebastian answered from memory.

It was the wrong move.

The French delegate's supervisor was a man who had spent his career designing colonial policy. He heard Sebastian's answer not as academic discussion but as a manual. Within a year, he had adapted the model to justify a new strategy of "managed deterrence" in French West Africa—a policy that would, as Sebastian later learned from Margaret's reporting, lead to a series of brutal suppressions that killed thousands.

The model was out. And it was being used exactly as he had feared.

He withdrew from public life. He accepted a position at a small college in New Jersey, where he taught undergraduate sociology to students who cared more about football than game theory. He continued his research in private, refining the model, understanding it more deeply, and saying nothing.

Margaret visited him once, in the autumn of 1929. She looked tired. Her hair was streaked with gray, and the anger that had defined her for so long had settled into something heavier: resignation.

"The markets are going to crash," she said, sitting in his office with a cup of terrible institutional coffee. "Not might. Will. Your model predicts it. Everyone else is too busy making money to see it."

"Margaret—"

"I know. It's not your fault. You didn't cause this. Nobody caused it. It's just—the system. The equations. The dark forest. Whatever you want to call it." She set down her cup. "Do you regret it?"

"Regret what?"

"Finding it. Knowing it. Carrying it alone while the world dances toward the cliff and calls it a ballroom."

He looked out the window. The trees were stripped bare. The sky was the color of wet cement.

"I don't know," he said honestly. "I don't know whether I'd choose differently if I could go back. I only know that I am tired, Margaret. I am so very tired of knowing everything and being able to do nothing about it."

She nodded. She stood to leave. At the door, she paused.

"When it's over," she said, "when the crash happens and everything falls apart—will you write it down? The whole theory? Not for the world. For yourself."

"Yes," he said. "I will."

The crash came in October. Margaret watched it from New York, her think tank's research becoming suddenly, violently relevant. Sebastian watched it from New Jersey, grading papers and pretending not to notice the patterns he had predicted playing out in real time.

He wrote the full theory that winter. Not for publication. Not for any purpose other than to leave a record. He wrote it by hand, in a leather-bound notebook, in the quiet hours after midnight, while the world outside adjusted to a new and harsher reality.

He did not know if the theory was ultimately true. Truth was a luxury that required stability, and the world had none. But he knew that it had been real—at least for a time. And he knew that somewhere, in some future when the dark forest had grown quieter or louder or simply different, someone might read his notebook and understand.

That would have to be enough.

Outside his window, the New Jersey night was cold and absolute. Inside, Sebastian Kraus wrote the last line of his theory, closed the notebook, and sat in the dark for a very long time.
