The Gilded Vow
"You won't go," he said, not opening his eyes. "You'll stay. You'll teach at the school. And when I'm gone—and I will be—you'll take over the land that isn't there anymore."
Eleanor read the letter again. Mr. Pemberton, steward of the Ashworth estate: "Your family's debt to the Ashworth concern is, to put it plainly, unpayable. My employer, Mr. Percival Ashworth, has agreed to a proposal that would settle the matter entirely, provided you comply with one condition."
The condition was this: Eleanor would travel to London and serve as Mr. Ashworth's "companion" for three months. Not a servant. Not a mistress. A companion. A word so carefully chosen it might as well have been a cage.
That night, she sat with Thomas in the kitchen after the others had gone to bed. He was twenty-four, with hands roughened by the mine and a voice that could soften a storm. In his pocket, he had carved a small wooden carriage—every detail, from the wheels to the seat, perfect.
"If you go," he said, "I'll be here when you come back."
"I'm not going."
"You're going." He put the wooden carriage on the table. It looked absurdly small against the scarred surface. "Because if you don't, they'll take the farm. And if they take the farm, I can't stay. I'll have to go south. To the new mines."
She held the wooden carriage and felt its weight. It was barely four ounces. It might as well have been ten stones.
Chapter Two: The House at the End of the Road
Ashworth House stood at the edge of Nottinghamshire like a challenge to architecture itself. A Gothic revival built on the bones of something older, something medieval—the kind of house that looked at the sky and said: I have been here longer than you.
Eleanor arrived on a Thursday. The carriage ride had taken seven hours through rain and mud and stretches of road where the wheels sank so deep she thought they would never come free. When she finally saw the gate—iron, black, twisted into shapes that resembled thorns—she was so cold her fingers could not close around the leather strap of her single trunk.
Mr. Percival Ashworth was not there to greet her. Instead, a woman appeared at the top of the grand staircase—tall, severe, dressed in black, with a face that seemed to have been carved from the same marble as the mantelpiece. Lady Margaret Ashworth. His stepmother. The woman who ran everything that mattered.
"So you are the schoolmistress," she said. Her voice was not unkind, but it was not kind either. It was a tool, used to measure and judge.
"I am," Eleanor said.
"You are younger than I expected."
"I am also older than I look. I find it useful in the classroom."
A pause. Then, so faintly Eleanor thought she might have imagined it: a flicker of something in Lady Margaret's eyes. Approval? Surprise? Regret?
"Percival is in his study. He does not expect you until tomorrow. He has been informed of your arrival and has no objection. I trust you understand the terms."
Eleanor did. The terms were written on paper she had not signed and on paper she had not read. She nodded anyway.
Chapter Three: The Man in the Study
Percival Ashworth was taller than Eleanor had imagined. That was the first thing. The second thing was his hands—long-fingered, steady, resting on the edge of a desk that was covered with ledgers so thick they looked like stone blocks.
The third thing was his face. He was not handsome in any conventional sense. His jaw was too sharp, his nose too straight, his eyes a grey so pale they were almost colourless. He looked like a man who had decided not to feel anything and had almost succeeded.
"You're Eleanor Vance," he said. It was not a question.
"I am."
"You are younger than I expected."
"I am also older than I look. I find it useful in the classroom."
Something crossed his face—too fast to name. Amusement? Recognition? He turned back to his ledgers.
"Three months," he said. "You will dine with my mother on Sundays. You will attend church on Sundays. You will not ask questions about family business. You will not—this is important—speak to the press."
"What if the press speaks to me?"
"Then you will not answer." He looked at her, and for a moment the grey in his eyes deepened, like water over stone. "Do you understand, Miss Vance?"
"Very well, Mr. Ashworth."
"Do I call you Eleanor? Or Miss Vance?"
"Either is fine."
"Good. Then Eleanor. Three months. After that, you leave, and we both go our separate ways. Agreed?"
She looked at him—at the way his mouth moved when he said "agreed," at the way his shoulders sat slightly forward, as if he carried an invisible weight—and she said: "Agreed."
Chapter Four: The Apple Pie at Midnight
She stayed in the small room at the end of the second-floor corridor—the kind of room that had once been a nursery but had been downgraded to something less dignified. The wallpaper was peeling. The hearth was cold. The window looked out over a garden that had not been tended in years.
On her second night, she could not sleep. The house was full of sounds—creaks, whispers, the distant tick of a clock that seemed to be counting something she could not hear. At midnight, she got up, found the kitchen, and began to bake.
She had learned to bake from her mother, who had taught her before the fever took her. Flour, butter, sugar, apples from the garden. The kind of pie that was not beautiful but was honest.
When she carried a slice into the parlour the next morning and found Percival sitting there with a ledger and a cup of tea that had gone cold, both of them stared at the other in something like surprise.
"What is that?" he asked.
"Apple pie."
"I can see that."
"It tastes better than it looks."
He took a bite. His expression did not change, but his hand—the one holding the fork—trembled, just once.
"It's terrible," he said.
"Thank you."
"It's... unusual."
"Coming from you, that's the highest compliment."
He ate the rest of the slice in silence.
Chapter Five: The Secret Behind the Wall
She found it on a Tuesday. She had been sent to the library to look for a botany book—Lady Margaret had asked for something on native ferns—and when she reached the back row of shelves, she noticed the wall was not flush. There was a gap, no wider than her hand, between the shelves and the stone behind them.
She pulled. The bookshelf swung inward on hinges so well-oiled they made no sound.
The room beyond was small—no larger than a closet—but it was not a closet. It was a study, or rather, the remains of one. A desk. A chair. A ledger. And on the desk, a stack of journals bound in cracked leather, their spines cracked with age.
She should not have read them. She knew she should not have read them. But curiosity is not a moral choice; it is a force, like gravity.
The first journal belonged to Julian Ashworth, dated 1873. The first entry read: "Today I placed Thomas in the Upstairs House. He is my father. He is also the third Ashworth to suffer the affliction. I have locked the door. I have thrown away the key. May God forgive us, for we are incapable of forgiving ourselves."
She sat on the floor. The dust tasted like centuries.
Chapter Six: The Hearing
She did not go to the parliamentary hearing to save Percival. She went because Thomas had written her a letter three days earlier. The letter contained three sentences: "Three men didn't come home from the mine on Monday. The manager says it was a gas leak. I know what I saw. They were buried alive because the supports weren't changed."
At the hearing, Percival sat in the front row, dressed in black, his face the colour of old parchment. He was not supposed to be there. Lady Margaret had forbidden it. But he had come anyway.
Eleanor sat behind him, in the shadowed gallery, watching as the committee members questioned the mine inspector. The inspector lied. Everyone knew he lied. But knowing and proving are different things.
Then Eleanor stood.
She did not announce herself. She simply walked down the steps to the floor of the chamber, her shoes loud on the wooden stairs, and placed a small vial on the table before the chairman.
"This," she said, "is the sample of the coal dust from the Bell mine. I collected it myself. It contains a higher concentration of pyrite than is legally permitted. Pyrite, when burned, produces sulfur dioxide—a gas heavier than air, which pools in the lower tunnels. It does not explode. It suffocates. The supports were not the problem. The ventilation was. And the ventilation was disabled to save money."
The room went silent.
Percival turned in his seat. He looked at the vial. He looked at Eleanor. And in that moment, she saw something in his face that she had never seen before: fear.
Not for himself. For her.
Chapter Seven: The Letter in the Box
Seven years later, in a small school in a small village in Yorkshire, Eleanor Vance opened a package that arrived with no return address. Inside was a tin of Yorkshire tea—dark, rough, the kind you could buy at the corner shop for a penny. There was no letter. There never was.
She brewed the tea in a chipped cup and sat at her desk, looking out at the valley. The rain had stopped. The sky was pale blue, the colour of a child's eyes.
She drank the tea. It was bitter. It was warm.
In London, in a room that had once been a nursery, Percival Ashworth stood before a locked door. He did not have the key. He never had. He simply stood there, listening to the silence on the other side of the wood, and thought of apple pie that was terrible and unusual.
He went back to his desk. He opened a ledger. He wrote a new entry: "April 14th. Tea arrived today. Bitter. Warm. Good."
Then he closed the book, and the room, and the day, and waited for the next rain.
