The Last Syllable
I.
The fog rolled off the Thames like a living thing, thick and yellow, swallowing the gas lamps whole. Thomas Blackwood stood on the embankment at three in the morning, his boots soaked through, his coat heavy with rain that had stopped falling an hour ago. The letter arrived from Edinburgh on a Tuesday. Thomas was in his study, signing orders to evict three thousand workers from the company towns surrounding his railways, when the post boy delivered it. The handwriting was elegant, precise, academic.
Dear Mr. Blackwood, the letter began, I am a descendant of the Ashworth family, and I have been researching the history of Elizabeth Ashworth for some years. What I can tell you is this: Elizabeth was real. She was the daughter of Lord Ashworth's brother, born to a woman he could not marry. When she fell in love with a textile worker from Manchester—your ancestor, perhaps, though I cannot prove it—her family locked her in the tower of Ashworth House. She was not allowed visitors. She was not allowed letters. She was not allowed to exist.
She died in the winter of 1783, at twenty-two years of age. They said it was consumption. It was not. It was starvation, slow and deliberate, administered by the people who claimed to love her.

Thomas sat in his study long after the letter was finished. The candles had burned low. The fog pressed against the windows like a living thing, pressing in, pressing in, pressing in.
He walked to the window and opened it. The fog poured in, thick and yellow and smelling of the river. He took the silver rose brooch from his pocket—the one he had found on the embankment the night he first saw her—and held it between his fingers. It was still cold. It had always been cold.
"I remember you, Elizabeth," he said to the empty room.
