The satellite phone was the size of a brick and twice as heavy, a relic from the old military's inventory that survived the collapse the way cockroaches survive apocalypses—by being ugly, unglamorous, and utterly indifferent to anything that wasn't immediately in front of its lens. Marcus kept it in a waterproof case beneath his cot in the ruins of what had once been a Walmart Supercenter outside what used to be Wichita. The sign still stood, half-collapsed, the letters chewed by rust and time, but the building's skeleton held, and that was enough.

He wasn't always a ruins-dweller. Once, he had been Marcus Hale, Sergeant First Class, United States Federal Defense Force, Remote Operations Division. The FDF had been the last serious attempt to keep the old military structure intact after the collapse—a professional army, with uniforms and ranks and a chain of command that stretched from the remnant command centers in the Rocky Mountain bunkers all the way out to guys like Marcus, who sat in air-conditioned trailers in abandoned towns and operated drones that were themselves relics, salvaged from pre-collapse stockpiles and kept flying by mechanics who understood them the way a priest understands a dead language.

The drones didn't look like drones. They looked like the intersection of an airplane and a fish—sweeping wings with a body that was all sensor array and fuel tank, no cockpit, no pilot, just a payload bay that carried whatever the command center decided needed to be dropped or shot at the moment. Marcus didn't drop anything. His drones carried cameras and microphones and the occasional precision-guided munition for targets that the command center, through a cascade of algorithmic filtering and human sign-off, determined deserved to die.

Sarah, who shared his ruin with her ten-year-old brother Leo, knew the sound of Marcus coming back from a shift. It was the same three stages every time. First, he'd take off the headset and sit motionless for a full minute, his eyes open, fixed on some point somewhere above the collapsed ceiling of the Walmart. The drones saw in infrared and ultraviolet and everything between—Marcus's eyes, when he came back, were still trying to process a spectrum the human eye wasn't built for. Then he'd blink, shake his head once, like he was clearing water from his ears. Then he'd reach for the bottle of whatever pills were left in his med kit.

"You were gone eight hours," Sarah said one evening, watching him sit through the stages. The satellite phone sat on the counter beside her, its antenna a stubby black protrusion that looked like it belonged to a much larger and more important machine.

"Six. Command adds two for handoff."

"Same difference."

"Not really. Handoff means the next operator inherits my dirty data. They get the audio I filtered, the coordinates I confirmed, the targets I didn't question. It's like passing a hot coal."

She had learned to read his shifts the way she read weather—by the quality of his silence afterward. A shift where he came back and immediately started checking the perimeter was a ground contact shift, meaning something had gone loud downrange. A shift where he came back and sat in the dark was an aerial recon run—no contact, just watching, just collecting data that someone, somewhere, would decide what to do with.

The data card fell out of his pack when she was moving it to keep it dry. She picked it up, turned it over in her hands—a small rectangular thing, military-grade, encrypted with keys that changed every forty-eight hours—and she knew she shouldn't insert it into the terminal. But the terminal was the only thing in the ruin that could read it, and she had been helping Marcus maintain it for months, and her fingers knew how to slot it in.

The card contained raw audio from the drones' last shifts. Not the cleaned-up version that went to command, where the background noise was filtered and the voices enhanced, but the raw feed—everything the microphones picked up, compressed through twenty years of degraded satellite bandwidth. Children's voices. A woman praying in a language Sarah didn't know. Then a sound that was either an explosion or a building collapsing, or both simultaneously, and then a tone that meant the drone was turning toward its next coordinate.

She played it once. Then she played it again. Then she sat in the dim light of the ruin, listening to the satellite phone blink its single red LED, a light that meant the connection to command was active, that the machine was still talking to the people who still believed they were in charge.

Two days later, a voice came over the satellite phone. It was a command officer, Marcus's voice crackling through a channel that hadn't been used properly in months, distorted by interference and the slow decay of the satellite network.

"Sergeant Hale. Your operational security clearance is under review. Report to Sector 4 debriefing at—"

The voice broke up. When it came back, it was someone else, speaking words that meant the same thing in a different voice. Marcus's access was suspended. Pending investigation. Standard procedure.

Sarah turned off the satellite phone. She stood in the middle of the ruin with her hands on her hips and listened to the wind move through the collapsed ceiling, carrying with it the dust of a thousand ruined buildings, each one a monument to something that had been important once and was now just geometry and rust.

Marcus packed his bag that night. Not dramatically—there was no scene, no shouted argument, no cinematic moment of decision. He folded his uniform (what was left of it), stacked his ration packs, and slung the duffel over his shoulder. He left the satellite phone on the counter.

"Where are you going?" Sarah asked.

"The same place. They just changed the coordinate."

"Don't."

He looked at her, and in his eyes she saw the same fatigue she saw in the ruin itself—the slow, inevitable process of a thing that was built for one purpose slowly being repurposed for another, until the original purpose was just a memory buried under layers of adaptation and compromise.

"Sarah. I'm already not here. The terminal just lets them rent what's left."

He left at dawn. He took the duffel and the uniform and the med kit. He left the data card in its waterproof case beneath Sarah's cot.

She didn't throw it away. She didn't show it to Leo. She put it back where she found it, beneath her cot, in the waterproof case, alongside the spare batteries and the flares that had expired three years ago and the map of the old highway system that was now just a list of destinations that no longer existed.

A year later, a package arrived. It was carried by a runner from Sector 4, a gaunt teenager who traded information for ration credits and knew which ruins still had working radios. He dropped the package on the counter and moved on without stopping.

Inside was a folded piece of paper with an address on it— Sector 7, near the old riverbed, written in handwriting that was Marcus's but not Marcus's, the way a man's handwriting changes when he's been writing by flashlight for too long. The address was followed by three words in a different hand, larger and rougher, as if written with a shaking arm: "He's alive. Keep him safe."

Taped to the inside of the package was a small photograph. It showed a boy, maybe four years old, with Marcus's jaw and a pair of eyes that were entirely his own. On the back, in Marcus's hand, was a date and a coordinate.

Sarah took the photograph to the only light source they had—a kerosene lantern that burned for exactly forty minutes before the fuel ran out—and held it up to the flame. The boy's face was steady and serious, the kind of serious that children get when they've been told too young that the world is not kind and they should prepare accordingly.

She walked to the back of the ruin, to the place where the old checkout counters had been, and dug a small hole in the cracked concrete floor. She placed the photograph inside, covered it with broken concrete and dust, and marked the spot with a rusted barcode from one of the old Walmart price tags.

Then she went back to the counter, sat down, and listened to the wind.
