Rust in the Rain
The office smelled like whiskey and regret, which in Brooklyn is basically the same thing.
I sat behind a desk that had belonged to a man named Murray who had died of a heart attack three weeks before I bought this place, and I stared at the file on my desk and tried to understand why a missing person case had a senator's name attached to it like a grenade with the pin pulled.

Neither should you, Shadow, I said.

Then we'll talk to the press, I said. The same way you tried to.
Shadow laughed, a dry, broken sound. The press is owned, Jack. Half of it by Cross's friends. The other half by men who are afraid of Cross's friends. You can't fight an enemy that's everywhere and nowhere. You can't expose a truth that everyone has agreed to ignore.

I stood up. Shadow looked at me with those wide, terrified, beautiful eyes, and I understood that I was leaving him there, and that I might never come back, and that every moral code I had ever pretended to believe in was screaming at me to stay.
But I am a detective now, not a hero. And heroes stay. Detectives work.
I walked out of the warehouse and into the Brooklyn rain, which had been falling since dusk and showed no sign of stopping. The streets were slick and black, reflecting the neon signs like a distorted funhouse mirror, and I walked with my collar up and my hands in my pockets and my .38 heavy against my hip, and I thought about Frank and Shadow and all the men who had trusted me to bring them home and how I had failed every single one of them.
I went to Alvarez's apartment, which was in Hell's Kitchen, third floor, no elevator, the kind of place that tells you everything you need to know about a city's priorities. She answered the door in a sweater and jeans, her hair down for once, and she looked at my face and understood without my having to speak.
I have the names, I said, handing her a folded piece of paper that weighed more than it should. Every name. Cross, the aides, the men in the warehouse. Shadow's evidence is in a safety deposit box. The key is in my desk drawer, in a copy machine cartridge, because apparently I have a sense of humor.
Alvarez took the paper and read it, her expression never changing. When she was finished, she looked up at me and nodded once.
Then we publish it tomorrow, she said.
No, I said. You publish it tomorrow. I'm disappearing.
She understood immediately. If we're together, they'll take us both. If you're gone, they'll think you ran, and they'll make a mistake. They always do.
I smiled, a thin, humorless thing. Veterans have a stubbornness that borders on stupidity.
She reached out and touched my arm, briefly, firmly, the way women touch men they want to remember and are not sure they will. Be careful, Jack McCallum.
I walked back into the rain. I walked past my office, where Murray's desk still sat and where Shadow's photograph still hung on the wall, and I walked past the bar where I had wasted a week drinking whiskey that tasted like failure, and I walked to the Brooklyn Bridge, where the East River moved black and slow beneath me, carrying everything downstream toward a sea that didn't care about senators or operations or the names of boys from Queens who had tried to tell the truth.
I stood on the bridge for a long time, watching the water, feeling the rain soak through my coat and into my skin, and I thought about throwing the evidence into the river, letting it all dissolve, letting the whole rotten thing sink.
But then I thought of Shadow on that crate, his eyes still alive, and Frank in the mud, and the photograph in my desk drawer, and I knew that I couldn't. Not because I was brave. I wasn't. But because silence is a kind of death, and I had already buried enough friends to know the difference.
I turned and walked back into the city, into the rain, into the dark, carrying the weight of everything I had seen and everything I had done and everything I would never be able to undo.
Behind me, in my office, the phone rang once in the empty darkness, and then stopped, and the rain kept falling, and the river kept moving, and the city kept turning, indifferent as ever, on its axis of rust and light and endless, beautiful, terrible life.
