The Gilded Night
The Gilded Night
The speakeasy smelled of gin and desperation, of expensive perfume layered over the sour tang of illicit whiskey. Daisy Lane sang on a stage no bigger than a closet, her voice a thing of silver and smoke that made the men in the room forget their debts and the women forget their husbands. She was twenty-eight years old, which in 1927 New York meant she was already getting old if you were a chorus girl and barely young enough if you were anything else.
Her name was Daisy Lane, but nobody in this room knew that. They called her "Silver Tongue" because of her voice and "Trouble" because of the way she carried herself—like a woman who had learned that the world was a knife and decided to become sharper.
The night was a Wednesday, which meant it was a small night. Small nights were better for her. Fewer eyes, fewer drunk men with too much money and too little sense. She sang three songs, collected her dollar and a half, and went out the back door into the alley where a man was waiting for her with a briefcase and an expression that suggested his life was more complicated than hers.
It probably was.
"Miss Lane," he said. "Mr. Ashworth requests a word."
Daisy looked at the man's shoes. They were Italian leather. The most expensive thing she had ever seen.
"Who's Mr. Ashworth?"
Thomas Ashworth III arrived ten minutes later, and Daisy learned that money could be a kind of architecture. He was built from it—tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in a suit that probably cost more than her annual rent. His face was the kind of face that belonged in a bank vault: secure, imposing, and completely unreadable.
"Miss Lane," he said. "I represent my family's interests in this city. We have reason to believe you have something that belongs to us."
"I have three dollars and a half in my pocket and a cough that gets worse every winter," she said. "If that belongs to you, go ahead and take it."
"Not currency." He opened the briefcase. Inside were papers—dozens of them, yellowed and brittle. "These documents were part of a shipment that went missing from our warehouse in New Jersey six weeks ago. Our investigators traced them to a man who visited your establishment last Thursday night. You may have taken them by mistake."
Daisy stared at the papers. She had not stolen anything. She had, however, picked up a small leather portfolio from a booth in the corner of the bar while she was looking for her purse. She had used it as a coaster for her gin.
"Let me see," she said.
He opened the portfolio. Inside was a single sheet of paper with a seal—Ashworth, etched in gold. Everything else was blank.
"The value is not in the paper," he said. "It is in what the paper represents. A contract, Miss Lane. Between my family and certain individuals who are currently very powerful in this city."
She looked at the blank page. She looked at Thomas Ashworth. She thought about the dollar and a half in her pocket and the eviction notice under her mattress.
"What do you want?" she asked.
"Ten thousand dollars," he said. "For the return of the document."
Daisy laughed. It was not a nice laugh. "You want to pay me to give back your stupid blank paper?"
"It is not blank to the right people."
She thought about her mother's voice, telling her she was throwing her life away singing in dive bars. She thought about the loan shark who had been asking questions at her apartment building. She thought about how her father used to tell her she had a voice that could stop a train.
"Fine," she said. "Ten thousand. But I want it in cash. And I want it tonight."
The contract he produced was thick and official and smelled like someone else's life. It asked her to do one thing:
Appear at the Ashworth family dinner on Saturday night as his fiancée.
"Just for the evening," the lawyer said. "Shake hands. Smile. Do not speak unless spoken to. Do not, under any circumstances, reveal that this is a contract arrangement."
"Why me?" she asked.
"Because you have no connection to the Ashworth family," he said. "Because you are invisible to our enemies. Because when you walked into that speakeasy last Thursday, you did not look at the portfolio as something to steal. You looked at it as something to use."
She had been honest with him about that, at least.
Saturday night found her in a dress that made her feel like a stranger and a diamond necklace that made her feel like a criminal. The Ashworth estate was on Long Island, a sprawling Victorian monstrosity that smelled of old money and older secrets. The guests arrived in cars that cost more than most Americans earned in a lifetime, and Daisy stood in the drawing room, sipping champagne she did not understand, listening to people talk about things she did not care about.
Thomas was everywhere and nowhere. He moved through the room like a shadow, talking to men with faces like carved stone and women with eyes like frozen lakes. He did not look at her once.
At eleven o'clock, the patriarch of the Ashworth family appeared. Thomas Ashworth II was seventy years old, barely alive, and still the most dangerous man in the room.
"Who is this?" he asked, pointing at Daisy with a cane that probably contained a dagger.
"This is Daisy," Thomas III said. "My fiancée."
The old man studied her. His eyes were sharp, old, and full of something that might have been calculation or might have been pain.
"A singer," he said. Not a question.
"Yes, sir."
"Sing for us, then."
The room went quiet. People turned to look at her. Daisy Lane had sung in bars and clubs and speakeasies, but she had never sung in front of an audience that looked at her like she was a specimen under glass.
She opened her mouth. And the voice came out—silver and smoke and something she did not know she had inside her. She sang a song her mother had taught her, a song about a woman who loved a man who loved the sea more than her. It was a song about loss and longing and the quiet courage of women who loved men who could not be loved back.
When she finished, the room was so quiet she could hear the ice melting in the champagne glasses.
Thomas Ashworth III was looking at her with an expression she had not expected. It was not admiration. It was not desire. It was recognition.
"You are not what I expected," he said later, when they were alone on the terrace.
"You are not what I expected either," she said. "I expected someone colder."
"I am cold," he said. "But you—" He paused. "You are warm. It is a dangerous thing to be warm in our family."
"I'm a singer," she said. "Warmth is the product."
He looked at her for a long moment. Then he said something that surprised her more than anything else in her life.
"My father is dying," he said. "Not this dinner. Not metaphorically. He has weeks, maybe days. The family is gathering because they want to know who gets the empire when he is gone. And I—" He stopped. Started again. "I am not sure I want the empire."
Daisy sat down on the terrace wall. The city lights of Manhattan glittered across the water like scattered diamonds.
"What do you want?" she asked.
"I do not know," he said. "And that terrifies me more than my father's death."
She reached out and took his hand. His fingers were cold. Hers were not.
"I sing for a living," she said. "My whole life I have been trying to make people feel something. And I think—just between us, between two people who do not know what they want—the feeling I want most right now is for you to stop carrying the weight of this whole damn family on your shoulders."
He looked at her. The city lights made his eyes look like polished onyx. And for the first time in his life, Thomas Ashworth III let someone else hold the weight.
Above them, a ship horn sounded across the water. The Prohibition era was ending. The old world was ending. And somewhere in the house, an old man was dying, and his son was learning what it meant to be human.
Daisy Lane sang a song under the stars, and Thomas Ashworth III listened, and the gilded night held them both for one more moment before the morning came.
