V The Last Signature
The needle trembled on the galvanometer, a thin silver line quivering against the dark glass face. Arthur Blackwell adjusted the wavelength dial by a fraction of a millimetre, held his breath, and listened.
What came through was not music. It was a voice, faint and crackling, speaking words in a language he did not recognise. The signal had crossed three hundred miles of English countryside to reach his father's abandoned observatory on the moors of northern Yorkshire, and it carried with it something that made the hair on his arms stand up like static charge.
He recorded it anyway. Every night for seventeen nights, the signal had come at precisely two fourteen in the morning, and every night it had spoken the same six words before dissolving into static. Arthur had transcribed them all. He had counted the syllables. He had mapped the pitch variations against the position of the moon. He was, he told himself, a methodical man.
The contract on his desk was another matter entirely.
It had arrived three days before the first signal, delivered by a solicitor named Mr. Thornbury who refused to make eye contact as he presented the document. The Blackwell family estate, the solicitor explained, was in difficulty. Not the kind of difficulty that could be solved with careful accounting and reasonable expectations. The kind that required either a very large sum of money or a very large sacrifice.
Arthur, who had been educated at Oxford and trained in the meticulous observation of natural phenomena, had spent the last seventy-two hours reading a document that grew longer with each pass. It was a property development agreement, drafted by a consortium that called itself the Northern Improvement Company, and it offered to purchase the Blackwell estate at a price that was generous enough to seem kind but contained within it clauses that Arthur could barely comprehend.
The key clause was the Health Provision. Subsection 14C stated that the vendor, in conjunction with the transfer of property, must also ensure the continued provision of medical care for any named beneficiary residing upon the premises. Arthur had read that sentence twelve times and still could not parse its meaning. Was it a requirement that the seller maintain health coverage? A promise of ongoing treatment? Or something else entirely?
He had asked Mr. Thornbury this question, and the solicitor had shifted in his chair and produced a tissue and dabbed at his eyes with it, which Arthur found to be either an extraordinary display of professional sympathy or an elaborate evasion.
"The clause has always been there, Mr. Blackwell. Your father's father included it when he sold the adjoining parish lands in eighteen-ninety-two. It is a formality."
But Arthur had found a woman in the village who had read the clause differently. Her name was Miss Eleanor Price, and she was twenty-three years old and had been living in the Blackwell wing of the estate for eleven months, receiving treatment for a condition that the local doctor described as progressive and the London specialists described as untreatable. She was not a relative. She was not a servant. She was, according to the estate records, a "guest under medical guardianship."
Arthur did not know how this situation had come about. His father had died fourteen months earlier, and the family solicitor had been conspicuously unwilling to discuss matters that occurred before the death. The estate's accounts were a labyrinth of debts and obligations, and Eleanor Price's medical care was one of the threads that led to deeper and more confusing places.
"The clause means," Miss Price said, when he finally worked up the courage to ask her directly, "that if the estate changes hands, the new owners will be contractually bound to fund my treatment. Which is fortunate, because I have very little money of my own."
She was quite beautiful in a way that made Arthur uncomfortable, not because of any attraction but because of the particular quality of her stillness. She sat in the window seat of the library every afternoon, wrapped in a shawl and wrapped in silence, watching the moors with an expression that was neither resigned nor hopeful but something between the two. She had dark hair and dark eyes and a habit of tilting her head slightly when she listened, as though the wind itself might carry her information.
"It's not fortunate," Arthur said. "It's a clause in a contract. Contracts are about money."
"They can be about other things," she said, and returned to her window.
That night, for the first time, the signal did not come at two fourteen. It came at two forty-seven, and the voice was different. It spoke the same six words but with a different emphasis, and when Arthur listened to the recording in the morning, he realised that the emphasis fell on a different syllable than before. The signal was changing. Or someone was changing it.
He spent the afternoon in the village library, researching the Northern Improvement Company. What he found was not reassuring. The company was a relatively recent creation, registered only four years before, but it had already acquired seven properties in northern England, and in every case, the previous owners had been compelled to sell under circumstances that were legally impeccable and morally questionable. The company specialised in finding obscure clauses in old property agreements and using them as leverage to acquire assets at below-market prices.
And every case, Arthur discovered with growing alarm, involved a beneficiary clause. A named individual residing on the property, usually someone who was dependent, vulnerable, or otherwise unable to resist. The new owners would honour the clause—technically—but they would interpret it narrowly, and the beneficiary would find that their care was adequate but never adequate enough.
It was a business model. Cruel, meticulous, and entirely legal.
Arthur returned to the estate as the sun was setting, and he found a letter from his sister waiting for him. Lady Catherine Blackwell, who lived in London with her husband, had been visiting less frequently since the father's death. The letter was brief and contained, in that particular English style of emotional withholding, a warning:
"Do not sign anything without consulting the family solicitor. And do not let yourself be hurried. There are people who would prefer you to believe that time is not on your side, but I assure you it is."
Arthur placed the letter on the desk beside the contract and sat down to read it once more, in the light that was now failing. He thought of Eleanor in the window seat, of her stillness and her tilt of the head, of the way she had looked at him when he asked her about the clause—as though she already knew what he would discover.
He thought of the signal, seventeen nights of static and six words in an unknown language, and he wondered, for the first time, whether some signals were meant to be received or meant to be answered.
He picked up his pen. The contract required a signature on page forty-seven, and beneath that signature, a confirmation of the beneficiary clause. He had until midnight on Friday.
Outside, the moor wind began to rise, rattling the old windows of the observatory, and Arthur Blackwell, who had spent his life observing the world from a distance, found himself at the centre of a story that was entirely his own.
He signed the first page, and then he put the pen down, and he sat there in the darkening room, listening to the wind and thinking about the six words on the recording, and understanding, perhaps too late, that the signal was not coming from the moors at all. It was coming from somewhere much closer. It was coming from inside the house.
