Mercy on the Bluff Part One The heat in Blairwell did not arrive so much as occupy, the way a tenant occupies a house that was never really theirs and then refuses to leave. By mid-July the Mississippi delta air was thick enough to drink, and Mabel Lane could taste it on her tongue every time she opened her mouth: iron and cotton dust and the sweet-rot smell of mud that had been baked by the sun until it cracked into pieces that looked like the skin of an old man's elbow. She was twenty-seven, built lean and hard like a fence post left in the ground too long, and she had spent every day of those twenty-seven years in Blairwell, which was a town that sat on a bluff above the river like a man who had arrived late to a party and was trying to look like he belonged. Ruth had been twenty-one. Beautiful in the way that beauty is beautiful in small towns, which is to say: it is noticed but never confirmed, spoken about but never praised to the person's face, a fact about the world like the weather that everyone acknowledges but nobody claims responsibility for. Ruth had jumped from the old pumping station three years ago, on a night so hot that even the mosquitoes had stopped working and surrendered to the air. The coroner called it suicide. The town called it tragedy. Mabel called it a lie, because she had seen Ruth three hours before she died, and Ruth had not been sad. She had been excited. She had told Mabel that she had found something, something that changed everything, and she had said it in a voice that Mabel recognised now as the voice of someone standing at the edge of something she could not see. The last person to see Ruth alive was Rivers Munroe, or so the whispers said. The Munroe cotton empire had dominated this stretch of river for a century, and when cotton died as a currency the Munroes had converted their wealth into influence, and Jacob Munroe, Rivers' father, had become a man who was both preacher and politician, a man whose word in Blairwell carried more weight than the law because the law was something you paid for and Jacob Munroe's word was something you lived inside. Mabel did not believe in ghosts. She believed in the way the townspeople looked at her when she walked down Main Street, the way their eyes flicked away at exactly the moment she caught them, the way their mouths tightened the way mouths tighten when they are holding back a word that would change the shape of your life if you let it out. Part Two The Last Stop was a gas station and diner that sat on Highway 61 like a sentence that someone had started writing and then forgot to finish. Morton Blackwell had bought it three years ago, when he came back from Germany with a leg that did not work right and a mind that did not work at all, and he had run it ever since as a man runs a prayer: mechanically, without expectation, with the understanding that the act itself is the only point. Mabel found him behind the counter pouring coffee into a cup that already had coffee in it, which was the kind of inefficiency that suggested a man who had stopped trying to be useful and was only trying to be busy. He was thirty-four, tall in a way that suggested he had once been athletic and had then become athletic in a different direction, the way a tree grows toward the light even when the light is coming from the wrong side of the house. His right leg was stiff, held at an angle that made him walk with a slight drag, and his face was the colour of coffee that had been sitting on the burner too long. "You are the Lane girl," he said, not looking up from the coffee pot. "I am Mabel Lane." "Everyone in Blairwell knows your name. It is the only thing about it that people know." She set a jar of pickles on the counter. "I need to ask you something." "I am not the person you think I am." "Then who are you?" He looked at her then, and his eyes were the colour of the Mississippi on a day when the river is trying to tell you something but you do not have the language to understand it. "I am a man who was sent to fight a war that I did not understand and came back to a town that did not want me and bought a gas station because it was the only thing that did not ask me questions." "I have questions," she said. "About Ruth." His face did not change. His face had stopped changing somewhere around the time he left for Europe, and what remained was a mask of the sort that veterans wear not for others but for themselves, a surface that questions slide off like rain off a tin roof. "There is nothing to know," he said. "There is always something to know," she said. "It is the only thing that is always there." He poured the coffee into the cup, which was full, and coffee ran onto the counter and dripped onto the floor, and he did not stop pouring until the pot was empty, which was the kind of action that said more than any word could: I am trying to be useful and I cannot manage it and I am angry about that. "Help me run this place," he said suddenly. "Kitchen work. You cook. I hear you cook. You cook for your mother, and your mother cooks for herself, which means you cook for two households, which means you know how to work in a kitchen without complaining about it. Help me here, and I will help you with Ruth." She stared at him. "That is your proposition? I work for you and you investigate my sister's death?" "I do not investigate. I know people. People in Blairwell talk to me because I am not a threat. I am a broken soldier running a gas station. Nobody fears a man with a bad leg and a bottle in his hand. But they talk to me. I will use that." "And what do I get besides the knowledge?" "Half the revenue from the diner. A room in the back. A bed that does not smell like other people's desperation." She thought of her mother's house, which was a small frame house at the edge of town that leaned slightly to the left the way all old houses in Blairwell leaned, as if the town itself was tired of standing straight. She thought of cooking for her mother every night, of the way her mother's silence at the dinner table was not peace but the absence of anything worth saying. She thought of Ruth's body lying in that pumping station, and of the coroner's verdict that sat in the town record like a stone at the bottom of a well. "Fine," she said. "But we do this my way." Part Three The investigation was slow in the way that investigations are slow in small towns, where time moves like molasses through a crack in a jar. Mabel worked in the kitchen of The Last Stop from dawn until two in the afternoon, cooking biscuits and gravy and fried chicken and sweet potato pie, while Morton worked the front, pouring coffee and filling tanks and listening to the men who came in to complain about the weather and the government and the people who lived on the other side of the river. Between the cooking and the listening, Morton gathered fragments of information the way a man gathers driftwood on a beach: not by searching for it but by standing still long enough for it to arrive. Big Delphine was the first fragment. She was sixty-eight, Black, and the keeper of every secret in Blairwell that had ever been whispered within earshot of her porch. She sat on her porch every afternoon with a glass of sweet tea and a mouth that moved constantly, either praying or talking to people who were not there or both. "She knew," Delphine said, without preamble, on the third day Mabel brought her a plate of food wrapped in newspaper. "Ruth knew. She came to me once, in the spring before she died, and she sat on my porch just like you are sitting, and she said, 'Big Mama, I found something about the Munroes, and I do not know if I should tell anyone.' And I said, 'Child, knowing is not the same as telling. Sometimes knowing is its own kind of courage.' She nodded, and she left, and I never saw her alive again." Morton stood behind Mabel on the porch, listening in the way that men with bad legs listen: still, patient, present but invisible. "What did Ruth find?" Mabel asked. Delphine's eyes went to the river, where the sun was setting in a way that made the water look like it was bleeding. "I do not know. She did not tell me. But I do know this: Jacob Munroe's family is not what the town thinks it is. The Munroes are not just cotton people. They are blood people. There is a girl, not Ruth, another girl, who disappeared ten years ago, and nobody in this town will speak her name because her name is mixed, and in Blairwell mixed means dangerous, and dangerous means you disappear." Mabel felt something cold move through her stomach. "You are saying Ruth found out about another disappearance." "I am saying that Ruth was not the first person in Blairwell to disappear because she knew too much. She will not be the last." The second fragment came from Morton's own past, from the war he had fought and the men he had fought with and the things he had seen in a landscape that was not this one but was the same. He wrote a letter in the back room of The Last Stop, by the light of a single bulb that buzzed like an insect trapped in a jar, and the letter was addressed to a man he had served with, a man who had stayed in the military and climbed the ladder of a profession that Morton had stepped off of three years ago and could not find his way back to. The letter's reply came fourteen days later, in an envelope that Morton slid across the counter to Mabel while she was wiping it down with a cloth that was dirtier than the surface it touched. The letter was short. It said: The Munroes have a pattern. It always starts with a girl who knows too much. It always ends with a disappearance that the town decides was a choice. I am sorry. I wish I could do more. Mabel read the letter twice and then put it in her apron pocket, where it sat next to the memory of Ruth's voice saying: I found something that changes everything. Part Four The confrontation was not a confrontation so much as a collapsing, the way a house collapses when the foundation has been eaten by termites for long enough that the structure knows it is dead but has not yet fallen. It happened in the Munroe cotton warehouse, which still stood even though cotton had not been profitable for twenty years, a monument to a way of life that the town refused to bury. Jacob Munroe was inside when Mabel and Morton arrived, and he was not alone. Miss Cora Lee was there, and two men who were not men but were the kind of presence that men in Blairwell carry: the presence of people who have been told since childhood that the world exists for them and who have never been corrected. Jacob Munroe was fifty-two, and his face had the particular expression of men who have spent their lives being believed without earning it, a expression that is not arrogance so much as the habit of certainty. He looked at Mabel and Morton and said, "You are not welcome here." "I am here about Ruth Lane," Mabel said. "That girl made choices," Cora Lee said from the shadows, and her voice was the sound of a door closing in a house where someone had died and nobody had told the neighbours. "I am here about the truth," Mabel said. "Which is different from choices." Jacob Munroe looked at her for a long time, and in that time Mabel saw something in his face that was not guilt but its cousin, the thing that sits next to guilt at dinner and says the same things but with a different accent. "You think you want the truth," he said. "But the truth in Blairwell is not a gift. It is a weight. And you are not strong enough to carry it." Ruth appeared in the doorway behind Morton, and Mabel turned because her body turned before her mind did, because the body knows these things before the mind is ready, and she saw Ruth alive and breathing and standing in the doorway of a cotton warehouse in a town that had declared her dead and moved on, and she understood then that the pumping station had not been a suicide and it had not been a murder and it had not been any of the clean things that the coroner had written on the form. It had been a choice. Ruth had chosen to disappear because the truth was too heavy for one person to carry, and the town of Blairwell was a place where truth was treated like a disease and the people who carried it were quarantined by silence. Ruth looked at Mabel, and her face was older than it should have been for someone who had been missing for three years, older in the way that people are older when they have carried something that was not theirs to carry and decided to carry it anyway. "I am sorry," Ruth said. And then: "I am not sorry." Morton's hand found Mabel's shoulder, and his hand was heavy and warm and did not shake the way his leg did, and in that touch Mabel found the only mercy that Blairwell had to offer: the knowledge that she would not carry this alone, that there was a man with a broken leg and a broken war and a gas station that nobody wanted who had chosen to stand beside her in a cotton warehouse with a man whose name was a lie and a girl who had been dead and was not dead and was neither and both, and that was enough.
