What the Rot Remembers
ACT I: THE TABLE FOR FOUR
The table was set for four every morning at exactly seven o'clock, rain or shine or whatever passed for weather in the Mississippi valley in the autumn of 1932. Four chairs. Four plates of white china that had once belonged to Celia Beauregard's grandmother. Four glasses. Four silver forks that had been polished until they were thinner than a whisper.
Only two people sat at the table.
Celia Beauregard, who set the table. And Eleanor, who watched.
"More butter, dear?" Celia asked, spreading an impossible thinness of butter across a slice of bread that was already too thick. The bread was homemade—Celia still had a working oven, though they used almost all the flour for bread and almost none for anything else. It was dense and slightly sour and the best thing Eleanor had ever tasted.
"No, thank you, Mama," Eleanor said. She did not take the bread. She never did.
"Eat, dear. You're too thin. The neighbours will talk."
"The neighbours have nothing else to talk about."
Celia's smile did not falter. It was a smile that had been practised for fifty years—the smile of a Southern lady who has lost everything except her manners and intends to keep those. "The neighbours notice everything. That's their gift and their curse."
Eleanor looked around the dining room. The wallpaper was peeling in the corners, revealing the lath and plaster beneath like exposed ribs. The chandelier—real crystal, inherited from Beauregard's great-uncle—had three missing prisms and cast a broken light across the room that made everything look slightly distorted, slightly wrong. The heavy oak sideboard held the silver service: plates, platters, gravy boats, all of it engraved with the Beauregard family crest—a magnolia in bloom.
Magnolia Hall was named for the flowers that had once covered the grounds. Now the magnolia trees were dead, their branches black and skeletal against the grey sky, and the grounds were overgrown with weeds and wild vines that crept up the walls like green fingers trying to pull the house back into the earth.
After breakfast—which consisted of bread and a single egg that Celia divided between them because one egg was enough for two people who used to have a kitchen full of ingredients—the routine began.
Eleanor was expected to dress in the dress Celia had chosen for her (always modest, always slightly outdated, always the colour of faded dignity), comb her hair until it lay flat and obedient, and walk in the garden for one hour before noon. Not to work in the garden. Never to work in the garden. The Beauregard daughters did not work in gardens. They walked in them.
"It's the doing," Celia explained once, when Eleanor had asked if they could at least pick up the fallen magnolia blossoms from the driveway. "The doing makes it common. We are not common, Eleanor. We are Beauregards."
"What are Beauregards, in 1932?" Eleanor asked, before she could stop herself.
Celia's smile tightened at the edges. "We are what we have always been. That is more than most people can say."
Eleanor went into the garden anyway. Not for the walk—though the walk was required—but for the magnolia roots. Beneath the dead trees, the roots had begun to rot, and from the rot came something else: mushrooms. Small, purple-cap mushrooms with white spots that grew in clusters around the base of the roots. Fly agaric. Celia harvested them in the autumn, dried them, and steeped them in tea.
"Herbal tea," Celia called it. "Good for the nerves. Good for sleep."
Eleanor drank it every night. She did not know why she drank it. It made the world feel soft at the edges, like looking through frosted glass. It made the silence of the house feel less like absence and more like presence. It made the voice in her head that asked "what are you doing here" feel quieter, if not silent.
ACT II: THE DOCTOR
Dr. Caleb Hunt arrived on a Wednesday, wrapped in a coat that was too thin for the weather and carrying a medical bag that was definitely second-hand. He was thirty-seven, tall and lean, with a face that had been handsome before the poverty and the work had carved lines into it. He was from Boston, or at least he had been once, before he was "suspended" from his position at Massachusetts General for "disseminating information contrary to the interests of pharmaceutical partners."
Eleanor met him at the door. He was there to see Celia, who had been complaining of "dizziness and fatigue" for the past month. But he noticed Eleanor first—not her beauty, though she was beautiful in the way that someone who is slowly disappearing is beautiful—but the way she stood in the doorway, perfectly still, watching him with dark eyes that saw too much.
"Miss Beauregard," he said. "Your mother mentioned you'd be in."
"She didn't mention me," Eleanor said. "She mentioned me to you, perhaps."
Caleb smiled faintly. "I'm Dr. Hunt. I've been serving this county for eighteen months, and I have to say: the Beauregard name still opens more doors than any other in this town."
"Even when there's nothing inside the doors?"
"Especially when there's nothing inside."
He examined Celia in the parlour, where she sat wrapped in a shawl and sipping tea that Caleb knew—just from the smell in the house—was heavily laced with something herbal. Celia was elegant to the end, even in illness: her hair was pinned, her dress was pressed, her hands were folded neatly in her lap as if she were waiting for guests rather than a doctor.
Caleb listened to her heart. He checked her pulse. He asked her about her symptoms. He asked about her diet. He asked about her sleep.
"Poor," Celia admitted. "The nights are long, and the—thoughts."
"Thoughts about what?"
Celia smiled that smile. "About the past. About how things used to be. It's a dangerous habit, thinking about how things used to be."
After the examination, Caleb asked to speak with Eleanor in the kitchen. She was washing dishes—actually washing them, which was something she did in secret, because the idea of a Beauregard woman washing her own dishes was simply unthinkable.
"What are you doing?" Caleb asked, not unkindly.
"Washing dishes."
"Miss Beauregard, you don't have to—"
"I know I don't have to. But someone has to." She dried a plate and put it on the rack. The plate was chipped at the rim. "My mother doesn't know I do this."
"She wouldn't approve."
"No. She wouldn't."
Caleb watched her for a moment. He had seen this before—not in Boston, where people hired help for everything, but in the towns he had served during his army years. Young women who were carrying the weight of a family's collapsed expectations on shoulders that were not built for it.
"I'm going to examine you," he said.
Eleanor paused. "Me?"
"You look like you're falling apart. Let me check."
She let him. He listened to her heart. It was racing. He checked her eyes. Her pupils were dilated, even in the dim kitchen light. He asked her when she last ate a proper meal. She said she wasn't sure. He asked about her sleep.
"Fine," she said. But her eyes told a different story.
"Miss Beauregard," he said quietly. "Your pupils are dilated. You're malnourished. And your heart is beating like a frightened bird. Are you taking anything? Any medicines? Any—herbal remedies?"
"My mother makes tea," Eleanor said. "Every night."
"What kind?"
"Herbal. She calls it tea. It helps her sleep. It helps me sleep."
Caleb's expression darkened. "Can I see the herbs?"
Eleanor hesitated. Then she went to the cupboard and brought out a small paper packet. Inside were dried mushroom pieces—purple caps with white spots. Fly agaric. Amanita muscaria.
Caleb felt something cold settle in his stomach. "Where did these come from?"
"The magnolia trees. In the garden."
"Your mother is harvesting hallucinogenic mushrooms and giving them to you every night."
Eleanor's face went very still. "She calls it herbal tea."
ACT III: THE ROOTS
The truth came out slowly, like rot moving through wood from the inside.
Caleb asked to speak with Celia alone. Eleanor was "walking in the garden," which meant standing beneath the dead magnolia trees while the vines crept higher up the walls of the house. She watched a spider weave a web in the corner of the porch and thought: if a spider can build something beautiful from nothing, why can't I?
Inside the house, Caleb and Celia spoke for forty-seven minutes. Eleanor did not hear the words—she was too far away—but she saw the shape of Celia's body in the parlour window: rigid, then collapsing, then rigid again.
When Eleanor came back inside, Caleb was gone. Celia was sitting at the kitchen table, the paper packet of mushrooms in front of her, her hands folded over it as if it were a child's hand.
"You told him," she said. It was not a question.
"He was going to find out."
"He was going to find out what? That I love my daughter? That I protect her from a world that would crush her if it knew how fragile she is?"
"You're poisoning her."
"I am SAVING her. Do you know what happens when she's awake? Really awake? She sees the rot. She sees the cracked wallpaper and the dead trees and the empty larder and the fact that we are Beauregards and we are NOTHING. And she can't—she can't carry that. So I give her the tea, and the tea makes it soft, and soft is survivable."
"Soft is a lie."
"Soft is kind."
Eleanor stood in the doorway and listened to her mother argue with the truth, the way one argues with a unwanted guest—politely, persistently, and with the hope that eventually they will leave.
That night, Eleanor sat at her dressing table and looked at her reflection in the cracked mirror. She was twenty-six years old, and she looked forty. Her skin was pale and drawn. Her eyes were too large for her face, like a bird's eyes—always watching, always afraid. Her hair was thinning slightly at the temples, a side effect of malnutrition that Celia had not yet noticed or chosen not to notice.
She thought of Caleb's face when he had examined her: the concern, the anger, the helplessness. A man who had come to save people for a living and had found, in the Beauregard house, something he could not fix with medicine or money or good intentions.
She thought of the tea. She thought of the mushrooms. She thought of the way the tea made the world feel soft and manageable and small.
She had been drinking it for three years. Three years of slow, gentle erosion. Three years of waking up and not quite knowing where she was, or why she was there, or what she was supposed to do with the pieces of her life that were still intact.
She had been drinking it for three years. And every night, deep down inside her, a small and fierce and exhausted voice had been asking the same question: What are you doing?
Not what is Mother doing. Not what has been done to you. What are YOU doing?
And for three years, she had had no answer.
ACT IV: THE STAIN
She woke up on the garden path. The morning mist was rising off the grass like steam from a dying fire. The dead magnolia branches above her were stark against the grey sky, beautiful and terrible in their honesty.
She had been walking. She must have gone out in the night—had she sleepwalked, as she sometimes did when the tea was strong? Had she walked to the garden and fallen among the roots and the mushrooms and the vines that were slowly pulling the house into the earth?
She lay there for a long time, staring up at the branches. A bird called somewhere in the distance—a wood thrush, with its flute-like song that sounded like something beautiful growing out of something broken.
Miss Mary came to visit that afternoon. She was forty-five, dark-skinned and sharp-featured, with hair that was always perfectly coiled and a dress that was always perfectly pressed. She taught at the one-room schoolhouse in the black section of town, and she had been, for the past two years, the only person in this entire county who treated Eleanor Beauregard like a human being rather than a relic.
"I brought you something," Miss Mary said, setting a small basket on the kitchen table. Inside was a tin of biscuits—real biscuits, made with real flour and real butter—and a book: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, by Harriet Jacobs.
"I thought you might like this," Miss Mary said. "It's about a woman who was trapped in a house that wasn't hers, doing things she didn't choose, for people who called it love while they destroyed her. She found a way out. Not a clean way. Not a happy way. But a way."
Eleanor held the book and felt something shift inside her chest—something small and hard and sharp, like a seed cracking open.
"Thank you," she said.
"Did Dr. Hunt talk to you?"
"Yes."
"And?"
"And he found the mushrooms."
Miss Mary was quiet for a long moment. "And what did you decide?"
Eleanor looked at the book in her hands. She looked at the kitchen—chipped plates, thin butter, the silver service that had once been worth more than most people in this county would earn in a lifetime. She looked at the window, through which she could see Magnolia Hall in all its slow, dignified decay.
She thought of her mother, sitting at the kitchen table with the packet of mushrooms in front of her, arguing with the truth the way only a woman who has spent her life lying to herself can argue: with grace, and conviction, and a terrible, beautiful love.
"I decided," Eleanor said slowly, "that I am done drinking the tea."
Miss Mary smiled. It was a small smile, but it was real. "That's a start."
"I don't know what comes next. I don't know how to live without the tea. I don't know how to be a Beauregard without the lies." Eleanor's voice was steady, but her hands were shaking. "But I know that I can't keep drinking it. I know that the rot is inside me now, and the tea isn't hiding it anymore. It's spreading."
Miss Mary reached across the table and took Eleanor's hand. Her skin was warm and calloused and real. "Then we'll figure it out. You and me. Maybe Dr. Hunt too, if you can tolerate his northern accent."
Eleanor laughed. It was the first time she had laughed in months. Maybe in years. It felt strange—like using a muscle that had atrophied from disuse. But it felt good. It felt like the beginning of something.
That evening, Eleanor sat at the kitchen table and watched her mother prepare the herbal tea. Celia moved with the same graceful routine she had performed every night for three years: measure the dried mushrooms, pour the hot water, wait, stir, serve.
"Would you like some, dear?" Celia asked, holding out the cup.
Eleanor looked at her mother—at the lines around her eyes, the tension in her hands, the desperate, fragile love that was behind every gesture. She saw the woman who had raised her alone after her father left, who had held onto the fantasy of the Beauregard name when there was nothing else left to hold onto, who had given her daughter a life that was beautiful and suffocating and entirely her own creation.
"No, Mama," Eleanor said gently. "I don't want any tonight."
Celia's hand trembled. Just slightly. But Eleanor saw it.
"Then—then I'll drink it myself," Celia said.
"That's alright," Eleanor said. "You can keep it. For yourself."
She stood up, picked up Miss Mary's book, and walked out of the kitchen. She did not look back. She walked into the garden, past the dead magnolia trees, past the mushrooms growing in the rot, to the place where the vines were thickest. She sat down among them, pressed her back against the trunk of the largest tree, and opened the book.
The vine thorns pricked her arms. A drop of blood appeared on her forearm, bright red against the grey twilight. She did not wipe it away. She let it stain her skin the way the rot had stained the wood—naturally, inevitably, as part of the process of something old giving way to something new.
She began to read. And as she read, she thought: this is what it means to be alive. Not soft. Not safe. Not protected from the rot. But present. Present in the decay. Present in the thorns. Present in the blood and the mushrooms and the slow, inevitable return of everything to the earth from which it came.
She was Eleanor Beauregard. She was twenty-six years old. She was sitting in a garden that was dying, in a house that was rotting, in a state that had forgotten her, in a century that had forgotten everyone like her.
But she was present. And for tonight, that was enough.
