Act I
Eleanor Vance stood on the platform at Grand Central Terminal on a Monday in September, 1922, with a one-way ticket to Prague in her handbag and a trunk that contained exactly three changes of clothing and her father's fountain pen. With the additional funds, Eleanor moved the operation into a proper building—a three-story structure on Wenceslas Square that housed the publishing house on the ground floor, the reading rooms on the second, and a small hotel on the third for visiting writers and scholars. She invited Šmíd and his allies to a meeting at the Wenceslas Square building. She listened to their arguments for three hours. They were right about almost everything.
By the end of the year, the publishing house had been restructured. Eleanor retained the financial oversight—she was, she acknowledged to herself, better at numbers than at literary theory—but the editorial decisions were made by a Czech committee chaired by Šmíd himself. She was offered a seat but declined, on the grounds that her presence would distort the committee's deliberations. She was present only as a funder, not a director, and she made this distinction clear in writing to every person who had ever received a letter from her.
Act IV
In the autumn of 1927, five years after she had arrived in Prague with a one-way ticket and three changes of clothing, Eleanor returned to New York.
She did not return to J.P. Morgan. She did not return to her father's house. She went instead to a small apartment on Washington Square and sat at a desk that she had bought secondhand from a woman who had given up on her own ambitions and sold her typewriter to pay rent.
She wrote a letter to Petra in Prague and told her that she was staying in America for a while, that she might return, that she might not. She enclosed a check that would fund the Prague operation for another year without her having to think about credit lines or correspondents in London.
Then she sat at her desk and opened a fresh notebook and wrote a single sentence, in a hand that was no longer stiff but had acquired a quality of deliberation that her father might have recognized:
"The culture of a people is not what they inherit. It is what they choose to keep."
