The Calloway Land

The kudzu had won. That was the first thing Jeb Calloway noticed when he pulled his truck up to the Calloway property off Route 82, seventy miles south of Jackson. The second thing he noticed was that the house had lost a section of its southern porch and the third was that the cypress trees at the edge of the clearing looked like they were holding their breath.

He sat in the truck for a while, listening to the insects. Mississippi in October was still loud—cicadas, crickets, something larger that Jeb could not identify and did not try to. He had spent three years in Korea listening to things that could not be identified by name because they did not have names. Insects were almost a relief.

He got out of the truck and walked to the house. The front door was locked, which surprised him. He had expected it to be open, or at least to fall away when he pushed. But it held. He went around to the back, found a window that was stuck but yieldable, and worked it open with enough force that he expected the frame to split. It didn't. The wood was old but not rotten. That was something.

Inside, the house smelled like damp and memory. Jeb had last lived here from the age of six to sixteen. His mother had died when he was eight—pneumonia, the doctor said, but Jeb knew the truth: the doctor couldn't afford to come to the house because her car had broken down and her husband was out of work and she knew that going to the Calloway place meant being seen by people who might ask questions and she had spent her entire life avoiding questions.

Jeb had been given to his Uncle Homer after the funeral. Homer was his mother's older brother, a man who had never married and never left the Delta and who lived in this house, which had belonged to his grandfather and his grandfather's father before him, in a line of Calloway men who had grown cotton and smoked tobacco and told stories about the time before the war that Jeb knew were not entirely true but which he listened to anyway because they were all he had.

Homer was a quiet man. Not silent—he talked when he needed to, and he talked to Jeb with a gentleness that surprised Jeb, who had spent the first two weeks expecting anger or indifference or the kind of reluctant tolerance that people reserve for obligations they didn't ask for. But Homer was gentle. He cooked for Jeb. He took him to church on Sundays (though Jeb never felt comfortable in church anymore, not after his mother's funeral, when the preacher had talked about the Rapture and Jeb had wondered why the Rapture didn't come for his mother). He taught Jeb to fish and to shoot and to identify tracks in the mud.

And in the evenings, after the work was done and the heat had broken and the air was thick enough to chew, Homer would sit on the porch and tell Jeb stories about the land. Not stories about people—about the land itself. How it remembered things. How the soil had layers, like a book, and if you knew how to read them, you could tell what had happened here: who had lived, what they had planted, what they had buried.

"When I was your age," Homer said one night, "I found something in the woods. Something that fell from the sky. I didn't tell nobody about it. Not because it was dangerous. But because nobody would have believed me."

"What was it?" Jeb had asked.

Homer had looked at him for a long time. "It was a question," he said. "And questions are more dangerous than answers."

Jeb had forgotten that conversation until he was standing in the kitchen of the house he had left sixteen years ago, holding a flashlight and looking at a room full of dust and broken chairs, and it came back to him with the force of something physical, like a hand on his shoulder.

He found the kitchen mostly intact. A table, two chairs, a cast-iron stove that was rusted but not destroyed, a shelf with empty jars. He opened the refrigerator—it was dead, unplugged for years—and found nothing. He opened the cupboards and found a box of crackers that had become one solid block and a can of peaches that had swollen to twice its normal size and was slowly leaking sticky amber fluid onto the shelf.

He ate a cracker out of the box and sat at the table and thought about what to do.

The agribusiness company had made an offer: $400 an acre for the 400 acres. $160,000. It was more money than the Calloway land had ever been worth, which was the point. The land was marginal—too close to the river for reliable cotton, too far from town for convenient shipping. It had been held together for generations by sharecroppers who worked it for subsistence and by Homer's stubborn refusal to sell. But the sharecroppers were gone, migrated north or died, and Homer was gone too, and now it was Jeb's problem.

Jeb's problem was that he did not want to sell. Not because of sentiment—he was not a sentimental man. He had seen too much of the world, in Korea and in the years after, to believe that land or family or any of the things people talked about like they were sacred were actually sacred. But something about this land, this particular patch of Delta earth, felt like the last thing he had that was his. If he sold it, he would have money and nothing else. If he kept it, he would have land and nothing else, but at least the nothing else would be attached to something.

He spent the next week making repairs. He replaced the window frame. He patched the roof with tar paper from a store in Yazoo City. He cleared the kudzu from the front of the house, which meant pulling it by the roots for two days straight, his hands raw and bleeding, the vines fighting back with the desperate tenacity of something that knows it will die if it doesn't hold on.

On the fifth day, in the attic, behind a section of drywall that had collapsed during last winter's storm, he found the box.

It was metal, locked, and approximately two feet long. Jeb pried it open with a crowbar he had found in the shed, and the lock gave with a sound like a gunshot that echoed through the empty house.

Inside, he found three things. A journal, written in Homer's block letters. A stack of letters addressed to "My Dearest Jeb," dated between 1946 and 1948, never mailed. And a notebook in a script that Jeb did not recognize.

He took the notebook to Mamie Ruth.

Mamie Ruth lived in a shack two miles from the Calloway place, at the end of a road that was more dirt track than road, past the last remaining Black sharecropper family—the Washingtons, who had been working Deacon Washington's patch of land for as long as anyone could remember. Mamie Ruth's shack was small but clean, and the inside smelled of herbs and woodsmoke and something Jeb could not identify but recognized as the smell of a woman who has lived alone for a very long time and is not afraid of it.

She was blind, as Jeb knew. Both eyes clouded white, like frosted glass. But she turned her head toward him when he entered, as if she could see him in some way that had nothing to do with eyesight.

"Jeb Calloway," she said. "I wondered when you'd come back."

"How do you know my name?" he asked.

She smiled. "The land told me."

He sat on the single chair and showed her the notebook. She reached out and touched the cover with her fingers, tracing the embossed pattern, and then she nodded.

"Homer brought this to me once," she said. "He wanted me to look at it. I told him I couldn't read it. But I could feel it. It was heavy."

"How?" Jeb asked.

"The way a question feels," she said. "Heavy."

Jeb showed the notebook to Dr. Nguyen when he drove into Youngstown the next week for groceries. Dr. Nguyen was a physician at the health center and a woman who did not have time for Jeb's occasional visits about his blood pressure (which was fine, she told him, stop wasting her time) but who made time for the notebook because, as she said, "I like dead languages. They're the only honest ones."

She spent twenty minutes looking at it and then shook her head. "I can't identify this. It's not Greek, not Latin, not anything in my database. It might be proto-anything. Jeb, this could be something important. Or it could be something crazy. I can't tell the difference."

"Can you ask someone?" Jeb asked.

"Someone at Youngstown State?" she said. "I can try. But they'll tell you what I told you: it's a language, and it's old, and you should probably stop carrying it around in your pickup truck where it can get wet."

Jeb did stop carrying it around. He put it in the locked box in the attic and tried to forget about it. But he couldn't. The notebook was a question, and Homer had said that questions were more dangerous than answers, and Jeb was a man who had spent his life trying not to ask questions, and now here was one sitting in his attic, waiting.

He followed Deacon Washington to the Sunflower River.

Deacon was a tall man, thin as a rail, with hands that were more callus than skin. He walked at a slow, steady pace, as if he had all the time in the world, which Jeb suspected he did—he was seventy-eight years old, he had nothing to be anywhere for, and he had spent his entire life understanding that the land operated on a timescale that had nothing to do with human urgency.

They reached the river at dusk. The water was brown and slow, reflecting the orange sky. The waterfall was small—a cascade of maybe ten feet over a limestone shelf—but it was enough to hide something behind it if you knew where to look.

Deacon stopped at the edge of the waterfall and pointed. "There," he said. "Behind the water."

Jeb pushed through the curtain of water and found the entrance: a narrow passage, maybe three feet wide, that opened into a cave approximately fifteen feet across. The cave was dry, warm, and filled with objects.

Not alien artifacts. Not UFO debris. Objects that spanned centuries and continents and cultures: a Native American ceremonial pipe, an African carved figure, a European silver chalice, a Filipino bamboo flute, a stack of manuscripts in languages Jeb recognized from his dreams and languages he did not, and a notebook in Homer's handwriting.

He sat on the cave floor and read the notebook by flashlight. It described, in Homer's careful block letters, an experiment that had taken place in 1947. Homer had invited a group of people to the plantation—people who were excluded from the dominant culture because of their race, their religion, their origins, their disability. A Black shaman from Louisiana. A Cherokee elder. A Jewish Holocaust survivor. A Filipino immigrant. They had not come to study aliens. They had come to share knowledge. Healing knowledge. Spiritual knowledge. Ways of understanding the world that each tradition held and that the white world around them rejected as superstition or witchcraft or madness.

Homer had believed that these knowledge systems, woven together, could create something new and powerful. Something that could heal people—not just their bodies, but their spirits, their connections to each other and to the land.

The final entry read: We have done what we came to do. The fire is lit. May God help those who find it.

Jeb sat in the cave for a long time. When he emerged, the sky was dark and the stars were out, thick and bright in a way that city people never saw. He looked up and felt, for the first time in his life, the exact sensation Homer had described: not falling from the sky, but rising from the earth.

He went back to the Calloway place. He burned the notebooks in the rusted barrel behind the house. The flames were orange in the gray evening. He sat on the porch and watched them and drank a beer and listened to the insects.

And when the last page was ash, he went inside, closed the door, and slept.
