The Three Questions
The telescope was my life's work. Fifteen years of grinding lenses, calculating optics, building mounts. A multi-element array of sixty-four lenses, each ground to a precision of three microns, aligned with a tolerance of less than one degree. It was, by any measure, the most sophisticated optical instrument ever built in Europe.
And it showed me things that the Church would call heresy.
My name is Fra Giovanni da Bologna. I am thirty-eight years old. I am a friar of the Order of Preachers—a Dominican. And I am a heretic, whether I wish to be or not, because I have seen things that contradict the teachings of the Church.
Jupiter has moons. Four of them, orbiting the planet. This means that not everything orbits the Earth. The geocentric model is wrong.
The Moon has craters and mountains. It is not a perfect sphere, as Aristotle taught. It is a world—imperfect, like Earth.
And on the night of November 17th, 1348, I saw a signal.
It was a pulse of light from a star in the constellation of Lyra. The pulse was not random. It was a sequence: one flash, two flashes, three flashes, five flashes, eight flashes. Prime numbers. The Fibonacci sequence. Something intelligent was sending this signal. Something distant. Something aware.
I recorded the sequence in my journal. I calculated the source: a star approximately one hundred and twenty light-years from Earth. Whoever—or whatever—sent this signal did so approximately one hundred and twenty years ago. The signal has been traveling through space since before I was born.
I brought my findings to the Rector of Padua University. He was a wise man, but he was also a man who feared the Inquisition. He told me to destroy my notes.
"I cannot," I said.
"Then you are a dead man," he said.
I did not destroy my notes. Instead, I did something foolish: I built a mirror array capable of reflecting light back toward the source. If a civilization had gone to the trouble of sending us a prime number sequence, they would understand a reply in the same language.
I sent the reply. One flash. Two flashes. Three flashes. Five flashes. Eight flashes.
Three days later, the signal came back. But this time, it was not a light pulse. It was a message—encoded in the frequency of the light, containing mathematical data that my lenses translated into a form my mind could understand.
The message was simple: "You are the first civilization to see us. We are capable of answering your three ultimate questions. The cost: the destruction of your civilization. Do you accept?"
I stared at the words. Three questions. Three answers to the deepest mysteries of existence. And the cost would be the destruction of humanity.
I was not alone in this decision. I invited three people to my study: Brother Yusuf, an Arab astronomer who had fled the Mongol invasions; Dr. Rachel ben Asher, a Jewish physician who was one of the few women allowed to practice medicine in Europe; and Messer Marco Polo the Younger, a Venetian merchant whose family had traveled the Silk Road.
I told them about the signal. I told them about the offer. They were silent for a long time.
"Ask," said Brother Yusuf.
"No," said Dr. Rachel. "It is too dangerous. What if answering the questions triggers the destruction? What if we are being tricked?"
"They are not tricking us," I said. "The mathematics are clear. The signal is genuine. This is an advanced civilization—far beyond our own. They have the power to answer our questions, and they have the power to destroy us. They are offering us a choice."
Marco said: "If the choice is between ignorance and knowledge—even at the cost of our lives—which would you choose?"
Dr. Rachel did not answer.
I chose. I sent a reply: "I accept. I will ask three questions."
The response was immediate: "Your three questions will be answered. The answers will be transmitted via the same signal channel. The destruction mechanism will activate upon receipt of the third answer. You understand the terms?"
I understood. But understanding and accepting are different things.
The Inquisition arrived while I was preparing to receive the answers. They had discovered my telescope. They had discovered my notes. They had discovered my heresy.
I was arrested on a charge of "studying forbidden natural philosophy and communicating with alien intelligences." The second charge was technically not a crime—it had not been legislated against—but the Inquisition was creative.
In the courtroom, I faced the Inquisitor, a man named Fra Antonio who was my former student. He was twenty-five, ambitious, and terrified of thinking for himself.
"Fra Giovanni," he said, "recant your heresies. Destroy your telescope. Admit that you have been deceived by the Devil."
I looked at him. "The Devil would not send me prime numbers, Fra Antonio. The Devil would send me comfort."
The Inquisitor ordered me to be imprisoned. But before they could take me away, the signal came again.
The alien civilization—the "Watchers," as I began to call them—had observed the Inquisition's intervention. They sent a message to the Church: "Let the friar continue his research. Or we will close the channel permanently."
The Church was terrified. A message from outer space, delivered through a telescope, was something that even the Inquisition could not ignore. They released me—but under house arrest. I was allowed to continue my work, but I was watched.
And so, in my prison of stone and iron, I asked my three questions.
The first answer came first. I had asked: "Is there meaning in the universe?"
The answer: "There is no pre-given meaning. Meaning is created by each civilization as it evolves. The universe is indifferent. But indifference is not cruelty. Indifference is freedom."
The second answer: "Does God exist?"
The answer: "If by God you mean an all-knowing, all-powerful being who created the universe and cares about human affairs, then no. But if by God you mean the sum of all meaning created by all civilizations across all time—then yes, God exists. And God is still being formed."
The third answer: "What is the value of humanity?"
The answer: "Humanity's value lies in its vulnerability. Because humans know they will die, every choice they make is precious. A being that cannot die has no need for choice. A being that cannot suffer has no need for compassion. Your fragility is your greatness."
I received the third answer and then stopped.
My heart stopped.
I do not know if the alien civilization caused my death. I do not know if receiving the three answers was fatal, or if my heart simply gave out from the strain of eighteen months of imprisonment, fear, and intellectual exertion.
What I know is this: I died in my cell on December 3rd, 1348. The Black Death was sweeping through Europe. I was one of many who died that year. But my death was different from the others.
My journal survived. Brother Yusuf smuggled it out of Padua and sent it to a copyist in Florence. The journal was copied three times and spread through the universities of Europe. Newton saw it. Leibniz saw it. They called it "the notes of a mad friar" and filed them away.
But they read them. And when Newton developed his theory of gravity, he wrote in his notebook: "The universe is indifferent, but that is freedom, not cruelty."
He had read my journal.
I do not know if the universe has meaning. I do not know if God exists. But I know this: I chose to ask, and in asking, I found answers that changed the course of human history.
And that is enough.
