Variant 009: The Algorithm of Solitude (Enlightenment Satire)

The Academy of Rationality was the proudest achievement of the Age of Reason. Its goal was simple: to map every human emotion to a mathematical coordinate and thus eliminate the 'inefficiency' of passion.

Professor Alistair Finch was the Academy's most devoted disciple. He had successfully mapped 'Love' to a series of quadratic equations and 'Grief' to a logarithmic decay curve. He lived his life by the slide-rule, eating exactly 2,100 calories a day and sleeping in precise eight-hour increments.

"Passion is merely a failure of calculation," Finch would lecture his students. "Once we understand the geometry of the heart, we can finally achieve a state of perfect equilibrium."

The Academy's crowning project was the 'Universal Harmony Engine', a massive brass machine designed to calculate the optimal life path for every citizen. By inputting one's biological data and social standing, the Engine would output the exact career, spouse, and death date that would maximize the collective happiness of the state.

Finch was tasked with auditing the Engine's results. For years, the data was perfect. The citizens were content, the economy was stable, and the crime rate was zero. It was a triumph of reason.

Then, Finch discovered the 'Error of the Soul'.

He found a small group of citizens—the 'Irregulars'—whose lives completely defied the Engine's predictions. One man, a failed poet, was mathematically destined for misery but spent his days in a state of inexplicable joy. A woman, destined for a high-ranking administrative role, spent her time feeding stray cats in the slums and felt a profound sense of fulfillment.

Finch attempted to 'correct' the Irregulars. He applied the equations of love and the curves of grief, trying to force their lives back into the rational mold. But the more he calculated, the more the Irregulars thrived. Their 'inefficiency' was the source of their happiness.

The Board of the Academy grew concerned. They ordered Finch to 'neutralize' the Irregulars to prevent the contagion of irrationality from spreading.

Finch stood before the same people he had tried to fix. He looked at the poet, whose eyes were full of a light that no equation could capture. He looked at the woman, whose kindness was a variable that defied all logic.

In a moment of sudden, irrational clarity, Finch realized that the Engine wasn't calculating happiness; it was calculating obedience. The 'perfect equilibrium' was simply a fancy word for a living death.

Finch returned to the Academy and, instead of reporting his success, he introduced a single, tiny error into the Engine's core code: a variable for 'Unpredictable Wonder'.

The machine groaned, the brass gears shrieked, and the Universal Harmony Engine exploded in a shower of sparks and springs. As the alarms wailed and the Board panicked, Finch sat back in his chair and, for the first time in his life, did something completely illogical.

He laughed.
