The letter from her mother arrived on a Thursday, which was significant only because Mary Sullivan had learned over eighteen years that her mother communicated important things on Thursdays. Mondays were for complaints about the weather. Tuesdays were for checking in on Mary's work at the law firm. Wednesdays were for silence. Thursdays meant something needed to be said. The letter contained four words: We need to talk. Mary sat at her typing desk and stared at the envelope until the clerk, Mrs. Whitfield, tapped on her partition. "Miss Sullivan? You've been staring at that paper for twenty minutes. The Henderson brief isn't going to type itself." Mary picked up her pen. The letters on the page swam. She blinked and they settled. She had learned to type at thirty words per minute, and right now her hands were producing nothing at all. "I'm fine," she said, and this was not a lie. She was fine in the way that people are fine when they are holding together something that cannot hold together. She went home at five, walked the six blocks from the law firm to the Sullivan brownstone on Mott Street, and found her parents in the kitchen. Her mother had made meatloaf, which was a Thursday dinner, which was consistent with the letter. Her father sat at the table with a glass of beer and a newspaper he was not reading. "Sit down," Patrick Sullivan said, and his voice was not angry. That was worse. Mary sat. She folded her hands on the table. She was wearing her good dress, the navy one with the white collar, the one she wore for important meetings. This was not a meeting. It was something else. Margaret Sullivan reached across the table and took Mary's hand. Her fingers were rough from years of scrubbing and washing and working. Mary had these same hands. Or she had thought she had these same hands. "We have something to tell you," Margaret said. "And we have been trying to tell you for three days, and every time I start, your father clears his throat and I lose my nerve." "Just say it," Mary said. Patrick put the newspaper down. "Your mother and I... you are not..." He stopped. He tried again. "When you were born, there was... a mistake. At the hospital." Mary waited. She had expected something dramatic. This was not dramatic. This was a mistake. "A mistake?" she said. "Two babies," Margaret said. "Two mothers. The nurses were exhausted. It was a busy night. Your mother"—she looked at Patrick—"your mother came home and the baby she brought was not..." "The baby that came home was mine," Mary said. Patrick nodded. "Yes." "We tried. In the beginning, we tried. But the hospital has changed staff, records are... it was 1875, Mary. They didn't keep good records." Mary stood up. She walked to the sink. She looked at her hands under the faucet, at the knuckles and the tendons and the nails that she kept short because she typed all day and long nails were impractical. These hands were not her parents' hands. They were someone else's hands. They had typed someone else's letters, held someone else's child, belonged to a family that lived somewhere in a city she had never visited. "How long?" she asked, still looking at her hands. "Since the beginning," Patrick said. "Have you ever... wondered?" "We wondered every day," Margaret said. "But you were our daughter. You are our daughter. Blood or no blood." Mary dried her hands on a towel. She turned around and looked at her parents—her parents, the people who had taught her to read, who had saved every dime to buy her these clothes, who had fought with neighbors and principals and anyone who looked at them wrong because their daughter was sitting at their table. "Okay," she said. And then, because she was not a person who could stop at one thing: "Who was my real mother?" Margaret's face closed. Not in anger but in exhaustion. "Mary, please." "Please what? Please stop asking? Please pretend that this doesn't matter? I am sitting here and you are telling me that the person I am is not the person I am and you want me to just..." She stopped. She looked at the meatloaf on the table, at the cold vegetables, at the life that had been built on a foundation that was not what it seemed. "I need to think." She went to her room. She sat on the bed. She did not cry. She thought. The next morning, she went to work. She typed the Henderson brief. She produced forty-two words per minute, three points above her usual average. Mrs. Whitfield noticed but did not comment. That afternoon, while reorganizing the firm's filing cabinet, Mary noticed something. The firm handled probate cases. Probate cases involved birth records, marriage records, death records. Public records that anyone could access if they knew where to look. Mary looked at the filing cabinet. She looked at the keys on Mrs. Whitfield's desk. She picked one up and tried it in the bottom drawer. It opened. She spent the next three hours looking for the hospital where she was born. She found the ledger. She found her page. And on that page, in ink that had faded to brown, was the name of the woman who had given birth to her. Rose Connolly. Not a stranger. A Connolly. An Irish name. A name that existed in her world, in her city, in the same streets she walked every day. She looked up the address. It was in the Lower East Side, where the tenements were narrow and the families were large and the air smelled of boiled cabbage and coal smoke. Mary went there on her day off. She did not tell anyone where she was going. She took the streetcar downtown, transferred to a second streetcar, walked three blocks, and found the address: a tenement building with peeling paint and laundry hanging between the windows. She stood on the sidewalk and looked up. Six stories of windows, some open, some closed, some with faces pressed against the glass. Somewhere in there was a woman named Rose Connolly who had given birth to her and let her go. Mary climbed the stairs. She did not know what she would say. She knew only that she had to say something. The third floor. The third door. She knocked. A woman opened the door. She was young, maybe thirty, with dark hair and dark eyes and a baby on her hip. She looked at Mary with an expression of cautious curiosity. The kind of look you give someone who might be selling something or asking for something or both. "Yes?" the woman said. Mary opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. "I'm looking for a Rose Connolly," she said. The woman's expression changed. Not dramatically. A slight tightening around the eyes, a small movement of the jaw. Like a door closing halfway and then stopping. "What do you want with her?" the woman said. "My name is Mary Sullivan," Mary said. "And I think... I think I'm your daughter." The woman on the threshold was silent for a long time. The baby on her hip fussed. The woman did not shush the baby. "Come in," she said. The apartment was small and crowded and warm. Three rooms, maybe, divided by curtains. A cooking stove in one corner, a table in the center, beds along the walls. Rose Connolly sat Mary down and gave her tea and did not ask questions. "You look like your father," Rose said eventually. "Not the Sullivan father. Your father. The one I never met." Mary felt something move behind her ribs. Not pain. Not pleasure. Something that occupied the space between them. "I want to know who I am," Mary said. Rose looked at her for a long time. Then she said, quietly, "So do I." Mary went home that evening and sat at her typing desk and typed nothing. She thought about Rose Connolly, about the apartment, about the baby on her hip. She thought about Patrick and Margaret Sullivan, about the meatloaf and the beer and the hands that were not her hands but were hers anyway. She went to work the next morning. She typed forty words per minute. She went home. She did not call Rose Connolly. She did not not call her. She existed in the space between, which was the only place she knew how to exist. Her mother called her that evening. "Mary," Margaret said, and her voice was tentative in a way Mary had never heard it. "Did you... did you find out anything?" Mary looked at the telephone. She looked at her hands. She thought about Rose Connolly's apartment, about the baby, about the tea. "Yes," Mary said. "And?" Mary closed her eyes. "I'm coming home tomorrow," she said. Not because she had found an answer. Because the question was not answerable. Because she was a Sullivan by every measure that mattered in the daily world: she had been raised by Sullivans, worked for Sullivans, lived in a Sullivan house. Blood was a fact, but facts did not make lives. She hung up the phone. She sat in the dark for a while. Then she got up and went to sleep. The next morning, she rode the streetcar to work as usual. She typed the Henderson brief. She went home. She made tea.
