The phone rang at three in the morning, which in New York means one of two things: something has gone terribly wrong or someone has gone very rich. In my case, it was the former, and I knew it because the voice on the other end was my father, coughing up blood into a handkerchief that had once belonged to my mother.

"Franny," he said. "Come home."

I was二十二 years old, working as a draftsman at a Brooklyn shipyard, earning twelve dollars a week and dreaming about things that would never happen. I lived in a walk-up on Sterling Street with a roommate who played trumpet at night and a landlady who charged extra for heat in December.

When I got home, my father was sitting in his armchair by the window, looking out at the East River. He was a big man once—six feet, broad shoulders, the kind of body that had carried cotton bales on the Brooklyn docks before the ships stopped coming. Now he was all bone and cough.

"Doctor says it's consumption," he said. "They're sending me to California. A sanitarium in San Bernardino. They say the air will help."

"How much?" I asked.

"Two thousand dollars a year. For the treatment."

Two thousand dollars. I made twelve a week. It would take me three years of not eating to save that much.

My father put his hand on my knee. "I know, son. I know."

I went back to the shipyard the next day and drew lines on blueprints for ships that would never be built. The foreman walked by and tapped my drafting table. "O'Brien," he said. "You're a good draftsman. But the war's over and the Navy's not buying anymore. There might be a position opening in the auto plant on Atlantic Avenue. Pays thirteen dollars."

I said I'd think about it.

That night, someone knocked on my door. It was Timothy Murphy—Big Tim, as everyone called him. Tim had been a boxer in his youth, a cruiserweight with a left hook that could drop a bull. He'd hung up the gloves and opened a speakeasy in Greenwich Village called The Velvet Cellar. Tonight he was wearing a suit that cost more than my monthly rent and a smile that said he had a proposition.

"Franny," he said. "I got a job for you."

"I'm not a fighter anymore, Tim."

"It's not fighting. It's flying."

He told me about it over whiskey in the back room of his bar. A plane—private, owned by a guy who knew Mike, a guy who'd served in the war with Tim. They were going to intercept a commercial flight over the Atlantic. Not shoot it down—intercept it. Get close enough to the cargo hold to swap some barrels.

"Private whiskey," Tim said. "American whiskey, swapped for French wine. Nobody gets hurt. We make five thousand each."

Five thousand dollars. I could send my father to California twice over. I could buy my mother a house. I could—

"The pilot's a woman," Tim said. "Chloe Davis. She flies a biplane out of a field in Long Island. Best female pilot east of the Mississippi. Want to meet her?"

Part Two

Chloe Davis was twenty years old and had more nerve than anyone I'd ever met. She was standing on the wing of a Ford Trimotor biplane in a cold wind off the Long Island sound, adjusting the propeller with a wrench the size of her forearm.

"You Franny?" she called down. She wore a leather flight jacket and goggles pushed up on her forehead. Her hair was cut short, the way the flappers wore it.

"I am."

"You ever fly?"

"I watched a blimp once."

She laughed. "Get in the cockpit. I'll show you what flying is."

She climbed into the pilot's seat and pulled me up after her. The cockpit smelled like aviation fuel and hot metal. She started the engine and we taxied down the runway, and then—the ground fell away. The earth became a map. The sound of the engine was a song. For the first time in my life, I understood why people risked their lives in the air.

"See that?" Chloe said, pointing. "That's Manhattan. Right there. We're going over it in three days."

"Three days?"

"The Paris-New York flight. The Avenir de l'Amerique. It takes off from Le Bourget in forty-eight hours. We'll be in Paris by noon tomorrow. Julian's already there."

"Julian?"

"Fast-Talk Roth. He's the brains of this operation. If Tim's the muscle and Chloe's the wings, Julian's the... whatever the hell makes a machine work."

Julian Roth was twenty-four, Jewish, and wore glasses that made him look like a professor. He'd dropped out of NYU because "the curriculum was designed for people who wanted to be accountants." He could pick any lock in six seconds and speak three languages and had been arrested twice for "suspicious behavior at customs."

We met in his apartment in the Lower East Side, a small room filled with books and blueprints and a radio that played jazz at all hours. He showed us the flight plan.

"The Avenir de l'Amerique," he said, unrolling a map of the Atlantic. "Leaves Le Bourget at 8 AM Paris time. Arrives Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn at 6 PM New York time. Twelve-hour flight. Cargo hold is in the belly—about thirty feet behind the cockpit. They're carrying fifty barrels of French wine and twenty barrels of American whiskey. The whiskey is contraband. The wine is not."

"So we swap the whiskey for wine?" Tim said.

"No," Julian said. "We swap the whiskey for... well, that's what I need to figure out. Because what are we swapping it for?"

He had a point. If we stole American whiskey, we'd just be running bootleg liquor, which was illegal but not particularly heroic. But if we swapped it for something else—something that would make the news when we arrived—

"The passports," I said.

They looked at me.

"My father's friend," I said. "He's from Lithuania. His sister tried to come to America last year. They turned her away at Ellis Island because she didn't have the right papers. She went back to Vilnius and hasn't been heard from since."

Julian's eyes were behind his glasses. "You think there are refugees on this flight?"

"I think," I said, "that the French government is smuggling Jewish refugees to America under the guise of wine shipments. And I think our job isn't to steal whiskey—we're to make sure the refugees get through."

Chloe grinned. "I like this plan. It's stupid and impossible and I'm in."

Part Three

Le Bourget airport was a chaos of pilots, passengers, and cargo handlers. The Avenir de l'Amerique was a enormous flying boat with a wingspan that made my head spin. It sat on the runway like a whale beached in sand.

Julian had us on board as "passengers" in the cargo section. We wore civilian clothes and carried small valises. Tim was dressed as a merchant. Chloe as a flight attendant. Julian as a French businessman. I was just a draftsman from Brooklyn who happened to speak English fluently.

The flight began at dawn. The flying boat lifted off the Marne River and climbed into the pale morning sky. I watched from the cargo hold window as Paris shrank below us—a city of light and stone and history that I would never see with my own eyes.

Six hours into the flight, over the middle of the Atlantic, Chloe's voice came over the intercom: "Cargo hold, this is your pilot. We're going to be making a brief stop for navigation. Please remain seated."

We stood in the cargo hold. Fifty barrels lined the walls. Julian went to the first one and opened the valve.

Instead of wine, there was wood. Wooden crates. Crates stamped with Cyrillic letters.

Julian pried one open. Inside were passports. Hundreds of them. Stamped with French government seals. And ship tickets. And francs.

"They're not smuggling refugees," Julian whispered. "They're smuggling people."

Tim opened another crate. Same thing. Passports, names, faces of people who wanted to come to America.

I felt something shift in me—like a gear in a machine finally clicking into place.

"We swap the whiskey," I said. "Not for wine. For these. We take the passports and we drop them in the Atlantic and we replace them with—nothing. We leave the cargo hold empty. The passengers arrive with nothing. But the refugees..."

"Are already in America," Chloe said. "They're not on this flight. These are documents for people who are already here. Or will be."

Julian looked at me. "You're saying we steal nothing and deliver everything."

"I'm saying we do the hardest thing any of us has ever done. We don't take anything. We let it all go."

Tim punched a barrel. It was empty. "Five thousand dollars," he said. "We could have had five thousand dollars."

"We're doing something better," I said.

We opened the hatch. We dropped the barrels into the Atlantic. They sank like stones.

When we landed at Floyd Bennett Field, the customs agent looked at the empty cargo hold and asked what had happened.

"Storm damage," Julian said. "We lost the cargo to seawater."

The agent shrugged and stamped our passports.

Part Four

I stood on the beach at Coney Island the next morning, watching the sunrise paint the ocean in shades of copper and gold. In my pocket were five blank passports—I'd forged them using Julian's skills, with names I'd made up and dates I'd picked from a calendar.

Chloe was in her hangar in Long Island, working on her plane. Tim had gone back to his speakeasy, where he was already planning his next operation. Julian was in his apartment, drinking coffee and reading French poetry.

I walked to the Brooklyn docks and stood at the edge of the East River. I took out one of the forged passports and opened it. The name on the page was "David O'Brien." My father's name, without the accent, without the history, without the weight of a century of immigration and hard labor.

I dropped the passport into the river. It floated for a moment and then sank.

That evening, I got a telegram from my father: "Your doctor says I don't need California. A patient gave me a prescription that's working. Come home."

I sent it back with a single line: "I'm coming home, Papa."

When I got back to the walk-up, my father was sitting in his chair, just like before. He looked at me and smiled.

"You look tired," he said.

"I feel tired."

"Good. Tired means you're alive."

I sat down next to him. We looked out at the river. Somewhere in the Atlantic, a fleet of wooden crates was slowly sinking to the bottom, carrying hundreds of pieces of paper that meant everything to the people whose names were written on them.

"Father," I said. "Tomorrow, I'm going to apply for a job at the auto plant. Thirteen dollars a week."

"Thirteen," he repeated. "That's good."

"It's enough."

It wasn't much. But it was enough. And in 1926, in a Brooklyn walk-up with a coughing father and a river that carried the world's dreams to sea, enough was the most beautiful word in any language.
