The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash anything clean. It just makes the dirt slicker. I learned that in three years of driving through this city at night, watching neon lights bleed into the puddles on Wilshire Boulevard and wondering if the woman I was following was going to get in the car on the left or the right.

My name is Jack Moran. I was thirty-four years old, and I had one good eye and a collection of debts that could fill a phone book.

She came into my office on a Tuesday. Tuesdays were always slow—the kind of day when nothing happens and the silence in your office sounds like a warning. She wore a black coat and a veil, and she smelled like gardenias. The kind of gardenias that cost more than my monthly rent.

"My husband," she said. Her voice was low, like smoke. "He's involved in things I don't understand. I need your help to get something back. Something he's hidden."

"What kind of things?"

"The kind that will get you killed if you dig too deep."

I should have told her to leave. I should have gone back to my empty bottle and my empty desk and my empty apartment in Koreatown. But she put an envelope on my desk, and I opened it, and there was a stack of hundred-dollar bills that said she meant business.

"What do you need me to do?" I asked.

"I need you to fly a plane to Las Vegas. There's a crate in my husband's private hangar at Long Beach. I need it moved. Don't open it. Don't ask questions. Just move it."

"And you're the wife asking the husband's private detective to steal from the husband."

"I'm asking you to help me."

She gave me a name: Mike O'Brien. "He runs a small airfield near Hawthorne. Tell him Valerie sent you. He'll know what to do."

I called Mike. He answered on the third ring, and his voice had that old Navy roughness to it—the kind that comes from shouting over jet engines.

"Valerie sent you, huh?" He laughed. "Okay. I'll do it. Midnight. Hangar C at Long Beach."

Part Two

The hangar was cold and smelled like oil and old cigarettes. Mike was waiting with a Cessna 180 that had seen better decades. It was painted a dull gray, the kind of color that disappears in the dark.

"Where's the crate?" I asked.

"Right there." Mike pointed to a metal box sitting on a wooden pallet. It was about two feet square, rusted shut, with a combination lock on the front. It was heavier than it looked.

"Five thousand dollars," Mike said. "Half when we take off. Half when we land. You carry the crate. I fly. Easy."

I loaded the crate into the back of the Cessna. It took two of us. It sat on the floor like a judgment.

We took off at midnight. The runway lights of Long Beach shrank below us until they were just stars on the ground. I sat in the back next to the crate and listened to the engine hum. Mike was flying from memory, his hands moving on the controls like a pianist playing a song he'd known since he was a kid.

Two hours over the ocean. The Pacific was black and featureless. I opened the crate.

Inside were boxes. Small cardboard boxes, sealed with tape. I opened one. Inside were small plastic bags filled with a white powder. Cocaine. A lot of it.

And underneath the bags, a leather ledger. I opened it. It was full of names. Police officers. City councilmen. Judges. Each name had an amount next to it. Thousands. Tens of thousands.

This wasn't contraband. This was bribery records. Someone was paying off the entire city government of Los Angeles.

I closed the crate. I sat next to it for the rest of the flight and smoked three cigarettes and tried to figure out if I was the hero of this story or the fool.

Lasagna appeared in the dawn light—a grid of streets and buildings and the desert stretching out in every direction. We landed on a small private field outside the city. A man was waiting for us on the runway. He was short and thin, with a face like a knife.

"Delivery," Mike said.

The man nodded. He opened the back of the Cessna. He looked at the crate. He looked at me. His eyes were flat and cold.

"Where'd you get this?" he asked.

"Does it matter?"

He smiled. It wasn't a nice smile. "Open the second box."

I opened the second box in the crate. Inside were more bags, but these were different. These bags were filled with money. Small bills. Fifty-dollar bills. Stacks of them.

"Half the cargo is drugs," the man said. "Half is payment. For who?"

"For you."

The man's smile widened. "For my boss, Victor Costa. You just delivered his insurance policy to me."

He handed Mike an envelope. Mike counted the bills. He looked at me. His face had gone pale.

"Let's go," he said.

Part Three

I went back to my office at 6 AM. I drank three cups of coffee and read the ledger for four hours. Every name was a thread, and if I pulled them all at once, the whole thing would unravel.

I called Valerie's number. It was disconnected.

I went to her apartment in downtown LA. The landlord said she'd moved out two weeks ago. Left everything behind except a single suitcase and a letter to the landlord saying she was relocating to San Francisco.

The letter was on a FBI letterhead.

Valerie wasn't a wife. She was an FBI agent. She hadn't hired me to steal evidence from her husband. She'd hired me to transport it for her, because as an FBI agent, she couldn't be seen moving contraband, and as a private detective, I had no constitutional rights.

I was the mule.

I sat in my office and tried to figure out my next move. I could take the ledger to the police—but the police were on the list. I could take it to the FBI—but the FBI had sent Valerie. I could burn it.

I chose option four: I went to the bar.

The bar was on Central Avenue, a dive called The Anchor that smelled like old beer and regret. I sat at the counter and ordered a whiskey and read the ledger under the light of a flickering neon sign.

The phone rang at 11 PM. A man's voice, low and gravelly.

"Mr. Moran. We know you have something that doesn't belong to you."

"Who is this?"

"The man who hired your friend Valerie. The man who owns half the police force in this city."

"What do you want?"

"Come to the warehouse on Alameda Street. Warehouse 4. Come alone. Bring the book. And Jack—don't bring a cop. We'll know."

I went.

Warehouse 4 was a two-story brick building that had been a textile factory in the 1920s and something illegal ever since. I walked in through the front door. The space was filled with shipping crates and a single desk in the center. Behind the desk sat a man in a white suit. Victor Costa.

He was older than I expected. Sixty, maybe. His hair was silver and perfectly combed. His hands were manicured. He looked like a man who had never raised his voice in his life.

"Mr. Moran," he said. "Please sit."

I sat.

"The book," he said.

I pushed it across the desk. He opened it and flipped through it slowly, like a man reading a novel.

"Do you know how many people in this city would kill you for what you're carrying?" he asked.

"Is it a lot?"

"A lot. The police commissioner would shoot you on sight. The district attorney would prosecute you for murder. The mayor would sign your death warrant and then have lunch with your family."

He closed the book.

"Here's what's going to happen. You're going to walk out of this warehouse. You're going to go home. And you're going to forget that this book ever existed. In exchange, I'm going to give you a thousand dollars and a piece of advice: stop asking questions."

I stood up. I took the envelope. I walked out of the warehouse.

I didn't go home. I went to a payphone on Alameda and called a number from the ledger—a name that wasn't a cop, wasn't a politician. It was a rival. A gangster named Don Rossi, who controlled the north side of the city.

"Mr. Rossi," I said. "I have something you might want."

I told him about the book. I told him about Costa. I told him everything.

"Don't bring it to me," Rossi said. "Come to my office tomorrow. And Jack? Don't bring a friend."

Part Four

I slept in my car that night. The Cessna was parked at Mike's field, and I couldn't go back there—Costa would have it watched. My apartment had been searched. My office had been searched.

In the morning, I drove to Rossi's office. It was in a building on Spring Street, the kind of place where the marble floors were polished and the walls were covered in paintings worth more than my life.

Rossi was a small man with big eyes. He looked at the book, and then he looked at me, and then he smiled.

"Costa's been a problem for a long time," he said. "But you know what the problem with this book is?"

"What?"

"It's a dead man's ledger. The people in it are all dead already. The question is: who digs them up first."

He took the book from me. "I'll give you five thousand dollars."

"For what?"

"For disappearing."

I got the money. I didn't spend it. I took it to a bank in Pomona and deposited it under a fake name. Then I drove to the beach.

I was sitting in my car on the Santa Monica shoreline, watching the sun come up over the Pacific, when my phone rang. It was Mike.

"Jack, they got me," he said. His voice was broken. "Costa's men. They came to the field last night. I ran. But Jack—"

"What?"

"They have my daughter. In school in Long Beach."

I closed my eyes. "Mike, I'm sorry."

"I know. I know you did what you were told. But listen to me—Valerie. She's still alive. I saw her. She was at the warehouse. She watched me leave. She didn't stop them."

"Valerie? The FBI agent?"

"She's not FBI, Jack. She never was. She's Costa's mistress. And you were the fool who delivered her little insurance policy to us."

The line went dead.

I sat in my car on the beach and watched the sunrise paint the ocean gold. I thought about the ledger, sitting in Rossi's office. I thought about Mike's daughter. I thought about the woman in the black coat who had walked into my office on a Tuesday and told me a story that wasn't true.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a silver ring. Valerie had given it to me on our last night together. She'd said it was her grandmother's. Inside was engraved a name: Lucy.

Not Valerie's name.

I put the ring on the dashboard. The ocean was calm. The sun was up. And I was alive, which in Los Angeles was the closest thing to luck you were going to get.
