Part I

The jazz was still playing when Daisy arrived at the club, though by then it was past two in the morning and the musicians were playing with the languid, half-drunk energy of men who had been performing for eight hours and could feel their shoes dissolving through the soles.

She sat at the bar with a gin fizz that tasted mostly of sugar and not enough gin, and watched the room the way she had been taught to watch rooms since she was six: assessing value, identifying threats, calculating exits.

It was a habit she had never shaken. Even at sixteen, when her mother had tried to teach her waltzes instead of exits, Daisy Winthrop had been more interested in the door than the dance floor.

The engagement had ended three days ago. Hugh Pendleton had asked her to stay the night at his father\'s Westchester estate. She had agreed, partly because it was what engaged girls did, partly because she wanted to see his father\'s library (which, her sources informed her, contained first editions), and partly because she had wanted — just once — to do what was expected and see if the world would end.

It had not ended. But by the time she left the next morning, Hugh would have told his best friend over breakfast that she was "a delightful girl, but rather too independent for her own good." Which was code for: too smart for his purposes, and his purposes were entirely financial.

She had known this. She had known it from the moment he had asked her father for her hand in a letter that mentioned the Winthrop family\'s yacht collection as a "considerable asset." But knowing and accepting were two different things, and she had spent three days oscillating between them like a pendulum.

The bar stool beside her scraped against the floor. She did not turn.

"You\'re drinking sugar water," said a voice.

"I\'m drinking exactly what I ordered."

"It\'s a gin fizz. Which is to say, you ordered sugar water."

She turned. Tommy Ashford stood beside her in a suit that was good but not new, a tie that was new but not good, and a smile that was both. He looked the way he always looked when he was trying not to look at her: like he was looking at everything else in the room and forgetting to look at her.

"Tommy," she said. "What are you doing here?"

"Same thing you are. Trying not to think about something."

"Are you good at that?"

"I\'m excellent at not thinking about things I can\'t change."

She felt something in her chest unclench. It was a small movement, invisible to anyone who wasn\'t sitting next to him.

Part II

The garden party had been held at the Pendleton estate on a Saturday in June. The lawns were white with dresses. The men wore straw hats and white suits and the particular kind of confidence that comes from never having worried about money.

Hugh had proposed at the end of it — publicly, under the pergola where the wisteras were blooming, in front of everyone who would tell his father about it by teatime.

He had said: "Daisy Winthrop, will you marry me?"

She had said: "Not yet."

Which was technically true. She had not said no. She had said not yet — which is the most dangerous answer a girl can give a man like Hugh, because it implies possibility, and possibility is the fuel of obsession.

What no one knew — what Tommy knew because he had been sitting on the far side of the lawn, playing saxophone for the cocktail hour — was that Hugh had made the bet.

He had bet her cousin Arabella that Daisy would say yes. Arabella had bet that she would say no. The stakes were fifty dollars, which in 1923 was enough to buy a very good bottle of champagne and get very drunk on it.

Daisy had overheard this. Not intentionally — she had been walking past the pergola on her way to the tennis courts, and Hugh\'s voice had carried.

"She\'ll say yes," Hugh had said. "They always do. The Winthrops would sell their last silver spoon to keep up the appearance of having silver spoons."

Daisy had turned around. Walked back. And said: "If I say no, Hugh, you disappear from my life. No letters, no visits, no appearances at any event my family attends. Is that clear?"

He had smiled. "And if you say yes?"

"Then you get to be Mr. Daisy Winthrop and pretend you didn\'t grow up owing money to men who break fingers."

The lawn had gone very quiet. Tommy had stopped playing.

Part III

The Long Island shore at dusk was a place where the water looked like liquid brass and the sky was the color of a bruise. Daisy and Tommy walked along the beach in silence, the kind of silence that was not empty but full — full of things they had never said and might never say.

"Tommy," she said. "When we were kids — in Rockport, when I was sixteen and you were twenty — did you ever —"

"Never finish a sentence you started, Dai. It\'s one of your worst habits."

"Is it?"

"Yes. People deserve to know what you\'re going to say."

She stopped walking. The waves were loud tonight — a nor\'easter was building offshore, and the sea was throwing itself against the rocks with a fury that felt personal.

"Why did you come to New York?" she asked.

"To write."

"And play saxophone."

"Both. Neither. I don\'t know anymore."

"Then why do you play that piece for me?"

He looked at her. The sunset was in his eyes — brass and bruise and everything in between.

"What piece?"

"The one you play at every family gathering. Every birthday. Every Christmas. Every time my mother has guests over." She paused. "Every time I walk into the same room as you."

He was quiet. The wind was cold now, carrying the smell of salt and something else — something like rain that had not yet fallen.

"It\'s called \'Rockport,\' " he said. "I wrote it the summer I turned eighteen. I was standing on the pier — the old one, before it burned down — and I was watching you run along the edge, barefoot, with your hair full of salt and your dress half in the water, and I was thinking —"

"Don\'t."

"I was thinking that you looked like someone who had been given everything and hated it. And I wanted to give you something you didn\'t hate. But I didn\'t know what that was."

She felt tears come. Not quietly this time. She let them come. The wind took them before they could embarrass her.

"Tommy," she said. "Can a man love two women?"

He thought about it. The sun was gone now. The sky was dark purple and the first stars were appearing.

"Yes," he said. "But not the way you think. He can love one woman for who she is and another woman for who she makes him. And he can love both of them with the same honesty, and still be a coward for not choosing."

She looked at him. Really looked at him. At the lines around his eyes, the callous on his thumb from saxophone strings, the way his mouth tilted when he was trying not to smile.

She was twenty-one years old and she had just ended an engagement and she had never felt more awake in her life.

Part IV

The hurricane arrived two days later. It was not a true hurricane — just a tropical depression pushing in from the Atlantic — but it was enough to knock out the power along the entire north shore and drive every social creature indoors.

Daisy had been at her aunt\'s house in East Hampton when the first gusts hit. She had taken shelter in the library, which was large and warm and smelled of old paper and lemon polish. Tommy had arrived an hour later — he lived in a cottage on the property, the one the family used to rent to musicians during the summer season.

They were the only people left in the house. Everyone else had fled to New York or Connecticut or wherever the wealthy fled when the sky turned green and the trees started bending.

Her aunt and her mother arrived separately — both at the same time, which was the kind of coincidence that felt deliberate, as if the universe had a sense of humour and it was aimed at her.

The confrontation was quiet, as confrontations between women of her class always were. No raised voices. No thrown objects. Just words, sharp and precise, placed like knives on a dining table.

"You\'re engaged," Daisy\'s mother said.

"I\'m not," Daisy said.

"You\'re pretending," her aunt said.

"To whom?"

"To everyone. Because pretending is the only currency any of us have."

Daisy looked at Tommy. He was standing by the window, watching the rain. He did not look away.

That night, she and Tommy sat in the library by candlelight. She produced a document — typed on heavy cream paper, bound with a ribbon her mother had given her for her birthday. One year. Public courtship. Financial support. Social cover.

He read it. Put it down. Looked at her.

"You don\'t have to do this," he said.

"I know."

"Then why are you?"

She looked at the candle flame. It flickered in the wind that came through the cracks in the window frames.

"Because it\'s the only thing I\'ve decided in three weeks," she said.

And she signed her name — Daisy Winthrop the Third — and felt the weight of the ink, the permanence of it, the beautiful terrifying fact that once something was written on paper, it could not be unwritten.

Tommy signed below hers. His name — Thomas Ashford — looked different in the candlelight than it did in daylight. Less like a musician\'s name. More like something older.

Outside, the storm raged. Inside, the candle burned low. And Daisy Winthrop sat across from a man she had loved since she was sixteen and was pretending to be his fiancée, and for the first time in her life, the pretense felt almost real.

Almost.

Not quite.

But almost.
