The fog in Hollow Creek didn't roll in. It was already there, waiting, patient as a thief. It came out of the ground in the mornings and went back into the ground at night, and the people who lived here had long ago stopped commenting on it. It was simply part of the landscape, like the mountains and the rot and the silence.

Lydia knew the fog better than she knew herself. She had been here for four months, and in four months she had learned that the fog was not just weather. It was a character in this story, like the house and the man in the basement and the dog that sometimes appeared at the edge of her vision like a bad dream.

She was twenty years old and she could not remember her eighth birthday. Not because it was traumatic—because it was simply gone, like a page torn from a book she hadn't noticed was missing until someone asked her about it.

Her doctor called it dissociation. Her father called it stress. She called it disappearing.

When the fog got too thick and the nights got too long and the man in the basement got too loud, she disappeared. Not physically—she was still in the room, still breathing, still present—but something inside her stepped back and watched herself from a distance, the way you watch a car crash in slow motion from behind thick glass.

Tonight, the fog was especially thick. It pressed against the windows of the cellar room like a living thing trying to get in. Or get out.

It was unlocked. It opened into a small room that smelled of woodsmoke and old coffee and something like hope.

An old man stood in the corner, holding a rifle. He was sixty if he was a day, with a face like a prune and eyes that had seen things and decided not to talk about them.

"Drop the rifle," she said. Her voice was steady. This was her dissociation talking, the part of her that watched from a distance.

The old man lowered the rifle. "Who are you?"

"Someone who needs help."

"Come in," he said. "Before the dog comes back."

"The dog?"

Phantom did not bark. He did not whine. He simply stood outside Elias's cabin for the entire night, staring at the house with those scarred, intelligent eyes. Elias watched him through the window, drinking coffee that had gone cold an hour ago, thinking about the war and the things he had seen and the things he had done and the dog that had stayed with him through all of it, scarred and broken and loyal in a way that Elias could not fully understand but deeply respected.

He had forgotten most of his own name, for that matter. People called him Elias because that was what his mother had called him, and he had forgotten what his father had called him.

Lydia sat by the fire in a blanket Elias had dug out of a trunk in the corner. She was shaking. Not from cold—from the dissociation. Her eyes were distant, unfocused, looking at something that wasn't in the room.

"Lydia," Elias said. "Can you hear me?"

She blinked. Focused. Looked at him. "Where am I?"

"You're safe."

"Am I?" She looked at her arms—at the marks, the bruises, the places where rope had dug into her skin. "I don't know how to be safe, Mr.—"

"Elias."

"Elias. I don't know how to be safe. I've been so long that I've forgotten what it feels like to not be afraid." She stopped. Looked at him with those flat, empty eyes again. "I've forgotten so many things. My eighth birthday. The color of my mother's eyes. Whether I ever told someone I loved them and they loved me back."

Elias sat down across from her. He was a man who had spent a lifetime not saying things. The war had taught him that. The dog had taught him that too. Some things were better left unsaid.

But tonight, sitting in a cabin in the middle of a fog-shrouded Appalachian valley with a girl who had forgotten her own birthday, he felt something he hadn't felt in three years: the urge to say something that mattered.

"You're twenty years old," he said. "You've been gone for four months. That's one hundred and twenty days. Three hundred and sixty hours. Twenty-one thousand six hundred minutes. In that time, you have forgotten some things and gained others. You know how to count paces. You know when a Thursday has bad arthritis. You know that a dog called Phantom can find anything if you give him something that smells like the person he's looking for."

Lydia touched her neck. There was a small cloth pouch there, hidden under her shirt. She pulled it out. It contained two strands of hair, wrapped in red thread. One dark, one light.

"My hair," she said. "And Benjamin's. We—we were supposed to get married in the spring."

"Benjamin?"

"Benjamin Clay. He's a doctor. He lives in the next valley. He's— he's the only person who's ever looked at me and seen me. Not Lydia Hale, the doctor's daughter. Not Lydia Hale, the girl next door. Just Lydia."

Elias nodded. He stood up, went to a drawer, took out a small cloth bag with some hardtack and dried meat in it, and tied it around the red thread.

"Phantom's outside," he said. "He's the best dog I've ever known. He can't speak. He can't read. He can't do algebra. But he can find anything that has a scent, and hair—fresh hair—has a strong scent."

He handed her the bag. "Give it to him."

Lydia looked at the bag. Looked at Elias. Looked at the window, where Phantom's grey shape was barely visible through the morning fog.

She opened the cabin door. Phantom was there, sitting in the dew, watching her with those ancient eyes. She knelt and held out the bag. Phantom approached cautiously, sniffed it, and then did something that made Lydia's heart stop: he gently took the bag in his teeth, looked at her one last time, turned, and walked into the fog.

Lydia stood in the doorway and watched him go. She didn't cry. She had run out of tears three months ago. She simply stood there, in the cold and the fog, watching the grey shape disappear into the white.

Behind her, Elias said quietly, "He'll find him."

Lydia didn't answer. She couldn't. Because somewhere inside her, the part that watched from a distance was saying something she couldn't quite hear.

He was gone.

And for the first time in four months, Lydia felt something that was not fear, not pain, not the numb dissociation that had been her constant companion.

She felt hope.

Hope was dangerous. Hope got you killed. Hope made you careless. Hope made you believe things that weren't true.

But as Lydia pressed her face to the cold glass and watched the fog swallow the last trace of Phantom's grey form, she allowed herself one moment of hope. One brief, dangerous, beautiful moment.

Then the man in the basement stopped pounding. The house went quiet. The fog pressed closer. And Lydia Hale began to count the paces from the door to the stairs again.
