Nothing to Read
The roadside was not interesting at this hour. It was half past seven in the morning on a Wednesday in November, which is to say it was during the transition from night to day, from the quiet hours when the trucks rumbled past like distant thunder to the noisy hours when they rumbled past like immediate annoyance, and in between there was a period of maybe twenty minutes, half past seven to half past seven-thirty, when the light was grey and the air was cold and the only person who would reasonably be sitting by this stretch of highway in Detroit was someone who had nowhere else to be and nowhere else to go, which is not to say that such a person didn't exist, only that such a person was not the kind of person other people noticed.
John Miller was such a person. He had been such a person for eleven months and twenty-three days, which is how long it had been since the accusation, the false plagiarism accusation that had destroyed ten years of teaching at a university where he had been respected but not loved, respected the way respected professors are respected, like furniture that occasionally produces an insight, loved the way people love the weather, which is to say not at all but wished more often for something different. The accusation had come from a junior colleague, a man named Richard Cole who was thirty-four and ambitious and had published a paper that covered similar ground to Miller's upcoming book, and Richard Cole had gone to the department head with a claim that Miller had accessed his preliminary notes without permission and had used them without attribution, and the university had investigated, as universities do, through a committee that met for six weeks and produced a report that concluded the evidence was inconclusive but the appearance of impropriety was sufficient to recommend that Miller take a leave of absence pending further review, which is academic code for we don't believe you're guilty but we also don't believe you're innocent and the only solution that satisfies everyone is for you to disappear for a while and then come back and teach summer classes and never speak about this again.

And then it was indefinite, which is the academic version of forever, an indefinite period of time being a period of time that will not end until the people who started it want it to end, which is not the same as when the truth comes out, because truth and inconvenience are not the same thing and universities are expert at separating them, putting truth in a drawer and keeping the inconvenience on the shelf where everyone can see it and no one has to actually deal with it.
So he stopped going. He stopped answering emails. He stopped pretending that the inbox was a place you could live, an inbox full of messages from people who said they were sorry but weren't really sorry, sorry that it had happened, sorry that it had happened to you, sorry that the situation was inconvenient for the institution, but not sorry in the way that matters, not sorry enough to say, John Miller is innocent and I will say it in public and I will risk my own tenure and my own reputation and my own comfortable position in a system that rewards silence, not sorry enough to say any of that, which is to say not sorry at all.
He sold the house in Ann Arbor. "I'm John," he said.
"I know. Teresa James. I'm a mama at a strip club on the west side."
"A mama."
"A manager. I have about twelve girls on my floor. One of them, her daughter, she's twelve, charged with theft, something her mother did at a store, she took something, doesn't matter what, and now she's facing charges, and I need to write a letter to the judge, a character reference letter, and I need help writing it, because I didn't finish high school and I can't write like I want to write, like she deserves to be written about, and someone told me you sit here and you read things, and I thought maybe you could help me read it before I send it, or help me write it, I don't know which, but I need help."
John looked at her hands. They were in her pockets. He asked her to take them out, and she did, and he looked at her palms, and what he saw was what he always saw when he looked at hands, not the lines, not the patterns that palm readers claim to read, which is nothing, which is nothing at all, it's just skin and blood and bone, what he saw was the history in the texture, the roughness of the fingertips, the calluses on the palm, the dryness of the skin, the hands of someone who works with other people's bodies, who adjusts straps and fixes makeup and smooths hair and wipes away tears and hands out condoms and makes phone calls and pays bail and writes letters to judges and does a hundred small invisible things that hold a life together, the life of a stranger, the life of someone who isn't her, but who she has decided, for reasons that may or may not be explainable, to carry for a little while.
He looked at her palms and he saw nothing. He could read nothing. He had never been able to read palms. He had told people he could, on the roadside, on some mornings, when the trucks weren't rumbling and the light was good and he felt like performing, like being something he wasn't, like a man with gifts, when he was just a man with hands and a mind and a lifetime of reading books and people and the spaces between, and none of it translated to palm lines, none of it translated to destiny or character or future, because the future is not written in the skin, it's written in the choices, and choices are invisible, and the only thing he could read was the present, the present moment, the woman standing in front of him with her hands in the air and her eyes on his and her life on the other side of a twelve-year-old girl's mistake and a judge's gavel and a letter that might or might not matter, a piece of paper that might or might not make a difference between a courtroom and a home, between a record and a clean slate, between a child who learns that the world is unfair and a child who learns that the world can be persuaded.
"I can't read palms," he said.
Teresa James lowered her hands. She didn't look surprised. She looked tired.
"I know," she said. "I figured. You don't look like you can. You look like a man who looks at things and doesn't pretend they mean more than they do."
"I was a professor," he said. "I taught literature. I got accused of plagiarism. It was false, but the university didn't care. I don't read palms. I read books. And sometimes I read the backs of trucks. And sometimes I read nothing at all."
She nodded. She put her hands back in her pockets. The wind blew from the highway and carried with it the smell of diesel and wet asphalt and something sweet that she was carrying, a faint trace of vanilla body spray, the kind that girls wear to strip clubs, the kind that says I know what I'm doing here and I'm not ashamed of it and I'm not proud of it either, I'm just here, present, like John Miller on his folding chair, present and reading nothing and being okay with it.
"Can you help me with the letter anyway?" she asked. "Not read palms. Just help me write it. I can tell you about her. You tell me how to say it."
John looked at her. He looked at the roadside. He looked at the highway, where a truck was passing, a long black sedan of a truck, the kind that doesn't stop and doesn't slow down and doesn't notice the man on the folding chair or the woman in the worn coat or the grey light or the cold air, just moves forward, relentlessly, indifferently, the way the world does, the way time does, the way everything does that we mistake for purpose.
He stood up from the folding chair. His knees cracked. He was fifty-eight years old and he felt eighty. He was a former professor with a destroyed reputation and a folding chair and a lifetime of reading books and people and the spaces between, and none of it had prepared him for this, for a woman asking him to help her write a letter to a judge for a twelve-year-old girl she was not related to, a girl whose mother had made a mistake and was facing consequences and needed someone to speak for her, not because the speaking would matter, probably, but because the speaking was the only thing that mattered, the only thing that had ever mattered, the only thing that John Miller had ever been good at, not reading palms, not teaching literature, not publishing papers, but speaking for people who couldn't speak for themselves, which is what a professor is, which is what a palm reader is, which is what every human being is, if they're honest about it, a person who speaks for another person, who translates their presence into words, who turns nothing into something and something into something that can be read, even if it's nothing, even if there's nothing to read, even if the letter doesn't matter and the judge doesn't care and the system doesn't change and the twelve-year-old still goes to court and still faces charges and still learns whatever she's going to learn, but someone speaks anyway, because that's what you do, that's what you do when someone asks you to, when a woman in a worn coat takes her hands out of her pockets and holds them up and asks for help and you look at her palms and you see nothing and you say I can't read anything and she says I know and you say I was a professor and she says can you help me with the letter anyway and you stand up from your folding chair and your knees crack and you think about the trucks and the grey light and the cold air and the seventeen years of teaching and the eleven months and twenty-three days of silence and the false accusation and the university that didn't care and the students who never wrote back and the books that are sitting in boxes in his apartment and the palms that show nothing and the letter that might not matter and you say yes, yes I can help you write the letter, because that's what you do, that's what you've always done, you speak for people, you translate their presence into words, you turn nothing into something, you turn nothing into something, you turn nothing into something.
He sat down next to her on the guardrail, not in the chair, not behind a desk, not in the position of an expert, but next to her, on the cold metal of the guardrail, with the trucks rumbling past and the grey light and the cold air and the highway and the Detroit morning and nothing to read and everything to say.
