What the Snow Keeps

ACT I: THE ENVELOPE

The snow was coming down in Ohio like it had something to prove. Not a storm. Not a dusting. A steady, methodical falling that covered everything in a layer of white that was thinner than it looked and harder to walk through than it deserved to be. Ray Kowalski was walking home from the laundromat, which is to say he was walking in any direction that wasn't toward his trailer because he hadn't decided yet which direction was toward his trailer and the laundromat was warm and he had twenty minutes before his load was done and the snow gave him an excuse to stand under the awning of a closed laundromat and not be anywhere in particular.

He saw the envelope in the snow because the snow made everything look the same and the envelope looked different. It was manila, rectangular, maybe four inches by nine, lying flat on the sidewalk like someone had set it down and walked away. The snow was accumulating on top of it, a thin white cap that made it look like a loaf of bread someone had left out for the birds.

Ray picked it up. It was heavy for an envelope. He could feel the weight through the paper. He opened it under the awning, where the snow couldn't get in, and found a stack of twenty-dollar bills. He counted them with numb fingers: twenty, forty, sixty, eighty, one hundred, one hundred twenty, one hundred forty, one hundred sixty, one hundred eighty, two hundred, two hundred twenty, two hundred forty, two hundred sixty, two hundred eighty, three hundred twenty, three hundred forty, three hundred sixty, three hundred eighty, four hundred. Four hundred dollars in twenty-dollar bills.

Ray stood under the awning and looked at the money and looked at the snow and looked at the money again. His first thought was not greed. His first thought was: this is not mine. His second thought, which came about three seconds later and which he did not like to think about because it made him feel small, was: maybe it is now.

He put the envelope in his coat pocket. He went back to the laundromat. His load was done. He folded the clothes with fast hands that were getting colder by the minute. He walked home.

The trailer was eight degrees inside. Linda was at work, not back until midnight. She worked the night shift at Oakridge Nursing Home, which meant she came home at eight in the morning, slept until four in the afternoon, and then went back. Their schedule was two separate lives living in the same space. Ray understood this. He didn't resent it. You don't resent someone for doing something that keeps the lights on.

He took the envelope out of his pocket. He counted the money again. Four hundred dollars. He thought about what he needed: Linda's insulin was running low, he could feel her breathing getting more shallow in the mornings when he was still half-asleep and listening for it, and the grocery store had raised the price on ground beef again, and the trailer park office had sent a notice about the lot rent going up by fifteen dollars a month starting in January.

He put the money in the top drawer of the dresser, under a stack of old magazines, and went to bed and listened to his own breathing and tried to convince himself it was the same breathing it had always been.

ACT II: THE GHOST FACE

Dale Mercer saw him.

Dale drove a pickup with a for-hire sign on the door and drank after work and lived in the trailer two spaces down from the Kowalskis, which is to say he lived in the trailer that was closest to the road and the noise and the wind, because that's where the cheap ones were and Dale Mercer was a man who was cheap on everything except beer and the feeling of being the kind of man who didn't care about anything.

He saw Ray pick up the envelope. He saw him look at it under the awning. He saw him put it in his coat. He didn't think much of it. Envelopes in the snow were a regular occurrence in a place like this. People dropped mail all the time. Envelopes were the most dropped thing in the world. But this envelope was thick, and Dale could see the outline of it through Ray's coat, and Dale had been a man long enough to recognize the shape of something that mattered when he saw it.

He followed Ray home. He didn't follow him like a stalker. He followed him like a man who walks behind someone on a dark street so he doesn't have to walk alone. But he was tracking him. He knew this. He was a man who knew things about himself that he didn't tell other people.

Two days later, Ray went to the grocery store. He needed ground beef and milk and the insulin patch thing that Linda called by its real name and the store only carried by its brand name and Ray called by no name because he didn't know what to call something that took thirty dollars a month out of a life that had maybe forty dollars a month to give.

He put his stuff on the counter. The kid behind the register was maybe seventeen, had acne on his chin that he was proud of, and scanned everything with the bored efficiency of a boy who had scanned everything before and would scan everything again. Ray counted out the twenties from the envelope. Two, four, six, eight, ten, twelve, fifteen. Fifteen twenties. Three hundred dollars. The rest was groceries.

The kid took the bills. He put them in a stack. He reached for the next stack. And then he stopped.

He picked up one of the twenties and held it up to the fluorescent light. He picked up another. Held it up. Picked up a third.

Ray watched him. He felt something in his stomach do a small movement that he recognized as the beginning of a problem.

"These are bad," the kid said. He didn't say it angrily. He said it the way a boy says "the lunch meat's moldy" when he opens the package and sees the green fuzz. Out of habit. Not accusation.

"What do you mean?" Ray said.

The kid held one up to the light again. "Look."

Ray looked. He held a bill up to the light. He saw it too. Not a watermark. Not the security thread. A ghost. A face that wasn't supposed to be there, visible only when you held the bill up to the light, like a secret the money was telling you that it didn't want other people to know.

"I don't know what that means," Ray said.

"It means they're fake," the kid said. And he put the bills on the counter and looked at Ray with eyes that were not angry but were the next thing to angry, which is confused, because the kid couldn't tell if Ray was the kind of man who brought fake bills into a store or the kind of man who didn't know he was carrying them.

Ray paid with a five-dollar bill from his wallet that he had gotten from his paycheck and which was definitely, undoubtedly, truly real. He took his groceries and walked out into the snow and did not look back.

ACT III: THE CALL

Ray went to work the next day. He worked at the grocery store himself, two blocks from the one where the kid had called the police, which is to say he hadn't called the police but he had called someone, because boys who are seventeen and proud of their acne are also boys who are proud of their responsibility to the community and the community included not letting fake money circulate.

His boss, a man named Terry who was fifty and overweight and had been a manager at this store for twenty years and had seen every kind of dishonesty this particular kind of store could be dishonest about, came out from the office and closed the door and sat down behind his desk and looked at Ray.

"Someone called it in," Terry said. He didn't say who. He didn't need to.

"I didn't know," Ray said.

"That's what they all say."

"I found them."

Terry looked at him. He had seen this story before. He had seen it five times in twenty years. It was not a common story but it was not rare, which meant it was exactly as common as the number of times he had seen it: five times in twenty years.

"How much?" Terry said.

"Four hundred."

Terry made a sound that was not a laugh but was close to it. "Four hundred dollars in fake twenties. That's eighty dollars' worth of paper. You found four hundred dollars and it was worth eighty bucks."

"I didn't know."

"That's what they all say." Terry stood up. He was a big man and when he stood up the room got smaller. "I'm sorry, Ray. You know the policy. Anyone caught passing fake money, even accidentally, even after finding it, even if he tells me he found it in the snow and he's been working my store for three years and he's a good man and his wife works nights at a nursing home and I've never had a complaint about him in three years— you know the policy."

Ray knew the policy. The policy was the policy.

"Last day today," Terry said. "I'll pay you for the hours you've worked. Don't come back tomorrow."

Ray walked out of the store. He walked through the parking lot. He walked through the snow. He walked past the laundromat where he had found the envelope. He walked past the grocery store where the kid with the acne had held the bill up to the light. He walked past the nursing home where Linda worked. He walked past his trailer. He kept walking.

ACT IV: THE LIGHT

Linda came home at eight in the morning. She came in through the back door, took off her shoes, and walked into the kitchen where the trailer was eight degrees inside and the coffee maker was empty and the drawer where Ray kept his paychecks was open and empty.

She didn't yell. She went to the bedroom and sat on the bed and waited.

Ray came home at nine. He came in through the front door, took off his shoes, and walked into the kitchen where Linda was sitting on the bed and the coffee maker was empty and the drawer was open and empty.

He told her about the money. He told her about the envelope in the snow. He told her about the ghost face. He told her about the kid. He told her about Terry. He told her everything, in a voice that was flat the way a man's voice is flat when he is saying things he has said a hundred times in his head and knows will not change the outcome.

Linda listened. She listened to the story of a man who found money that wasn't his and spent it and lost his job and came home to a wife who was not angry but was something worse than angry: she was disappointed, and disappointment is the one emotion that cannot be argued with because it is not directed at what you did but at what you are, and you cannot argue with what you are because you have been it your whole life and changing it would require a different person.

She didn't cry. She made coffee. The coffee maker clicked and gurgled and produced a small pot of brown liquid that smelled like something that was trying to be coffee and failing. She poured two cups. She put one on the table in front of Ray. She sat down across from him.

"I need to pick up extra shifts," she said. "The lot rent is going up. And my patches are running low."

Ray looked at her. He looked at the coffee. He looked at the snow outside the trailer window, which had stopped falling and was now just sitting there, covering everything in a layer of white that was thinner than it looked and harder to walk through than it deserved to be.

"I know," he said.

He finished his coffee. He put the cup in the sink. He went to the bedroom and took his work boots from the closet and laced them up and went out the door and walked into the snow. A street light flickered on somewhere down the road, then off, then on again, and Ray Kowalski walked toward it with his hands in his pockets and his breath making small ghosts in the cold air, and the snow kept falling on the trailer and the parking lot and the road and the street light and everything else that didn't care whether it was covered in white or not, because the snow didn't care and neither did the street light and neither, it turned out, did much of anything else.

He kept walking.
