The Black Manuscript
Chapter One
The package arrived on a Tuesday, wrapped in brown paper and tied with twine. No return address. No stamp, just a postmark from a town I'd never heard of. Inside were two hundred and thirty pounds of typewritten pages, sorted into twenty-three manila folders and held together with rubber bands that had gone brittle with age.

Chapter Three
Blackwell came to my office on a Friday. He didn't knock. He didn't announce himself. He just walked in, closed the door, and sat down in the chair opposite my desk like he owned the building.
"You've read it," he said. Not a question.
"Yes."
"How much?"
"Most of it."
He nodded. He was a thin man in a tailored suit, with a face that was handsome in the same way a statue is handsome—symmetrical, expressionless, impossible to read. "How much did you find?"

He stood up and walked to the window. Outside, Los Angeles was bright and clean and full of people who believed they were free. "Here's what's going to happen. You're going to finish organizing this manuscript. You're going to give it to me. And I'm going to give you a new job."
"What kind of job?"
"You're going to help me burn it."
He said it without hesitation. Without emotion. Like he was discussing the weather.

The last thousand characters of the manuscript described me.
Jack Morano. Private investigator. Former war correspondent. Left eye scarred from a bullet in the Ardennes. Alcohol problem. One ex-wife, one daughter he hadn't seen in eighteen months. A moral compass that pointed north on good days and east on bad ones.
The manuscript described my office. It described my morning routine. It described the way I poured whiskey over ice at 10:30 AM every day because I couldn't start the typewriter any other way.
It described what I was thinking right now.
And then, in the final sentence of the final chapter, it said something that made me understand everything:
The manuscript was not an index of corruption. It was an index of everyone. Including me. Including Blackwell. Including the dead man who had written it.
Every human being was a transaction. Every human being could be indexed. And when you had indexed everyone, you had nothing left but a book full of names and a world that no one could read.
I burned half of it. The other half, I gave to the library. I didn't sign it. I didn't keep a copy. I just took them to the building one by one and handed them over and walked away.
Elena found me at the bar at midnight. "Did you do it?" she asked.
I nodded.
"Which half?"
"The one that mattered."
She sat down beside me and ordered a drink. "What was in it?"
I looked at her. I thought about the forty-seven thousand names. The forty-seven thousand stories. The truth that would have destroyed everything if anyone had read it.
"Nothing," I said. "Just names. Nobody important."
She didn't believe me. Nobody believed me. And that was the point. The most powerful book in the history of Los Angeles was reduced to a conversation between two people who would never talk about it again.
In a city where truth was currency and lies were law, the only power anyone had was the power to forget.
