The Long Hold
ACT I
The land did not change. The people who claimed it did.
William Harrington first saw the parcel in the spring of 1753. He was twenty-three, a speculative thinker in a colony that thought speculation was a sin until it became a profession, and he had walked out from the edge of the cleared forest to look at three hundred acres of uncut woodland that sat on a rise above the Potomac and thought: this will be worth something.
He was right. By 1775, the land had passed through three sets of hands—Harrington had bought it from a man who had inherited it from a man who had been given it by the governor—and each time its value had increased, not because the land itself had changed but because the people who wanted it had changed. The first man wanted timber. Harrington wanted tobacco. The third man wanted a view.
William Harrington was buried on the land in 1798, in a grave his son dug beside the cabin his son had built on the foundation of the cabin William had burned in 1776 because the British had used it and he would not let them have anything.
ACT II
One hundred and sixty years later, the land belonged to Thomas Harrington, William's great-great-grandson, who was thirty-four and a soldier in an army that was tearing the country in half over the question of whether men could own other men and whether land could own men in return.
Thomas stood on the same rise and looked at the same three hundred acres, which had been cut down and replanted and cut down again and which now belonged to him on paper but not in practice, because the war had taken his father and his brothers and most of his workers and left him with a deed and a rifle and a field that was growing weeds.
A man named Riley lived on the land. Not the Harrington Riley—though there had been a Harrington Riley once, in the 1820s, who had been the family's worst member and whose existence the family preferred not to discuss. This Riley was a sharecropper who had arrived during the war with nothing but a mule and a conviction that the earth would feed him if he fed it first.
Thomas wanted him off the land. He needed the land working to pay the taxes. But Riley was working it, and working it well, and had no intention of leaving.
"It's my land," Thomas said.
"It's your paper," Riley said. "The dirt's mine. I've been feeding it since before you knew it existed."
ACT III
The third generation arrived in 1993, in the form of Catherine Harrington, who was forty-six and a developer from Richmond who had never visited the land and did not want to.
She had inherited it through a series of legal complications that she did not bother to understand. She understood the numbers: three hundred acres, zoned commercial, value approximately two million dollars if subdivided and sold to a chain of discount retailers who were expanding into rural Virginia.
She drove out with a surveyor and a lawyer and a woman from the marketing department who wanted to know if the land had "character."
"It's a field," Catherine said. "With trees around it."
"Trees are character," the marketing woman said.
Catherine did not care about trees. She cared about the numbers. But that afternoon, standing on the rise that William and Thomas had both stood on, she looked at the land and felt something she could not quantify—a sense of continuity, of three people standing on the same ground at different times, each one believing they were the first to see its value, each one believing they were the last to hold it.
A man named Owens lived on the land. Not a sharecropper—something newer. He was in his fifties, with a trailer and a garden and a dog, and he had been living there for twenty years, since before Catherine's family had decided to sell it, before the surveyor had put his orange flags in the ground, before the marketing woman had asked about character.
Owens was the great-grandson of Riley. He had never heard of William Harrington. He had heard of Thomas, though—not from family, but from the old men in town, who told stories about the soldier who had tried to evict his grandfather and then lost three brothers in a war that had nothing to do with the land but had taken everything anyway.
ACT IV
Catherine did not sell the land.
She stood in the surveyor's trailer on a Wednesday in October, looking at the maps that showed how the three hundred acres could be divided into forty-two lots, each one worth forty thousand dollars, each one promising a family a piece of the American dream and promising Catherine a payout that would erase her debts and free her from the partners who were waiting for her to deliver.
She thought of William, who had seen timber and tobacco and a future. She thought of Thomas, who had seen a deed and a war and three graves. She thought of Owens, who saw a garden and a dog and a piece of ground that had fed his family for four generations and which he had no intention of surrendering to anyone who spoke in numbers.
She thought of the rise, and the view, and the three hundred acres that had not changed while everyone else had.
She called the marketing woman. "Keep the land," she said.
"The land?"
"The land. All of it. We're not subdividing."
"What are we going to do with it?"
Catherine looked out the window at the sky, which was the same colour it had been in 1753 and 1863 and every year in between. "We're going to hold it," she said. "That's what my family does. We hold things. It's the only thing we've ever been good at."
The land did not change. Catherine held it. Owens farmed it. The trees grew and were cut and grew again. And on the rise above the Potomac, three centuries of Harringtons had looked at the same ground and seen something different each time, and each time been right, and each time been wrong, because the land was not theirs and never had been and would never be, and the holding was always temporary, and the holding was everything.
