The door was unlocked, which was the first thing that felt wrong about it. Her apartment door had always been locked - triple deadbolt, chain, the works - and the fact that Sebastian's door was unlocked when she arrived on a Thursday evening with a takeout container of Thai food and a question she had been carrying for four years suggested either extraordinary trust or extraordinary negligence, and she had never been sure which quality defined him more.

She let herself in. The apartment was dark, which was the second thing that felt wrong, because Sebastian had always been a man who liked his spaces well-lit, his surfaces visible, his boundaries clear. This apartment had the dim, wavering light of a room that has given up on being seen.

"Elara?"

He was in the kitchen. She hadn't heard him move. She hadn't heard anything move for the past forty-eight hours, which was the third thing that felt wrong, because Sebastian Blackwood had never been a man who could move quietly in his own apartment.

"I brought pad Thai," she said.

"I know. I ordered it. For both of us."

She set the container on the counter. The kitchen was clean - too clean. The counters were bare except for a single coffee mug, washed and inverted on the drying rack. Everything had a place and every place was empty, which is to say the apartment was functioning perfectly and living poorly.

"You look tired," she said.

"I've been sleeping."

"You don't look like someone who has been sleeping."

"I look like someone who has been not sleeping." He leaned against the doorframe. "You didn't have to come."

"I know. That's why I did."

Four years. Four years of this same conversation played at different volumes, in different cities, in different versions of the same story. She had left Boston with nothing but a camera and a suitcase and a promise to herself that she would not look back. She had gone to California, where the light was golden and the ocean was loud and nobody knew her name. She had learned to develop photographs in a darkroom that smelled of chemicals and loneliness. She had sent postcards that she never mailed. She had waited for a letter that never came. And now she was here, in his apartment, in the dark, holding a takeout container of pad Thai like it was a peace treaty.

"Why did you call my sister?" she asked.

"Because I couldn't call you."

"That's not an answer. That's a confession."

"It's both." He pushed off the doorframe and walked to the table. He pulled out a chair. It scraped against the floor with a sound that made her think of a train leaving a station, and she understood that this was what it felt like to leave and to stay at the same time.

"Four years, Elara. Four years and not one phone call. Not one letter. Not one damn thing."

"You didn't call either."

"I was waiting."

"For what?"

"For you to call me. For you to say stay. For you to realize that California is a beautiful city but it is not home."

She laughed, and it was not a nice laugh. It was the laugh of a woman who has been holding her breath for four years and has finally exhaled and discovered that the air tastes like vinegar and salt.

"Home," she repeated. "You think home is a place? You think home is an apartment with a locked door and a well-lit kitchen and a man who measures his coffee in spoons and stirs it three times?"

"I think home is a person."

She stopped. The Thai food sat between them on the counter like an offering at an altar she didn't recognize. The apartment was dark and quiet and full of everything they had never said.

"You think home is a person," she said again, more softly this time.

"Yes."

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."

"I know."

"But it's also the truest thing."

She picked up the container of pad Thai and walked to the table. She sat down. She opened the container. The smell of garlic and fish sauce and chili filled the kitchen, and for a moment the apartment smelled less like a museum and more like a home.

"Tell me," she said. "Tell me everything you didn't say in four years."

He sat down across from her. He picked up the chopsticks. He looked at her with the same expression he had worn at her graduation, at the station, at the door, at every moment when he had chosen silence over speech and regret over relief.

"I didn't call because I was afraid," he said. "I was afraid that if I heard your voice, I would beg you to come back, and I didn't want you to come back because I wanted. I wanted you to come back because you needed to. There's a difference."

"Is there?"

"Yes. One is love. The other is -" He stopped. "The other is need. And I didn't want to be what you came back for."

She put down her chopsticks. She reached across the table and took his hand. His fingers were cold. His palm was dry. He didn't pull away.

"You were always what I came back for," she said. "Even when I didn't know it. Even in the desert. Even in the darkroom. Even when I was developing photographs and the chemicals were eating my nose and I thought I was free and I was just - I was just running toward you in the wrong direction."

He closed his eyes. His thumb moved across her knuckles once, twice, three times.

"Stay," he said.

"I am."

"Are you?"

"Yes. This time I'm staying."

The apartment was still dark. The Thai food was getting cold. The door was still unlocked. But for the first time in four years, the apartment smelled like something other than absence.
