The Other Brother
I.
I was seven years old the first time I saw him. He was sitting in the drawing room of Pemberton House on Newbury Street, a boy maybe a year older than me, too big for the chair, wearing clothes that were clean but clearly not his. He was looking at the Christmas tree — not with wonder, which I had, but with something that looked more like recognition, as though he had seen this tree before in a dream and was surprised to find it real.
"Jimmy," my mother said, "this is Eddie. He's going to be part of our family now."
I looked at Eddie. He looked at me. He smiled, and his smile was not the eager, anxious smile of someone trying to be liked. It was the calm smile of someone who had already decided that being liked was not necessary.
"Hi," I said.
"Hi," he said. "Do you like books?"
"I like the ones with pictures."
"Me too. Pictures are the truth. Words are the lies we tell about the truth."
I did not fully understand what he meant, but I understood the tone — this was someone who spoke in a way that adults did not, in a way that made you feel, for the first time, that someone your age saw you clearly.
II.
Eddie was ten when I was seven. He was already a reader — not the casual reading of children who flip through storybooks before bed, but the fierce, hungry reading of someone who has discovered that books are the only things in the world that cannot be taken away from you.
He had been at the St. Jude's Orphanage for two years, he told me. Two years of cold rooms, thin soup, and nurses who spoke to the children in the flat, even tone that people use when they are talking to things they are not quite human. He had learned to read in the orphanage, from a discarded copy of Robinson Crusoe that a volunteer had left in the common room.
"Crusoe was alone on an island," I said. "That's sad."
"Not sad," Eddie said. "Free. On an island, you don't have to be anyone's nephew or anyone's charity case. You just are."
I did not know what "charity case" meant. I would learn.
Our parents — Father, Arthur Pemberton, a banker whose face I associated with formal photographs and cold handshakes, and Mother, Beatrice, a woman who hosted teas and judged her neighbors and believed that the world was divided into categories that could be managed with sufficient elegance — treated Eddie with what I now recognize as polite condescension.
To their guests, Eddie was "a dear boy," "so intelligent for his circumstances," "a credit to the family." To us, he was something else. He was the thing that sat at the end of the dinner table, one place further from the head than the boys. He was the guest who stayed forever. He was the living proof that Mother and Father, the most elegant people in our circle, had failed to produce an heir.
I did not understand this at seven. I understood, intuitively, that Eddie was mine — not in the way that toys are yours, but in the way that a secret is yours. He was something that belonged to our little world, a world of two boys who read books by candlelight in the library while Mother entertained guests upstairs.
III.
I remember the day he left. I was eleven. He was fourteen.
We were in the library. I had found him there, sitting in his usual chair, staring at the fire. He was holding something in his hand — a book, but he was not reading it. He was just holding it, as though its weight were enough.
"I'm leaving," he said, without looking at me.
"Where?"
"away."
"Will I see you again?"
He looked at me then, and his eyes were red. Not with tears — with something worse, the look of someone who is trying very hard not to cry and is losing the argument.
"Maybe," he said. "If we're both lucky."

"Keep it," he said.
"Take it. Buy something that makes you happy."
He held the money for a long time. Then he put it in his pocket. "I'll buy a book," he said.
He wrote something on a piece of paper — a note, I thought, but when I looked at it, it was just an address. A boarding house in South Boston. "If you ever want to find me," he said, "that's where I'll be."
I nodded. I did not trust myself to speak.
He hugged me. It was the first and last time he hugged me. He was a tall boy, and his arms were strong, and he smelled like old books and soap.
"Jimmy," he said, "you're going to be alright. Don't let them make you like them."
"Like who?"
"Like them."
He left. I stood in the doorway and watched him walk down the street, his bag in his hand, his head up, walking away from a house that had never been his and toward a future that was entirely his own.
I went back to the library. I took out the twenty dollars from my pocket — he had given them back, I realized — and I went to the bookstore on Tremont Street and bought a book. It was a collection of poetry — Whitman. I still have it.
IV.
The years after Eddie left were the years I understood most clearly what my family was. Father grew more distant, more focused on his work, more absent from the house. Mother grew more active in society, more vocal in her judgments, more determined to fill the space that Eddie had left with things that could be managed — charity balls, club meetings, the careful curation of appearances.
Charlie, my older brother, grew into the role that had always been intended for him. He was polite, confident, slightly bored — the young man who had been given everything and expected to do something with it and was not quite sure what "something" was. He went to Harvard. He came back with a degree in business and a manner that suggested he found everything mildly amusing.
I went to MIT. I studied engineering. I came back with a degree and a certainty that I did not entirely feel — the certainty that I was doing something useful, something that mattered, something that my mother would not have to explain to her friends.
The fire happened when I was thirty-two. Charlie was thirty-five. Eddie would have been thirty-nine, if I could have done the arithmetic correctly. I could not. I never could.
The fire destroyed the Pemberton estate — not the house on Newbury Street, which had been sold five years earlier, but the family's summer home on a lake in northern Maine. Father had bought it twenty years ago, a grand Victorian that he had never lived in, a monument to a lifestyle that no longer existed.
It burned on a July night. The cause was never determined. Lightning, maybe. An arcing wire. Arson, someone whispered. The insurance money was substantial. Charlie handled the claim.
I did not go to Maine. I was in Cambridge, working on a project that kept me at the office until late, and I did not go because I did not want to see Charlie handling the claim, or Mother weeping elegantly into a handkerchief, or the family lawyer talking about "the settlement" and "the distribution of assets."
I stayed in Cambridge. I worked late. I came home to an apartment that was too quiet and made dinner for one and read a book and went to bed and thought about Eddie, who would have been thirty-nine, and wondered what he was doing, and wondered if he had ever thought about us, and wondered if he had forgotten.
V.
I saw him ten years later. I was forty-two. He would have been forty-nine.
I was walking down Newbury Street on a Saturday afternoon, the kind of afternoon where the city fills with people who have nothing to do and everyone to see, and I turned a corner and saw a bookstore I did not recognize — small, unremarkable, with a window full of used paperbacks and a sign that said simply "Marsh Books" in letters that had been painted by someone who was not a professional.
And there he was. Eddie. Older — grey at the temples, lines around his eyes, his body no longer the long, uncertain body of a teenage boy but the solid, quiet body of a man who has learned how to occupy space. He was helping a customer — an old woman with a shopping bag — find a book. He took the book from the shelf, handed it to her, smiled, and she smiled back, and the smile was warm and real and uncalculated.
I stood across the street and watched him. I wanted to go in. I wanted to walk through the door, approach him, say: "Eddie. It's me. Jimmy."
But I did not. I stood across the street and watched him work — this man who had been my brother in everything but blood, who had taught me to read by candlelight, who had given me back my twenty dollars and told me to buy a book, who had walked away from a house that had broken him and built a life out of the pieces.
He looked happy. Not the happy of a man who has achieved something — the happy of a man who has found something small and kept it. A bookstore. A street. A routine. An old woman who needed help finding a book.
I stood there for a long time. The afternoon light changed. The people on Newbury Street flowed around me like water around a stone. And then, slowly, I turned and walked away.
I did not look back.
I went home to my apartment in Beacon Hill, which was smaller than the house I had grown up in but larger than the apartment I had lived in before, because I had done well as an engineer and my father, late in life, had decided to provide for the son who had not asked for anything.
I made dinner for one. I read a book. I went to bed.
In the morning, I took the Whitman poetry book from my shelf and opened it to a page near the middle. On the inside cover, in a handwriting I had not seen in twenty-eight years, someone had written: "For Jimmy — who taught me that books are the truth. — Eddie."
I had forgotten he had written that. Or perhaps he had written it in a book that I had lost long ago, and this was a different book, and the writing was mine, from a different time, when I had still believed that things could be simple.
I do not know which. I have never asked.
